Well, almost invisible at least to police laser guns.  There's a new product (not sure how new) on the market called "Veil" that degrades the effective range of a laser gun by 50% on average.  You apply it to the lense covers over your headlights and front license plate (if you're required to have one).  These are the aiming points for the laser.

Used in conjunction with a laser detector, it gives you precious time to slow down before the laser can get a reading of your speed and saves you a ticket!  The stuff has been tested by several unbiased groups and it works (it's also legal in all 50 states).

I'd rather drive within the law and save the money.

I generally do...certainly in urban areas, cities, and towns.  But when driving 500 miles in a day, you tend to want to make good time.  In my experience, 90% of the people on the Interstates drive about 10 to 15 mph over the limit.  This being the case, I drive with the flow of traffic (safety in numbers).  But there's always the risk of being the unlucky one and this will help give an edge of protection.

I would question that claim of legality.  In most states, it's illegal to have anything "obscuring" the license plate.  If a person were somehow found to have this stealth coating on their plate, I'll bet they would get written up for whatever charges the officer could concoct at the time.

I researched everything I could think of regarding this product.  I learned that it is legal because it doesn't impair visible light, only infrared, which is what laser guns use.  I also was surprised to learn that clear plastic license plate covers are actually illegal in many states because they can reflect headlights at night making it difficult to get the number if you were a police officer tailing a suspect.

I'm wondering if this came from some advertising copy, because I find it difficult to believe that the cops have to aim a laser at either headlights or the license plate of a moving car to get a reading.

The laser needs a reflective surface and a certain amount of it to get a reading.  Those aiming points are ideal, especially the license plate since it's painted with a reflective paint.  Testing lasers revealed that cars outfitted with a black car bra are also difficult to lase and get a reading...also the darker the car, the harder it is to get the speed as well.

Most of the places I am aware of, pretty much allow up to 10 miles over the speed limit unless the officer in question is in a bad mood.  I have sometimes considered that the limits are imposed based on the fact that 10 mph over the posted speed limit is safe for that particular roadway.  The powers that be are well aware that most, especially when driving on highways, are going to move along at a faster clip.  I do.  Hence, at least in Az, you can safely drive 75 in a 65, 65 in a 55...etc.  I exclude residential neighborhoods marked at 25MPH and school zones limited to 15MPH, of course.
I haven't had a speeding ticket or any moving violation in over 20 years, and yes, I sat all day in traffic school to satisfy the penalty for that last one.

I would have to dig up the state statutes to be sure, but I don't ever recall seeing anything differentiating between portions of the light spectrum when referring to obstructing the license plate.  Do you know of any such language in any state's vehicle code that addresses specific wavelengths of the spectrum?

If after all is said and done there is a sufficient loophole to drive this product through, you can be sure it'll be closed fairly quickly.  God forbid we interrupt that revenue stream.

Bupkiss!

The cone on a laser speed detector spreads as wide as three feet. It is aimed, but simply covering up headlights and license plates would not help you.

Not to mention that trap detectors (whether laser or radar detectors) are illegal in most states.

Well all I can say is currently it's legal according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.  Here's a blurb from...

www.insurance.com

Stealth Coatings
Designed to reduce LIDAR laser speed detectors from tagging your car, Stealth Coating is a laser absorbent paint that can be applied to your headlights and license plates to reduce near infrared laser light reflections. When applied to treated areas, the paint should act as a shield, blacking out any areas that could be potentially be picked up by a police laser gun. To date the stealth coating is legal in all 50 states.

What happens in the future will certainly be some form of change.  Right now, the laser manufacturers are working on a moving laser so police can spot check traffic while on the road.  That will raise the bar once again.

Regarding the wording of laws banning modification of license plates...I think this is aimed at the original purpose a license plate was intended for...not to be a reflector but to mark each car with a unique, identifiable registration number.  Altering a license plate to obscure the numbers is clearly against the law.  Steath coatings do not hinder the license plate's original purpose and that's most likely why it's legal.

I've used a coating on my eyes called crying. Combined with trembling hands at 10 & 2, it's 66% effective.

This is fun...I've done the research my friend.  A laser is as thin as a pencil when it leaves the gun but at 1000 feet, the cone covers the entire car and also weakens with distance, which is why they have to aim it at a reflective surface.

Radar and laser detectors are currently illegal in 2 states (Virginia and Washington, DC).

Radar and laser jammers are illegal in 9 states (Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.)

Ahem!  I didn't realize Washington, D.C. was a state.
That said, it figures radar and laser detectors would be illegal there.  We sure woudn't want all those Congress peeps getting pulled over or receiving a citaton in the mail!
What I am curious about is this...
If radar and laser detectors are illegal in Washingtom, D.C., why would jammers be illegal in Washington, D.C. ?  I mean, if they can't use the detectors in the first place... Why would anyone need to jam something that isn't legal to be used?
***Wanders off musing what they might be using radar and laser detectors for that is not traffic related, while making sure that this same illegal radar and laser detection cannot be jammed***

The radar detectors are used by the police, and it is legal for them to use it.  You cannot own a radar jammer to interfere with police operated radar detectors.

I hate to rain on the parade ... but the color of the paint affects the reflectivity?  I can't imagine that for the wavelength we are talking about [904 nanometers - or 904 billions of an inch] the color of the car would effectively (maybe minutely, but not effectively) change the reflectivity of the laser.

More flat forward-facing surface areas create a larger signal reflection back to the laser gun, which makes you easier to detect.  However, with pulse technology they don't have to leave the radar/laser on - they can pull a trigger for a short burst to measure your speed almost instantaneously.  And if you are close enough, no layer of goo will save your lead boots from the hoosegow.

Of course the people selling the unit will tell you it works, but snake oil cures cancer, too.

The radar detectors are used by the police, and it is legal for them to use it.  You cannot own a radar jammer to interfere with police operated radar detectors.

Aha!  So what we are discussing here is that the law enforement can use radar and laser detection, but the man on the street cannot own or use a detector that detects the detectors?
anthro said his research showed radar and laser detectors to be illegal in both Virginia and Washington, D.C.  His additonal research showed that several states plus Washington, D.C. had laws rendering radar and laser jamming equipment illegal.
Note:  This is a serious question.  I am confused!  And it is not nice to confuse a Domina!  *Smile*
