ORIGINAL: Sanity All Republicans are criminals, yada yada yada A bit more from the article linked to above on how Europe is financing al-Qaeda: Armed with a few hunting rifles and old AK-47s, the kidnappers succeeded in sweeping up dozens of tourists over several consecutive weeks, mostly from Germany, but also from Austria, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. Though they planned the first few ambushes, they appear to have grabbed others by chance, like a pair of hapless 26-year-olds from Innsbruck, Austria, who were spotted because of the campfire they had lit to cook spaghetti. Beyond the initial grab, the kidnappers did not seem to have a plan. The only food they had was the canned goods the tourists had brought with them. The only fuel was what was in each gas tank. They abandoned the cars one by one as they ran out of fuel, forcing their hostages to continue on foot... What an interesting spin on paying ransoms for hostages. If they didn't get paid a ransom they'll just blow up a bank (killing many innocent people in the process) and raid it instead. "The U.S. Government will make no concessions to terrorists holding official or private U.S. citizens hostage. It will not pay ransom, release prisoners, change its policies, or agree to other acts that might encourage additional terrorism" Source: http://dosfan.lib.uic.edu/ERC/arms/cterror_briefing/951017cterror.html "Whether kidnapped British aid worker Linda Norgrove was killed by her captors in Afghanistan or by friendly fire — U.S. investigators said Tuesday that they're not sure if it was a Taliban weapon, a U.S. one or a combination of both — during a calamitous Navy Seals raid to rescue her last Friday, Oct. 8, one thing seems clear: neither British nor U.S. officials considered negotiating a ransom for her release. And in that decision, those two countries appear to be rare indeed" Source: http://content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2024420,00.html [Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010] So... rather than pay a ransom, they usually botch a rescue mission that gets them and the hostage(s) killed; or, as in the latest US soldier debacle, the US released a load of AQ prisoners so they can kill and maim (or take more hostages) in the future. Yeah. A numbskull approach that does nobody any good.
