I guess I feel like we've all strayed so far from that- why should this be different?
We're at the top of the food chain- what is he protecting me from at this point?

Hmmm, well my theory:

In social terms, yes, a long, long way. As for the deepest and most primitive parts of the brain - the fight or flight stuff (amygdala, I think?) - our brains are still in 'breed, hunt and gather, and be alert for Panther attack' mode. When you consider why we love bathing in hot water - not exactly an experience the average cave dweller would have been familiar with, save a hot spring - you remember our love of heat, be it from another body, or the fire you just knocked up with a stick and some kindling, was the way we survived. Heat = survival = we enjoy heat. It shaped our evolution, and explains why we love the hot stuff to this day. Long since the threat of actually freezing to death - for the most part - has left our everyday existence, by means of our societal constructs. I think the desire for a strong mate to protect/strong genes to offspring (f>m), and baby-making-capability indicators (m>f) are still very much in play. As much as our 'higher brain' might dislike the notion that a part of the brain that evolution left behind is influencing our behavior to such an extent, and all without us even being conscious of it. But if it ain't broke, evolution ain't gonna fix it.

I also recall reading that this part of the brain is where a lot of olfactory/sense of smell processing is based. Which would explain why that particular sense is somewhat unusual. The whole "what's that smell" fuzzy feeling, versus the much more precise and instant sight and sound recognition process of the 'higher brain'.

(Anyone with additional biology knowledge, please do chime in and/or give me a science smack down :p)

I believe you're quite right, about the olfactory side of things, as well as "fight or flight", lol. The law of attraction happens very subliminally, as evolved as we may be, sometimes it's a matter of"chemistry", varying forms of stimulus...mental, visual, conceptual and tactile. And the greatest of all of those is olfactory. Pheromones can affect the brain as well as the nervous system quite easily. Attraction is still very primal at its core.
My psychology teacher at a time I didn't believe it said human beings "need sex". I am sure this theory can be proven in different microcosms. I metaphorically imagine not satiating such a "need" like that of any other. Time is the enemy and can be comparative to a jack in the box, or a panther looking at prey, eyes dilated. Very here and now. Perhaps such an analogy will help you along. Rules for attraction would make sense if it derived from the ego or superego but it all comes from the id, the most basic instinctual reaction. Several factors may play a part of initial attraction beyond that but feelings of fear, excitement and such cause a pheromone release once the stimulus is there. Romantic or not.
The more instinctive, the less rational and the greater the desire. Intimate encounters are very here and now, even for those who live in foresight or hindsight.
Larger men are perceived to be the stronger men because it is depicted as such in nature, but that is not the case with our species, one of the greatest strengths a man can have is mental fortitude. That too can bring about a desired result against larger counterparts. But fortitude and primal attraction is still the underlying theme.

There are man-eating, or just plain vicious, predators out there, so humans are not always perched on top spot.
No tigers, mountain lions or bears that have acquired a taste for human blood within your vicinity, unless you like to swim with the sharks, but I know a couple of people who believe in Chupacabras hiding out in the fruit orchards. [8D]
(One of them swears my male cat is half-Chupacabra and calls him a demon cat.)

Seriously though, the world is not safe by any stretch of the imagination. And the prey of choice for sexual predators is still...females.
This doesn't mean that a short, scrappy, brave man can't protect others better than a cowardly, tall one can.
My husband was strong and muscular but wasn't as tall as I would have liked. An inch or two off the top can be compensated for elsewhere. [;)] It would be nice, for a change, to not have to be slightly stooped over (while wearing heels) when putting my arms around a man's neck while dancing. *sigh* I can dream.

ETA: My last sub was tall at 6'1" <bites knuckle> but we never went out dancing for some strange reason....

Thanks GoddessManko, some very interesting points. A psychology smack down, if you will.

I actually never went in for psychology as a discipline. The competing theories felt a little too much like a room full of blindfolded men dancing around in the dark. But something I'll certainly do some further reading on. As your post demonstrates , it informs the topic.

No, the theories all have substance, it's a matter of perspective. Many people have taken the Jung personality quiz and found it can explain their personalities to a surprising degree. Also when it comes to neurology, that goes beyond psychology, then we're speaking physical science of how the brain works vs intangible factors.

