Heard on the radio early (Rochester, NY) that the Buffalo Bills are paying $10 an hour and free tickets to Sunday's game to anyone who helps shovel out the stadium

Eek. I have to go back to that area for the holidays. Hopefully it calms down by next month.

I just spent six hours on a return trip to NYC from Binghampton, New York, because of road conditions further up north in Buffalo, New York. I was in a Greyhound bus station watching reporters trying to think up inquisitive ways to stumble Govenor, Andrew Cuomo, Jr., as to how the state was dealing with the ground transportation and related safety thereto. I spent a total of 10 hours in an immobilized sitting position (with the potential of more blood clotting in my legs) due to this snow storm in the upper regions of the state.

I also remember the 1977 snow blizzard that impacted even in New York City to grind this city to a sudden halt as to business and the threat to personal lives. As kids, we trivialized the event by playing tackle football on concrete because of the astronomical snow accumulation for that event. As kids without real responsibility, we saw the event less traumatic than what actually transpired. I still have the visual of watching my father from our apartment window venture into work that day -as he did every day. His work attendance was impeccable. His affection towards us was not so forthcoming. Ironically, I understand his struggle, and I don't understand Cuomo's edict that everyone should stay inside. The passage of time has represented that we will exacerbate the safety feasibility by ignoring such warnings. Although there was no snow where I traveled, I couldn't help but being mad at people's defiance to the safety warnings; yet, I understood.

Ten inches of snow is the equivalent of one inch of water. If the power goes out and we need to melt snow on the woodstove to make tea, it takes a hell of a long time to get a kettle full.

As Marc said before, snow is air and water. It's why it makes such a good insulator (yes, I've camped in weather like this). Best way is to pack it in as hard as possible before heating.

I went through '77 as a kid, and it was a blast for me back then. As I said before, boredom was the biggest issue for me personally. Still waiting for that airdrop, but it's probably not coming. Now, we're all getting ready for the flooding that usually happens after one of these things.

Thanks again, everybody.

Marc, I read your wiki link, and all I can say is.....wow! I am Canadian, so I understand snow. I grew up on the last street on the northend of Regina. One row of houses was all that seperated us from the vast open prairies. In summer time, it was great. You could see the storms blowing in, the dog racing around tye front yard, then hightailing it back to the steps when the thunder hit. Unfortunately, seasons change and so did the precipitation. Most years in elementary school we would shut down at least once. Parents would have to come and get you. You weren't allowed to leave the building unless you were with an adult. ahhhhh........snow........

You could also see your dog running away for three days, right?

Sorry, couldn't resist the reference....

Tired of waiting for his air drop, it appears that MasterCaneman has decided to take matters into his own hand.

ETA: Okay, seriously. Temps have climbed and now flood warnings are being issued. My continued well wishes for those caught in this mess.

Okay, like I said. It helps to have a sense of humor about the whole thing.
