Quite literally, the ties between organized crime and the church are pretty strong. The Mafia, both in the US and in Italy, were known for giving money to the church, and there also are allegations that have been backed up that the Vatican bank made some significant money by money laundering mob money and in helping transport it. When the Mob bigwigs died, they often got huge funerals from the church, presided over by Bishops and Cardinals (when Joe Colombo died in the 1970's, the then Cardinal of NYC presided over his funeral).
I gotta hand it to this Pope, he has a big pair of balls on him, at this point, we might make book on whether the Mafia will kill him first, or the hard line Bishops and such JPII and Benedict promoted who hate that Francis has a lot more on his mind then high living and turning Catholicism into being anti gay and anti abortion, period.
