So after watching the Nymphomaniac series and loving them, I decided to venture into the world of movies a bit.
Typically I love thai horrors, including;
Shutter (thai version), The Screen at Kamchanod, Body #19, Alone and The House.
But after seeing paranormal activity I became more open to American horrors and horrors from west of the greenwich meridian.
Some that have come onto my list are "Sinister", "Final Girl", "Perfect Sisters", "Cabin Fever; Patient Zero", and a new asian film called "Rigor Mortis".

A couple of non horror ones I am looking forward to star two JL's, Jennifer Lawrence and Juliette Lewis. "Serena" with Jlaw and "Kellie and Cal" with Juliette Lewis look equally epic with extremely strong female leads. Juliette Lewis shines in the latter.

If you are really into horror/suspense movies, one you might look at is Haunted.

Others that I have found noteworthy are:
Bless the Children; more of a suspense than horror
Thirteen Ghosts
and who can go wrong with the original Exorcist

Paranormal Activity was an abysmal film. What made that film hugely popular was the advertizing campaign, the content of the movie was shit. Just my opinion.

As far as horror goes, American horror films can't even come close to foreign horror.

Try these movies, but be warned... they are pretty brutal:

Frontiers

High Tension

Inside

Audition

The Last Circus - This film is a visual masterpiece, stunning in every way.

Those are fairly hardcore horror films and not for everyone.

Other horror films:

Pontypool - A very intriguing twist on a zombie film. Not Academy Award winning stuff to be sure, but there is something about that movie that was just a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

Saw - The first three movies, although I am a fan of the entire series. The only "slasher" films where the killer wants you to live.

The Thing - Both the black and white film and the John Carpenter remake. The black and white film was not terribly scary by today's standards, but the dialog is what truly sets this film apart. John Carpenter's remake was closer to the short story that The Thing was based on.

Midnight Meat Train - Clive Barker is one fucked up dude. This movie was killed by a new CEO of Lionsgate who wanted to get away from making horror films. It had a very limited release as a result, but does not lack for production and visual atmosphere.

Hellraiser - The first one. Clive Barker again. I was a fan of the third one because it gave more screen time to Pinhead who, in my opinion is one of the all time great horror movie villains.

Antiviral - Not too much of a horror movie, but a very interesting concept. I liked it because of its antiseptic feel... pun intended.

Phantasm - A tad campy, but if the Tall Man and the ball don't freak you out, then I am not sure what would.

Bug - Ashley Judd is superb in this quaint little horror film that is more of a psychological horror experiment than anything. Definitely worth watching.

The Descent - Pretty women go cave exploring... it goes wrong... very, very wrong. Quite a bit of fun.

The Fly (1986) - This movie was well done. Jeff Goldblum was amazing to watch. Takes some time to get moving, but when it does, it snowballs... fast.

Halloween (2007) - Rob Zombie makes the original film look small. His take on it makes Michael Myers so much more evil and twisted than the original.

The Mist - This one will come with a warning, the ending is shocking and disturbing, I warn you now... if you cannot handle things like that, don't watch it. It disturbed me a lot, and that is tough to do. One of the finest Stephen King adaptations they made in my opinion.

Phantoms (1998) - Dean Koontz wrote this book and the movie is quite good.

Silent Hill (2006) - This is a very creepy film. It was one of the only video game adaptations to the silver screen that worked well. If you liked the games, you will adore this movie. The town of Silent Hill was based on a real place called Centralia, Pennsylvania that has had an underground coal mine fire burning since 1962.

