How are you weathering the storm?

I'm sitting up here on the Escarpment, missing out of the lake effect snow machine as we often (but not always!) do, and feeling mildly (but only mildly) guilty about it.

I hope all is well with you and yours.

If you can, give us a shout out to let us know you are okay. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to know you're all right.

For those of you wondering what I am talking about.

ETA: This has been cross posted on KinkyToo. Kinda. I'm a bit of a neophyte over there.

I recall parts of western New York being completely buried in the late 70's to the point where aerial photos showed a frozen white landscape dotted with just the roofs and chimneys of houses poking through.

I've also been wondering how he's doing.

When the stepson was at U Buffalo, we'd call up asking him how much snow they had gotten. It never ceased to amaze me that five miles away people had three feet, and he got just an inch.

None taken. I'm actually to the north of Buffalo where we don't get quite as many monster snow storms thanks to the local geography. The snow belts, as they are called, are driven by the Great Lakes. Warm, moist air from the lake rises where cold air sweeping in from the north and the west picks it up and then drops all that moisture - now turned to snow, on top of the adjacent areas. But I live in between the lakes. I have Lake Ontario to the north and Lake Erie to the southwest. Directly west of me in not a lake but the Niagara River and then Canada's Niagara Peninsula. That little strip of land is why we don't get the really big hits as often as those just a twenty minute drive north or south of us.

That would be the Blizzard of '77. One of the times when those of us in "the strip" did NOT get spared. I was twelve then and missed thirteen days of school, five of which we had to make up when the powers that be tacked an extra week onto the end of the school year (which we of course regarded as a gross injustice).

I spent the days riding around with my dad in our 4-wheel drive blazer helping stranded motorists get unstuck and the nights watching "Roots" on television with the family.

It's almost kind of surreal hearing about these things while living in the Sun Belt. I lived in upstate NY during the 70s, so I'm not exactly a stranger to snow and cold. I remember the Blizzard of '77. But I've been in the Southwest for so long now, I've practically forgotten what it was like. We do get some snow on the mountains around here, but it's not really the same thing - and nowhere near the subzero temperatures they get in the Northern Midwest and Northeastern states.

I've sometimes thought about moving back east again, as I still kind of miss the change in seasons that they get back there. At least it would break up the monotony of having year-round sunny weather. But I also remember that it's not exactly like "walking in a winter wonderland." Having to shovel snow and drive to work in a blizzard on icy roads when the temperature is 20 below zero when it's still dark outside...I think about that and decide, "Nah, I'll just stay here in AZ."

I hope you all fare well, those of you in the Snow Belt. I send you all warm wishes from the Sun Belt.

Howdy. Haven't been able to get online til now. I'm fine, more bored than anything else. Haven't seen a plow in thirty hours now? Can't seem to upload pics off my camera. They're not too interesting anyway, just a bunch of snow, really. I'll be pretty much offline for the next little while. Lucky I was able to log on now.

Thanks for your concern, all. All I need is for someone to airdrop me ten cases of beer, two cartons of reds, a couple cases of beans, batteries, and a bag of chips. I gotta clear LZ 500 meters east of me.

Wow... I do not understand how anyone can live in those cold states. That amount of snow is nuts! Here in CA we are suffering a drought. When I see snowfall like that I wonder why water cannot be shipped from one state to another. Then someone told me that not all snow contains a high water content. Umm.. what? I thought snow was frozen water vapor?
That makes living in those snowy states even more non-nonsensical to me.

Glad to see you're okay. Since those of us who call Bills' Country home are experienced with these things, I wasn't too worried. I figured you were probably bust digging out . . . or barricading the door.

Maybe it's in how the water crystallizes, and the fluffier snow means less water when melted?
I dunno. Not well versed in snowy things myself.
But I'm sure you guys over there need all the water you can get.

Not really. We usually get a few good sized snow storms every year although this one is earlier than the first one usually is. We're good for one major wallop (of which the current situation definitely counts) every few years or so.

Although I don't want to diminish the seriousness of the situation (people have died), weather like this can make some great memories what with all the community spirit that pops up during these times. Those are some great memories, helping my dad rescue stranded motorists and helping them get home. In later storms there were times when nearly the whole extended family was huddled together, making s'mores in the fireplace and playing board games.

Snow is water and air. Like rain I'm sure it is NOT immune to being polluted to one degree or another, but the snow around my stomping grounds presents no health problems beyond being cold and slippery (and confining if you get too much of it at once). There are a bunch of idiots on the youtube who think they uncovered a government conspiracy because snow doesn't react to a Bic lighter they way they think it should.

Winter is a harsh season, no doubt about it. Despite the challenges it throws at us, it can not be denied that winter possesses it's own unique beauties, its' own special charm . . . best viewed from behind a window with a cup of hot chocolate in your hand.
