This boils down to personal preference.

For me, the attempt at good grammar is important. After all, you wouldn't show up at a first date looking like a slob.

Nothing to do with preference. I recognise that there are better educated people than me just as there are those who are not so well educated.
Communication with others the best way you are able to is far more important than using the correct grammar at all times.

Fast Reply, firstly WELCOME to the forum side of things! I hope you enjoy your stay and looking forward to your input of all things lifestyle. Nice to have you join us. I will say, usually my grammar and spelling are impeccable but I have dyslexia and sometimes my thoughts get so distracted (thinking of when my new business card is coming in and I'll hear from my largest supplier as we speak, lol) that I might mean to type "there" but type "their" and it's only when I pay attention enough I think "Fack! How did that happen?!". So it really depends, but I see how someone mixing up Dominant and Dominate can be somewhat off-putting. I try to proofread and will correct if the error is something far too elementary. Sometimes my thoughts are extremely clear and very concise, other times they can get a bit jumbled due to "over-thinking".

I should clarify. My grammar isn't perfect. I am not expecting that from anyone. I just want to see an effort. A period here, a capitalized letter there.

It's like when someone takes a picture of themselves and everything is a mess behind them. It just seems like they didn't care.

Edited to add: Thanks for the welcome!

I think it's critical to follow basic standards in written communication. It aids...wait for it... communication.

That said, I am no grammar nazi. In my writing, especially, I tend to ignore the perfect grammar options for the "feel" I want to give, especially in my prose or dialog.

Yes, it's important. Not because I'm always perfect with my grammar (because I'm definitely not) but because I can argue for days about the correct use of a word or punctuation or something along those lines. If someone didn't even make an attempt at proper grammar at the get go, then that's a sign that he would tire of me and my playful obsessiveness about it pretty quickly. We just wouldn't be on the same page. Thankfully, I have a more-than-worthy sparring partner. I've even lost a few rounds. ;)

I agree fully.

It's about the "package" for me. And there are specific things that you can do to make that package look better online....

It depends on the situation and to what degree. When I'm at work and I get an email from someone who makes twice the money I do, and it says "I hope their not going to take to long"...I CRINGE!!! It irritates the hell out of me and I want to reach through the computer and smack them.

When I'm just chatting or texting with someone, I'm more flexible because most of the time when I'm doing those things, it's more of an annoyance to need to take a longer time to send the messages. To me, those things are for "quickie info". I try my best to prevent "auto correct" and I correct my errors if I catch them....but sometimes it's not worth the hassle of the tiny buttons. However, even though I'm a lot more flexible with text messages, I'm with swifty in that I HATE textspeak.....and when someone my age or older uses it to chat with me, it's a total turn-off.

The other thing is profiles. Some people just do not put any effort into them and when they are in textspeak or have a lot of errors, I just go right past them. If they don't care enough to take 10 minutes to put together a decent profile intro, then we don't have enough in common.

AND.....along with everyone who is irritated by the misuse of "Dominant" and "Dominate", I see a LOT of misuse of the word "women". I see so many male profiles that say "I'm looking tor a women". A women? What is "A" women? A woman with 6 breasts and 3 pussies? I'm sure that's their dream, but someone needs to tell these guys that "A women" is harder to find than the elusive unicorn....

(Confession....I was just proofreading this and I originally had "I'm sure that's there dream..." )

I don't mind much smiles! It's the effort/package that counts. :)

Actually I'm curious. If you get a weird or/and badly written PM, do you mind getting an improved version or do you consider it worse and spammy?

I'm not sure where I'm on this one myself. I appreciate it I guess. But it hasn't happened here yet. I've resent 3 I think.

Both my grammers is dead ...

No seriously, it does matter to me juts a little bit. What's more important to me is when it becomes obvious that someone just doesn't give a fat rat's ass about trying to employ good spelling or grammar. The main offenders of this would be people that have the ability to do better but insist upon using text speak.

I tell this story, frequently: I was playing one of only two MMORPGs that I have ever played and word had gotten around that I spoke a few languages. Most of the players were obviously quite a bit younger. One approached me and asked if I spoke French. I said I did and they immediately started hitting me with French txt speak. If you think it's bad, in your native tongue, try deciphering it when it's in a fourth language!

When I told this person that I couldn't understand their text speak; that they would have to type all their words out, they informed the whole realm that I couldn't speak French (until I cursed them, fluently, in beautifully non-TOS-violating French).

lol dude. :D

Ah you should play with brazilians! Some of their own countrymen don't understand others when typing! Google translate definetly doesn't get it.
But hey, it's "t3h ev0lution of d4 talk menz"

honestly though at some point it's just easier to drop u's and sup's and yo's when chating :)

Yeah, the subtitles at a face to face meet is really distracting. They always scroll the subtitles across her boobs, and naturally I'm reading the subtitles so I can scrutinize her grammar and she thinks I'm staring at her boobs.

Your opinion is much higher than mine. Probably because I've seen text speak "chum" the waters around here and bring Snark Sharks by the dozens. Ipso facto, chum, ya know?

As many others have already stated, it's the effort that is put forth that matters most to me.

Text speak, on the other hand, I tend to ignore totally. So, when someone talks to me, if it's used, it's ignored.