Thanks Gauge! You rock. I started watching horror relatively young and of course had to have seen original Hellraiser (no one can top Pinhead, I think he begot my love of leather and chains *purrs*). The Fly... What a classic, I loved that rendition to the old school black and white one, his transformation was exceedingly disturbing so definitely not for the feint hearted. The Thing was so great with Kurt Russell, I think they made a contemporary version of it but I have yet to see it, ought to check it out.
Speaking of old school and movies with Kurt Russell "Big Trouble In Little China" is an amazing mix of comedy and sci fi, and "The Golden Child" with Eddie Murphy is timeless. Far less corny than twilight were the "Lost Boys", who didn't wanna join that group of vamps? I also liked the Bram's Stoker's rendition with Winona Ryder personally as well as "Interview with the Vampire" on the vampiric note. The least boring role by far Kirsten Dunst has ever played. Halloween... Oh man, taking me back with this list. Jamie Lee Curtis was a total bombshell, speaking of which, "True Lies" with her and the governator should be in everyone's movie collection, her range in this movie is incredible and nice mix of action and comedy from them both.
Saw, wow...he wanted them to live, really? The first one was brutal but after the unveiling I knew the sequels couldn't live up to that level of"who, why, where" so skipped those.
But thank you, thank you, thank you for a new list of Horror flicks I can venture into. I like brutal, otherwise I'm critiquing the film and picking apart things that make no sense (think the parody Scary Movie), if it's well done, I'll love it. You might like my short list of thai horrors. The cool thing about all of them is on top of being REALLY good and well done visually, they all have plot twists you wouldn't expect, so not all about the gore, actually incredibly clever. Those are pretty brutal I have to say for ghost stories. Check out the preview for Rigor Mortis and you'll get an idea of how serious the asians are about their horror, just awesome.
Thanks again! Finding good horror is daunting unless you got an inside man who's a fan so glad we're like minds. Starting from the top of the list and working my way down.

Livide
American Mary
May
Absentia
Excision
Stoker
Oculus
Midnight Meat Train
The Loved Ones
The Babadook (not yet released)

The Sentinel. 1970s, and absolutely fantastic.

I am a horror fanatic/reviewer/blogger and have seen hundreds upon hundreds of horror films. If you're easily squicked out by blood - skip Excision, though I personally feel it is one of the best on the list and should not be missed by anyone interested in the Genre. Not to mention Traci Lords' performance is positively stellar. Livide's subtitles are god-awful (it reads like someone used google translate) but it is worth the watch for atmosphere and a nice little tale.

If you're looking for a more complete list including older films, let me know.

I didn't see Nympho as a horror.

And I hated that film for so many reasons. I think Von Trier is a total douche.
I can't wait until everyone realizes that he is spoon feeding the audience like they are DUMB and how heavily and obviously metaphor laden those films are. And how much he must have serious issues with women.

I felt Vol 1 was great. Vol 2 just got STUPID. The ending is SO STUPID.

I suppose to each their own, but I'll only watch those flicks once, cause I really didn't need to see Shia's balls and ass that much ever.

I find it absolutely hilarious that when females are at the forefront as villains everyone cries misogyny. Untrue.

That said, Nympho was pretty ridiculous. :P

That's not what I think, I think he is a pompous ass for thinking he knows the first thing about female sexuality.
I mean I related to parts of it...but and admittedly, anti Christ, I felt was pretty female hating also.

He could stand to make a movie in which a females sex life doesn't ruin everything it touches, let's be real...

Thanks Pandora! You are my "go to girl" for all things horror based. I am a huge, huge, huge horror movie fanatic , mostly the occultish stuff, but that said I mentioned quite a few which didn't go under the context of horror, sorry for the mix up there shifty. I was honestly extremely unimpressed with Volume I of Nymphomaniac and the entire thing felt pretty contrived. The parts about her method of doing "shakedowns", also unrealistic. That much unprotected sex to begin with and survive that long is a little unrealistic, no one wore a rubber, wth.
BUT, that said, I honestly really enjoyed the part about the male Dom, it really was my favorite part of the movie and set my heart pumping. When he said "no limits" and I saw the marks on his "princess", I was very scared for the main character. His character made most most of the series for me if that makes sense at all. It also tackles some pretty bizarre and disturbing concepts of love, lust and unhealthy attachments. Series II got more realistically heavy than Series I. And agreed, the director is known for being errr...angry and loud and difficult to work with. I wouldn't be able to tolerate him for probably more than two minutes.

The most recent Thing was actually the events which lead up to the beginning of the John Carpenter movie. It was good, and the ending, though entirely predictable sent a chill down my spine.

Both movies are guilty pleasures of mine.

Never saw any of them. Twilight is an insult to the majestic vampire lore. Bela Lugosi was the best vampire ever... but I grew up on black and white horror films. Speaking of vampire movies, if you have never seen Nosferatu (1929) sit and watch it, it is a cinematic classic.

quote:

Halloween... Oh man, taking me back with this list. Jamie Lee Curtis was a total bombshell, speaking of which, "True Lies" with her and the governator should be in everyone's movie collection, her range in this movie is incredible and nice mix of action and comedy from them both.