FelineRanger -> RE: Short men make better... (10/11/2014 4:04:44 AM)

At 5'6", I am a short man and I honestly don't care one way or another. It doesn't stop me from approaching a woman taller than I am. Think about that from a strictly prurient perspective. If she's 5'8" or taller and puts on significant heels, where does my face wind up? And I'm going to complain? If you go to the fight or flight scenario, being shorter gives me a lower center of gravity and makes me actually more difficult to defeat, which gives me an advantage. But the simple fact is that Homo Sapien has gone so far from its roots that height is actually no more than another characteristic in what a potential mate finds attractive right along with skin color, hair color, and a whole host of other physical traits.

MistressKale -> RE: Short men make better... (10/11/2014 6:08:17 AM)

My current submissive is very short (as am I) and he's awesome.

Don't know if that necessary correlates at all. Just what is going on with me right now.

Hmmmm., I wasn't suggesting they don't have substance, just they can't all be right to the same degree. An opinion that you might disagree with, but my opinion nonetheless. I've heard of the 'Jung' approach, I will investigate that some more, thank you.

I always feel that psychology goes beyond neurology, rather than vice versa, but that's semantics. Something about the challege of falsification in the former, the concreteness and objectivity of neurology, versus the interpretative, speculative, subjective psychology. Just one opinion :), and thank you again for your thoughts.

Confidence always wins the lady, not the height.

EmpressElsa -> RE: Short men make better... (10/13/2014 6:50:31 AM)

I have found no correlation between the quality of a sub and his physical stature. Sometimes shorter subs are easier, logistically, to get into certain positions though.

Short femdoms, though - that's an entirely different story. Very bad tempered, from what I've seen. It's always short femdoms who start threads on 'do-me male subs', from what I've seen.

Don't make fun of my threads! [:@]

In all seriousness, I see that kind of behavior in damn near every femdom who posts less than 5 times here before flouncing. No height restriction there.

I think a lot of what people consider attractive in the opposite sex stems from the primal side of things. Women are very biologically driven, and I personally think that wanting a "taller/larger" partner has to do with wanting someone who can protect his mate and family from saber tooth cats. Silly, yes, but probably partially true. We are animals, whether we want to throw up the "we're civilized n shit" smoke screen or not. A duck is a duck.

I have always preferred men taller than I, which isn't that difficult since I am about 5'2 on a good day.

I think better subs make better subs - has nothing to do with height.

That and tall men breed bigger babies. :)

DesFIP -> RE: Short men make better... (10/18/2014 6:42:00 PM)

From a pragmatic point of view, someone has to be tall enough to get things down from the top shelf. Or change light bulbs in a chandelier without hauling out a ladder. At 5'3" it sure as hell isn't going to be me.

sloguy02246 -> RE: Short men make better... (10/18/2014 7:47:08 PM)

FR

Each time I run across the topic of how tall the man should be in a hetero relationship, it reminds me of a first date I had (through a vanilla dating site). She was about the same age as myself and we agreed to meet at a Panera Bread for lunch and a chat. We ended up sitting there for 3 1/2 hours, covering every topic under the sun. When we left, I felt the first meeting was quite a success and would surely lead to a second date.

Next morning I received an email from her, which I am pasting below.
Note: This is the entire, unedited, original message.
I have not added, omitted, or altered any part of it (except to remove our respective names):

Hi Xxxxx,

You know one of the many things about these web sites is that one cannot get the feel of the chemistry of another person until you meet them in person. I was shocked that you were not taller than I am. I really have a thing about the guy being at least 3" taller than I am. I am going to be remeasured at my yearly physical this month. Maybe I am 5' 9", the height you said you are. But, I can definitely tell you, you were shorter than me. This is again a real problem for me. I have the need for my significant other to be tall enough for me to look up at them.

I wish you all the luck and happiness in your future.

Xxxx

flutterby55 -> RE: Short men make better... (10/18/2014 8:11:37 PM)

She was very short-sighted (pardon the pun). Some of the most handsome men I have ever met have been what might be considered short.

SapiosexualSlut -> RE: Short men make better... (10/18/2014 10:27:15 PM)

Well, maybe it's just because I like to buck the trends but I quite like men my height or shorter. I get to be the big spoon, we're normally around the same strength which makes play wrestling more fun, I'm rarely pressured into wearing heels and making out for more than 10 minutes is a lot more comfortable on my neck, haha. I mean everything else has got to be there too, but height isn't even in my top 10.
