My roommate does much of the cleaning as he's unemployed while his girl/the other roomie and I work. So everything is to be kept neat to his standards or else, it seems.
Usually not a problem, he's far from a slob, except he puts the glasses away upright in the cabinet. I've tried to explain, and she's tried to explain that they should be stored upside down, but he doesn't listen. Then people come to the apartment and try to tell us the glasses are put away wrong. WE KNOW, DAMMIT. And whenever I'm putting away dishes I store the glasses properly, and he just has to correct me. [8|]

This is something I've never understood.....why do glasses get stored upside down anyway?

Kaliko -> RE: Domestic Pet Peeves... (9/27/2014 5:53:15 PM)

I don't have any complaints. I just want to know why my spoons keep disappearing. I'm down to one. Again.

You know....that's all I can think of too. But if that's the main reason...then why not store plates and bowls upside down too? My cups and glasses don't stay in my cabinets long enough to collect dust.

<---- stores glasses, plates, et al. Upside down. I store all cookware in the dishwasher, because I'm a better dishwasher than that thing will ever be.

PandoraFoxxx -> RE: Domestic Pet Peeves... (9/27/2014 8:30:14 PM)

I think the glasses stored up or down is kinda like the whole over vs under toilet paper roll thing.

My significant other has a tendency to take his shoes off wherever and leave them there... I'm clumsy and I trip over them constantly!

Leaving the ironing board out every morning when he irons his shirt is also another one, but at least I don't have to iron it, so I can't complain much. I just put the board away and call it good.

Oo-oo, that's bad. [8D]

With me, it was forks. I was wondering, WTH? How could we be down to just a few forks and half as many knives as what we should have?
Then one day I witnessed what was happening.
My son was clearing his plate and absent-mindedly dumped his utensils along with bones and napkin into the trash.
Mystery solved.

Me too!!!! My dishwasher is such a crappy dishwasher that it works so much better as a drying rack. But I live in an apartment, so you know my landlord isn't going to spend the money to replace it with something that actually does what it's supposed to do. I think it's been more than 2 years since I ran my dishwasher....and then ended up having to wash most of the dishes again anyway.

I think that's just his subtle way of telling you that he really wishes you WOULD iron his shirts for him. He's probably hoping that you'll get sick of putting the board down every day. This could be a test of wills....who is going to wear down first? LOL I would just leave it up and see how long it takes him to get frustrated with walking around it.

I think that's why a lot of men (I said "a lot"...not "all" or even "most") are so inept at cleaning. They figure that if they screw it up enough and irritate their female partner with their ineptitude, the woman will just push them aside, take over and do it herself. Which is what the guy was hoping to happen from the beginning anyway. I'm lucky that I have a very high tolerance for dirt and clutter. Even if I don't like it and I keep my own mess under control, I still tolerate it in others very well. I've converted a few guys to being much neater than they were when they first met me. Eventually they get frustrated with not having someone pick up after them all the time and not being able to find things.

ExiledTyrant -> RE: Domestic Pet Peeves... (9/28/2014 5:09:19 AM)

Ha! For me it's the fact it takes an hour to do what I can do in five minutes, and it wastes sooooo much water, and the idea of dirty dishes sitting in there... Waiting... Lurking and looming, just creeps me out. I always prepare dishwater when I begin to prep a meal so I can wash as I go anyway. Now the habit has really paid off. The people across the street raised pet cockroaches and when they moved they didn't take them with them. I get scouts looking from time to time, but my kitchen looks like Ethiopia when it comes to food for pests.

ivone57 -> RE: Domestic Pet Peeves... (9/28/2014 10:55:10 AM)

I dislike putting away dry clothes, I don't mind washing them nor drying them and folding them but putting away... ackkk same as with the dishwasher, I don't mind loading it but I hate putting it away.. ah well what cha gonna do

As mentioned, to keep out dust and critters.

Not that you should have critters in your cabinets.

Also, in general, the mouth of the cup is larger than the base.

So they are less likely to fall over/out of your cabinet.

Please note I said in general.

Exidor -> RE: Domestic Pet Peeves... (9/29/2014 5:58:32 AM)

> cabinet doors

I was surprised to see so many other people had issues with that as well.

In my case, my ex would rummage through all the cabinets, and leave *one* partway open... a different one every time. No amount of remonstration was able to deal with this, so one afternoon I took them all down and stacked them in the garage.

When I reinstalled them a year later, she didn't have any problem remembering to close them...

The dust and critters aren't a big deal....my cups and glasses don't sit in my cabinet for more than a couple of days.

Although I hadn't thought about the base being larger than the mouth....that makes sense....although for most of mine it's not that big of a different to have any effect.
