ORIGINAL: thishereboi http://news.yahoo.com/black-colleges-face-hard-choices-25m-koch-gift-181232115.html I have to admit, I was a bit surprised to read this after all the horrible things I have heard about them but it seems they have a bit of good in them after all. Now this part didn't surprise me... "Whether genuine philanthropy, political jujitsu or some of both, the gift sparked a debate that peaked when Lee Saunders, president of the powerful American Federation for State, County and Municipal Employees union, sent the UNCF a blistering letter ending the union's financial support." I guess he is more concerned with scoring points off the other side than seeing the kids get the money they need to go to school. The Koch's "gifts" to universities come with strings attached so people are skeptical about this one. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2014/03/28/the-koch-brothers-influence-on-college-campus-is-spreading/ Your link itself stated that most of "this money did not color classroom curricula — nor did money from any other donor, liberal or conservative." After "this isn't always clear ," there were a few things pointed out.- FLA State U got money and the strings were that a Koch appointed committee select the professors and evaluate them yearly. While that is certainly questionable, it isn't a guarantee of curricular control.
- Troy University got money for a center on political economy
quote:
The center describes itself as being “built on the assumption that liberty is valuable in its own right and plays a crucial role in economic development” and “committed to advancing our understanding about the role free markets and capitalist institutions play in promoting prosperity.” That isn't exactly an unknown, nor is it necessarily biased. - Ohio State got money funds a senior lecture position in the economics department. While they are directing the money go to a senior lecture position, there is no statement that they decide who the lecturer is.
- NYU's donation went towards funding a 2 year "legal studies research fellowship." Is there something wrong with that?
Further: quote:
No such level of detail is supplied by the Koch foundations in their federal tax filings, with grants typically listed as going toward “general support” or “educational programs.” Does the IRS have a problem with that? If so, then the IRS has a way to deal with it, don't they? quote:
The Charles Koch Foundation, which among the various Koch-connected private foundations spent the most on higher education, did tell the IRS in a 2012 filing that it primarily supports “research and education programs that analyze the impact of free societies” and focuses on “a select number of programs where it believes it is best positioned to support positive social change.” THE HORRORS!!!! These were the only cases noted, along with the implication that there are more. If those "more" cases are as evil as the ones they touted, you got nothing, really.