Jamie Lee Curtis makes me tingly in my naughty bits.

quote:

Saw, wow...he wanted them to live, really? The first one was brutal but after the unveiling I knew the sequels couldn't live up to that level of"who, why, where" so skipped those.

Jigsaw wanted his subjects to live. Each movie had a twist ending, the first three were the best of the bunch. The other four were good, still inventive, and really didn't lack for asking and answering questions. I was glad they stopped when they did. Tobin Bell is so much fun to watch.

But thank you, thank you, thank you for a new list of Horror flicks I can venture into. I like brutal, otherwise I'm critiquing the film and picking apart things that make no sense (think the parody Scary Movie), if it's well done, I'll love it.

I am a harsh critic, though I have never blogged about it or written professionally, I weigh a lot of different factors when I critique something. I look at the acting, story, cinematography, cohesiveness, and whether or not it entertained me. I hate not being able to watch a movie for the sake of watching it... I am always thinking and picking it apart, and sadly, I am very adept at guessing plots.

Not a problem. I am sure I have more to give you, but my list was off the top of my head.

quote:

Starting from the top of the list and working my way down.

Buy popcorn.

A few non-horror favorites:

Wargames - The one in the 1980's. Asked a very pertinent question about technology and National defense.

Fail Safe (1964) - The cast is studded with very famous actors, a young and thin Dom DeLuise even makes an appearance. Asks nearly the same question about National defense as Wargames, but makes it gut wrenching. Do Not Miss This One!

Volcano - Tommy Lee Jones... disaster, Los Angeles and lava... what is not to love?

Cinema Paradiso (1988) - Won Best Foreign Film that year. An Italian movie about a small town in Italy where the only entertainment was the movie theater. A young boy befriends the projectionist of the theater and it is the story of their friendship in life. Simply a must see film for anyone with the love of cinema.

Waking Ned Devine - A light comedy about a small Irish town who has a resident that wins the National lottery and then dies. The town decides to make sure the dead man collects his winnings. A whole bunch of fun... and beautiful scenery.

The Quiet Man - John Wayne as a burned out boxer who wants to disappear in a town in Ireland and just live out his life. He falls in love with Maureen O'Hara (another that makes me tingle pleasantly) and of course, his life isn't the same.

Zorba The Greek - Anthony Quinn brings Nikos Kazantzakis' character to life. Brilliant story, brilliant film.

The Last Temptation of Christ - Another Nikos Kazantzakis story, directed by Martin Scorsese. Willem Dafoe as Christ, Harvey Keitel as Judas, David Bowie as Pontius Pilate, and music composed by Peter Gabriel. What is not to love? Tells the story of Christ and the struggle between flesh and spirit. Forget what the fucking church had to say about it, it was phenomenal.

I have many more, but my eyes are tired and it is time for bed. I will have to pull out my collection of DVD's (1500 of them) and find some more titles for you. This should keep you occupied for quite some time. Let me know how you like all of them.

I guess, for me, "MUST watch" would equate to movies that are in "heavy rotation" in my DVD cabinets. I have almost never been a fan of "Horror movies" (which it seems is where this thread is headed) so, allow me to be the fly in the ointment (again).

In no particular order:

"To Kill A Mockingbird "
"Inherit The Wind "
Any "Star Trek " movie (accentuating II, IV, and VI and excluding "Nemesis ")
"The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly ", "A Fistful of Dollars ", and "For a Few Dollars More
"Hang 'Em High "
"First Blood "
"Rocky " (Just the first one)
"The Godfather " (ALL three)
"Platoon "
"Full Metal Jacket "
"JFK "
"Malcolm X "
"Do The Right Thing "
"42 "

Screen captures (and pissing on shadows) still RULE! Ya feel me?

