... and you're expecting me to click on links for "alternative music" on a site full of sadists? I may have been born, yesterday but I was up all night, studying!

I see. You have trust issues.

Click the links...

CLICK THEM!

I assure you that they are not typical, run of the mill music.

If you don't know about Fela and the whole afrobeat thing, it's worth a wiki and some time on Youtube.

Wow. A turn table, huh? Talk about old school! It isn't one of those crank-up jobs is it?

It's a 1980 Gerard strobe turn table (Cost me $500 in 1981).

Back in the day, a musician that wanted to slow down songs to learn how to play them had to have a strobe. Of course, today, things are different.

Back in those days, we pieced together our stereo equipment because while ... say ... Gerard was one of the best turn tables, their electronics were crap so, one got a Pioneer (Or, I preferred JVC) amplifier with a Panasonic receiver and a Pioneer tape deck (dual, of course).

Add some JVC or JBL speakers and you had a monster system.

I was semi-joking but I really don't listen to much "alternative" music. I'm not just limited to Elvis but I haven't recognized one name in this thread, yet.

Screen captures still RULE! Ya feel me?

I'm not sure what a Gerard strobe turn table would be, but when my brother and I were learning guitar our folks had an old turntable that had the 16 RPM setting on it. We'd put an LP on (33 1/3 RPM) but play it at the 16 RPM setting. That was close enough to half speed that the music was still pretty much in the same key...just an octave lower and half the speed. It was a great help learning new songs and new licks.

Had to revisit this thread to post some more music:

This band sounds like they got a ton of influence from Pink Floyd, but if you listen close enough, they have their own unique style.

Airbag - The Greatest Show on Earth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJtENoZ7XLo

This band is another interesting mix of different influences:

FORMATIV - In This Mirror: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RE2N5VD8IPE

Edited to add:

Afro Celt Soundsystem - Éireann: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LOlWaxdFVM

Lacuna Coil, especially "Our Truth". Spectacular video on YouTube. Anything from Live off of Throwing Copper still comes close to paradise for me. Andrea Boccielli, new wave, B.B. King are all beautiful. I like some rap but no opera or Kabuki or Celine Dion...that's punishment lol

Sorry for not providing links....I am still figuring out how to navigate the forum pages!

My taste in music is a bit across the board. I tend to lean towards old country (30's-80's), classic rock (60's-80's), and some very, very early rap.

I have come across some newer music in the past though, that is exceptionally good to my thinking.

Some of them would include:

Deine Lakaien

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV4DcSSeSTY
Rodrigo y Gabriela
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PT9hvyDvKHA
This is from the movie "Repo! The Genetic Opera"

My musical tastes have always been outside one sigma of the popular bell curve. Sometimes it is a band, or a composer, or even and instrument, that catches my attention and I fill more of the ipod from the source. Let me share a few of my favorites over the decades that may not have found a way to your playlist.

Old School....
Steeleye Span once even had a song in latin in the top 40. Their signature was taking folk songs and giving a rock treatment. One of my favorites by them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23TS-LKMRWE

Yep, 70s... a time for experimentation in music once you got away from bubble gum, then disco, that was on the radio. For example
Pentangle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFuxq_J1VuA
Tartan Amoebas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bJ5ljSXolk

This was a time that also saw the introduction of synthesized music. The Moog was in it's infancy and Korg and Roland were just a dream. But, what do you get when you have a PhD in music that also has a PhD in electrical engineering? You get a composer that builds his own instrument. I love this one by Isaio Tomita but, don't play it for stoned friends in a darkened room.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD-vYOCsgvY

Ok, I waxed nostalgic for a bit there.
More recently I've noticed a composer that I really like that mainly does incidental music for movies and television. I'll bet you have listened to Bear McReary compositions and didn't even know it. This is what you get when you put his name into youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bear+mccreary

Recognize anything you have heard before?

Now speaking of incidental music composers... Brent Lewis & Peter Woods, besides writing for video, have some of their own albums... one I particularly like:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze0yqxZp9n8

There... a glimpse of sound on the fringe side....

Oh yes, gotta plug the relatives:

I actually don't love metal/rock. I like hardcore, it's different from metal and rock.

And I especially dislike nu-metal.

Can deal with bands like Slayer and old Metallica, and maybe some Napalm Death.

You need to listen to the emo portion for softer gentler stuffs.

But frankly, all the stuffs I posted are not even heavy by my standards, they are all just easy listening stuffs.

Not a fan of Metallica tbh, Old Metallica when Mustaine wrote their stuff, yea. I also like "guitar gods" like Vai, Satriani and Malmsteen.

What I liked about hardcore is there is more focus on meaningful lyrics than instrumental brilliance. So you have basic chords, basic distortion, no fancy guitar works, solo or any spectacular drummings.

Metal has alot of focus on technical guitar skills and drumming and stuffs, the musical part of it, which is nice to watch in a live concert, but usually, I like music with lyrics that are meaningful to me and the vocals has to be raw and heart-wrenching.

Nothing since the late 70's has ever come close to the original rock bands.
And people have the audacity to mention the likes of megadeath/metallica in the same breath as Floyd/purple etc!!

Not a patch. Sorry.

Ha, and you can probably tell, I can't appreciate a single song from Pink Floyd or Deep Purple, assuming you are referring to those two bands.
I hated what's on the radio until I discovered punk/hardcore/emo, I just love it from first listen and they will live in my heart and in my ears for life.
The first punk band I ever listened to was Screeching Weasel, they stole my heart. Then first hardcore band was Earth Crisis, I was in love with the style of music, but I never featured them as they are kinda a few hit wonders only. First emo band might have been Get Up Kids.
But ya know, music is like bdsm, there is something for everyone :)

If you do a search for them, I believe they have two albums up on bandcamp for free or minimal money.
