ORIGINAL: LittleGirlHeart DS we will try them first. Shar i have used his lap top for the entire day litterally , every day and yup it gets hot, but it has never crashed from getting hot. Hhe uses this bit torrent or what ever the hell you call it free downloading progrqm to download movies and games, and i believe and he does too it put some ting nasty on the laptop. Try rolling your system back to an earlier time FIRST. Torrenting pirated software is one of the best ways to compromise a system unless you are incredibly tech savvy. Geek Squad is a fucking rip off, they will fix your problem but it will cost you plenty. I know people that used to work for them and frankly, it is a waste of time and money. Most things can be done yourself. I didn't outright call them a scam and crooks, but you can figure that out for yourself. Hardware problems can happen overnight but most of the time they take place gradually and it may take months to notice a problem. OK, let's rule out the hardware for now. The reason you can rule out hardware is most hardware problems, MOST of them, are normally easy to replicate. You do this, this and this and the system crashes, every time. Or, you turn on the computer and it fails to boot into windows and just beeps. That sort of thing is pretty easy to figure out. There are a few programs to monitor internal temperature and overall system load etc that can be downloaded. I am not going to suggest any, but there are a few free ones that will at least tell you if your CPU is getting too hot. As long as your system has the electronics to monitor temperatures, that software will work. OK, first website to introduce you to is Majorgeeks.com. I have used this site for pretty much everything related to security software to stubborn virus removal and even some pretty cool utility programs and really nice other software options. They are honest about what the software is as far as if it is ad based or shareware or freeware and everything is safe for downloading. Their forums are also damn handy if you have a bastard of a virus or malware problem. Go get the following programs: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/spybot_search_destroy_tools.html Spybot is a great utility, is simple and easy to run and will get rid of a metric shit ton of potential spyware. It is very useful and is quite adept at detections. It is also very light on system resources. Install it, update it, and then run the detection scan in Safe Mode. http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/spywareblaster.html This program is not detection software but it actually can make sure that a good deal of spyware etc. never gets onto your computer through your browser. Very light on system resources, you will likely forget it is even there. Just remember to keep it updated. A good many people do not realize that there are good, reliable online antivirus scanners that are free to use. A ton of people ask me why, if I already have antivirus software, do I need to scan online. The answer is simple, there is no one antivirus solution that will catch everything. You should only ever install one antivirus program on your machine because if you have multiple ones, they usually don't play well together. So, one installed program and then use online scans which won't normally conflict with what you have installed. Do either the fast scans or the full scans, for the first time I suggest the full scan, but this can take quite some time, so best to set it up overnight while you sleep and with any kind of luck it will be done by the next morning depending on the speed of your machine. http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.html http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ I am sure there are others out there but I use these two and have never had a problem with either of them. The last bit of software I will point you to is a great one and will definitely solve your problem if it is malware or virus related. HijackThis takes a ton of work and it is normally not for the typical user but is just fine with guidance from people who know what they are doing. It will also require you to get involved in the MajorGeek forums for assistance. You can trust those people, they are patient but you have to follow their instructions carefully. There are several steps to take before you use this program because most problems can be solved easily before having to get into this kind of work and detail. I will link you to the Majorgeeks forums and they have a post there that will explain what to be certain to do first. Understand this is a "when all else has failed" step and one of the last things to try if the rest hasn't worked. http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/hijackthis.html Link to forum post: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 OK. Last thing to do if everything fails is to reinstall Windows. This wipes everything off the system and makes the PC (software not hardware) like factory new so back up your data. Avoid GeekSquad at all costs. I would look around for a local computer repair shop that has a good reputation and sooner see you take it there because those shops live and die on their reputation, GeekSquad is a success simply because BestBuy makes it so. Plus, if you get a good rapport with your local computer guy, he can help you a lot when it comes to choosing your next computer. Best of luck!