I offered a few must see non-horror. I want to add more... my insomnia is just clouding the process of my thinking. You are never a fly in the ointment.

quote:

"To Kill A Mockingbird "

One of my favorites. I read the book every other year. Brilliant film and it was the screen debut of Robert Duvall (Boo Radley).

quote:

"Inherit The Wind "

Terrific film.

quote:

Any "Star Trek " movie (accentuating II, IV, and VI and excluding "Nemesis ")

Agreed. The First movie was also good... a little on the slow side, but I remember seeing it in the theater and when each character came on screen everyone was cheering.

quote:

"The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly ", "A Fistful of Dollars ", and "For a Few Dollars More

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly is my favorite western of all time. I actually own the soundtrack album. The "Spaghetti Westerns" were truly classics.

quote:

"Hang 'Em High "

Yep.

quote:

"First Blood "

The first Rambo movie. I loved it, quite fun. I think Stallone wrapped up that series well with the final Rambo movie which was more brutal than the other films.

quote:

"Rocky " (Just the first one)

Hard to pick out what made the movie so great because everything just worked together. I own the soundtrack. This movie was very significant for its time because the USA needed a hero, and Rocky was it.

quote:

"The Godfather " (ALL three)

The last one was OK, not great. I loved the book too... but this really took gangster films and propelled them way past what they had ever been. Star studded cast. Interesting trivia about the film, when the film was made the actors were given the option to get a paycheck or to get a small paycheck and get a percentage of the movie. Only Brando took the option for the percentage... he knew how good the film was going to be. The movie Goodfellas has got to be on this list.

quote:

"Platoon "
"Full Metal Jacket "

Two of my favorite war films. There is another that tops my list called Silent Night (2002)... Hamburger Hill was another one.

quote:

"JFK "

I normally do not like Kevin Costner but this movie was very good. It should not be taken totally factually, but otherwise it made its point well.

quote:

"Malcolm X "
"Do The Right Thing "
"42 "

Never saw them. I'll have to give them a look.

Nice list.

I'm taking out all my quote boxes to save space and leaving yours ...

I also read this book, frequently. I recently found out that my lady has never read the book or seen the movie. We're going to fix that, soon!

Terrific film.

There was another film, starring Spencer Tracy whose title I can't remember (hence my not owning it). He plays a hearing-impaired lawyer that is defending a murderess and he loses the case. Maybe it's because I was so young, when I saw it. I might think it sucks, now but I would love to see that movie, again (Yes, I've searched IMDB but without a title, it is difficult).

quote:

I also saw it in the theatre, the first time and it was cool because Star Wars had caused the new interest in Star Trek. However, when I watch it, at home, I fast forward through all the exterior shots of the ship.

Yep.

I'm a huge fan of a good portion of Eastwood's work (he's also a passable Jazz musician) but these films really stand out for me. The last, about vigilante justice and revenge (it all depends upon point of view, doesn't it?) is a real barn-burner for me.

This movie told an important story that at the time (1982-83) needed to be told and it was pretty well done.

I've never been able to put my finger on it, either but, there are times when it's hard to argue with an Oscar.

The last one (to my mind) was great if taken in context with the first two. Also, I've never been a fan of the flashbacks in II. I never felt like the made any sense. In the late 70s, NBC aired a "Mini Series" of I & II but, Coppola had re-edited the flashbacks of II into the beginning of I.

I don't believe it is available, anymore but I was able to video tape it on AMC, a bunch of years back. It's entitled: "Godfather: A Novel for Television ". If you can find it, I highly recommend watching that and then III on a nasty Winter weekend.

Re: Brando's pay: The story I heard (and believe because it's on the DVD collection, coming right out of Coppola's mouth) is that the studio didn't want Brando anywhere near their lot and not only was that the only way they would pay him but Coppola was forced (by the studio) to take out insurance against Brando's participation in the film (Brando possibly walking out, whatever).

"Goodfellas " was a good film and I own the DVD but, for some reason, the last half hour seems like someone threw out an anchor. When I hear the helicopter, I'm finished, watching the movie.

Two of my favorite war films. There is another that tops my list called Silent Night (2002)... Hamburger Hill was another one.

I've never seen "Silent Night " but I'll give it a look. To me, "Hamburger Hill " seemed to want to "follow" in "Platoon's " footsteps but they fell horribly short. However, Courtney B. Vance was a scene stealer.

I normally do not like Kevin Costner but this movie was very good. It should not be taken totally factually, but otherwise it made its point well.

How could I have forgotten one of my favorite actors to "hate"?! I'm not a fan of most movies he directed/produced but he made a movie about one of my personal heroes that I watch, frequently; "Wyatt Earp ". Also, an honorable mention to "Field Of Dreams " (being a big baseball fan).

Never saw them. I'll have to give them a look.

"Malcolm X " and "Do The Right Thing " are by one of my least favorite human beings on the planet but he does make the occasional good movie; Spike Lee.

