Here's some of my favorites (Please check out some of these fun bands! I'm linking the ones not commonly known or that can't be readily bought in stores):

Stellar Vector- "Agoraphobia" (the lyrics strike me as being very good for BDSM in some ways): http://www.stellarvector.com
Enigma- "The Principles of Lust" or "The Gravity of Love"
Massive Attack- "Antistar", "Special Cases", "Inertia Creeps"...just about everything...
Portishead- "Mysterons", "Elysium"...and again, just about everything.
Puscifer featuring Maynard James Keenan- "Rev. 22:20" (It's on the soundtrack to the movie Underworld)
Thosquanta- "Inch (Tease Me mix by Heliosphere)" (Verrry sexy)
http://www.thosquanta.com to check out the band- click on "media" and go to their Soundclick.com site to download the track for free if you would like.
Daybehavior- "Bleed" or "Devil in Me": You can download these tracks free on Amazon.com.
Envy is Blind- "Sea of Flames": for the hard fast stuff.
http://www.envyisblind.com will also give you some free downloads, that track included. Click on "Audio" and go to their free Mp3 page.
Melissa Ferrick- "Drive". For the indie rock chick in me. Again, it's a sexy track.
Tori Amos- "ieee", "Sweet the Sting" and "Raspberry Swirl". People must think I'm crazy, haha.
Nine Inch Nails- Of course, "Closer" is fun. There are some other gems, too- I'm fond of The Fragile album.
Snake River Conspiracy- "Lovesong". An interesting cover of The Cure, but very fun.
Depeche Mode- "A Pain That I'm Used To".
Orbital- "Atom Bomb".
Delerium- "Euphoria (Firefly)". Beautiful.
Rob Dougan- "Furious Angels" and "Clubbed to Death (Kurayamino Mix)"- both found on soundtracks for The Matrix movies, but his personal album is good, too...
Carl Orff- His opera Carmina Burana, particularly "O Fortuna".
Eurythmics- "Sweet Dreams". I need to say no more.

I admit my music-nerd status...this was less than I thought it would be. Let's just say I have a seven disk set of "Sex Mixes".

Occaisionally, Sade or "Wine Light" by Grover Washington one of the best Jazz albums ever.
Silence is good too.

Usually none, unless the radio is still on at the time. I have found though, Enigma makes good scene music. I just rarely tend to use music.

I love to get freaked out.  A top that can get my adrenaline pumping is great.  Music you'd hear from a horror movie works great.  Especially if there are sound effects, too- ESPECIALLY if you're not expecting someone to suddenly scream from the corner of the room.  Also, try your sub with a blindfold and headphones so your sub can't see or hear you, but gets something from the music.

Classical is always a great avanue, rich rich tones.
Rammstein always good.

Re: Appreciating silence.
Yeah, I have to say when I first saw this question, the first thing I thought was - Well, it can be nice, I suppose, as long as it is truly "background" music. Otherwise, for me, it would tend to be too much of a distraction, and I could have a hard time giving as much as I would like, and also getting as much enjoyment as I might,  because I think if it's too loud it could ruin my concentration and consequent ability to "let go".

Having said that, I still think sometimes, that truly emotive classical music in the background (like Beethoven, Not Bach) would maybe be okay, even enjoyable. Whatever it might be, I think would be better if it was instrumental only.

I play all kinds of stuff...anything from Elvis to Nine Inch Nails.
Some music is upbeat for the beginning and it then the music gets dark and intense as the session really gets going and then I have some winding down music the last thing playing is a relaxing thunderstorm or the ocean waves.

I have different lists for different people too...the more extreme submissives I have the harder rock or alternative playing. The ones who are mellow I tend to play the softer songs.

I also play BDSM videos during sessions...no sound of course...sometimes it great to keep them busy for a few minutes...I can sit relax drink some coffee spray them with cold water...

I would like to find some deep dark industrial beats for scening, similar to Danzig's Sadistikal track. Cause it has that hard feel to it, but it doesn't jar the scene with too many lyrics. The last thing I would want is to find me concentrating on the song, and not my sub or bottom.
