quote:
ORIGINAL: cloudboy These guys are hopeless. The Heretic especially. An black 18 year old teenager deserves to die from six gunshots after stealing cigars and jaywalking. The whole community reports a feeling of police harassment, and all H can say is "I think it was a minimum of two, on the day he got killed - a shopkeeper and a cop. The second of those worked out badly for him. " TRANSLATION: He doesn't give a shit. Sadly, this is likely the case for a lot of people across the country. I think a lot of people develop an idyllic image of what American cities and towns "should be," and so their reaction to things outside of their own insular standard becomes confused and convoluted. And part of me understands where they might be coming from. I've lived in small towns where people didn't have to lock their doors, and I've also lived in cities with high crime areas. When I travel through various cities, people might advise me to "stay away from this area" or "that area," indicating the areas where it might be unsafe to go. So, it's a reality that people have to live with, but just as with this thread and elsewhere whenever the topic is urban crime and social decay, fewer people seem interested in discussing the reasons and the sources of the problem. It's as if the elephant in the room took a shit, and yet, all people want to talk about is the shit while still ignoring the elephant.