Denzel Washington gives an outstanding performance in the title role of the first one. The latter is just a really good look at racism in America (which got better, after that film and has gotten even worse, in recent years)

Again, being a big baseball fan, I did something I almost never do, anymore; I went to the theatre when the film first opened. Jackie Robinson had a huge cross to bear. The fact that most of my family were Brooklyn Dodger fans and I heard all of the stories, growing up didn't hurt, either.

I bought the DVD as soon as it was available.

I need to add a few that I forgot:

"The Green Mile " - There are times when I still can't get through this one without shedding a little "man tear".

"The Shawshank Redemption " - Just a terrific movie, all around.

"The Man From Earth " - I recommend this one, highly for anyone that is feeling philosophical.

When I need to laugh: Any Mel Brooks film (I own them all) and "Monty Python & The Holy Grail " and "Monty Python's The Life of Brian "

I'll ask my Dad, he might know.

If you had read the book, Mario Puzo had the flashbacks in the book to the origins of Vito Corleone and how he started in the life. It also gave a terrifying look into the life of Luca Brasi and why he was so feared as an enforcer. I had seen the movie before I ever read the book, and when I did read the book, the famous scene with the horse still shocked me. Puzo was a master story teller.

Brando's pay:

The details were a little fuzzy for me... fucking insomnia... but yes, it was something like that. All I knew was that he got a percentage, and they were very afraid he might walk out. I saw Brando on Johnny Carson one night and he told some funny stories from the filming of the movie. One was of the guy who played Luca Brasi, who was petrified of the camera, so his stammering in the beginning of the film was not acting, but quite real. Coppola suggested to Brando to make some jokes to the guy so he would loosen up a bit. So Brando got one of the stage hands to write Fuck You on Brando's tongue. They began to shoot the scene and Brando, in the middle of it stuck out his tongue, and Brasi just bust out laughing along with everyone else. Everyone got serious again and began the scene again and Brando did it a second time with the same result. Coppola suggested everyone take a break and come back. After the break, they began shooting the scene for real this time, and while Brando was delivering his lines, Brasi stuck out his tongue and on it was written, "No, Fuck You."

I enjoyed the hell out of that. I also read the book.

I'll give it a look.

Always reliable. Young Frankenstein is my favorite. I own all of the Python movies and the entire series as well. Ever watch the TV series with Cleese called Faulty Towers? Hysterical stuff.

I own that entire (Brits have short TV seasons) collection, as well.

I need to send you a c-mail, Gauge. No big deal but I'm anal-retentive and suffer from CDO.

A few oddballs:

Black Orpheus. The Orphic myth is retold using an all-black cast in Rio de Janeiro during Carnivao.

Being John Malkovich. Weird, offbeat comedy. The ending falls flat, but the rest of the film makes up for it.

Rat Race. A redo of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. People try to race through preposterous silly gags to get a fortune.

A Fish Called Wanda. Jamie Lee Curtis tries to manipulate various men for the diamonds after a heist. Caricatures of Americans and British.

Fierce Creatures. Same cast as A Fish Called Wanda, different plot altogether. A NZ based media mogul buys a British conglomerate that includes a zoo.

The Peter Sellers-based Pink Panther movies.

So many wonderful movies. I admit to liking almost any movie John Wayne played in but my favorites that I would recommend to anyone are
The Quiet Man
Three Godfathers
Big Jake

If you like Mel Gibson, then the Road Warrior movies are a must.
Another good twisted, kind of WTF movie is Twelve Monkeys with Bruce Willis and Brad Pit. Totally fucked up movie.

If you are into military movies, then some good ones are
The Boys in Company C
We were Soldiers
The Dirty Dozen
Blackhawk Down was not bad. I was a bit disappointed in the fact that they changed alot of the 'true' facts of that exchange all in the name of National Security.

If you like comedies, some noteworthy ones are
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
The first Scary Movie (the rest all fell short and were just plain idiotic)

There was a movie out about 5 years ago or so, I can't remember the name of it though. It was about a group that get's kidnapped by this totally psychotic sadist out in the middle of nowhere. Freaked me out bad lol.

If you go in for the classic horror movies:
Nosferatu
Bella Lugosi's Dracula
Both the original The Thing and the remake with Kurt Russel
The original Friday the 13th
The first Nightmare on Elm Street
the Hellraiser series
The House on Haunted Hill
The Hills have eyes
The original Texas Chainsaw Masacre
