quote:
I generally try to avoid getting personal, but I can't help chuckling over your being infinitely more dogmatic than anyone I've ever heard in church. Fuck dogmatism! You have completely misjudged me. You're not the first and I doubt you will be the last. I hate absolutism. If you never understand anything else about me, understand this: I FUCKING HATE ABSOLUTISM. Do not confuse absolutism with certainty. I can be certain about something while still being open to doubt about it should contradicting evidence come along. Absolutism is the unwavering belief that one's ideology is NEVER wrong. It has been the cause of far too much misery throughout human history and continues even as I write this. Dogmatism is what compels some individuals to behead others for believing in the wrong god. Debating the merits of religion on a message board is not dogmatism. Please don't compare me with those evil mother fucking shitheads again. Ultimately I do not care about labels. I don't care if somebody wants to call themselves a Christian or not depending upon this or that criteria. Labels are an unfortunate necessity and the human race spends far too much time arguing over them. You can find endless arguments all over the internet of people screaming over the "true" meaning of conservative or liberal or Christian or Muslim, etc, etc, etc. We do this of course because the power to label something is the power to define "reality." I have my own labels to define my own reality as I see it. If you or anyone else don't like my labels, I don't really care, they are only tools. But by focusing on the labels you are continually missing the main point which is this: people who believe they have a monopoly on the truth are dangerous. The true believers (the absolutists) of any ideology, whether it be secular or religious, are dangerous. Here in America the religious true believers (absolutists) are dangerous to human rights (opposing gay marriage and reproductive rights) and science education. In the middle east they are dangerous to life and limb. You don't hold rank with such people. Fair enough. I never said you did. I get that you're insulted at the notion you're not a true believer but given that I don't rank you among such - it is actually a compliment. If you want to call yourself and others true believers, go right ahead. I'll know what you mean (believe it or not, I am capable of entertaining more than one definition for a word or a phrase at a time) and ultimately I don't really care what you or anyone else calls themselves. It is the concepts behind the labels, not the labels themselves, that matter.
