Marini -> Saddened by Eric Gardner verdict (12/3/2014 5:09:00 PM)

When I heard about the verdict in NYC regarding Eric Gardner, it just made me sad.

Sad in general.
We don't need another thread, "focusing"on the protestors/and or looters.
Please address that on the several other great threads going on rioting/looting/protestors/etc.

I am just sad.
A young man that means the world to me, just turned 21 today, and he happens to be a young {very handsome, but I am biased}black man.
Sure, he is a great young man and in college, {on the right path in every way that I can think of}but on a day that I am over the moon, I have to think about how I feel about the verdict.
It is a sad day for many, but sadder for those of us that have young black men that mean the world to us.

Anyone else just sad?
[:(]

From the tape it the first cop to grab him jumped the gun and resorted to force too early.
Not to be defending the cop (because he was wrong) but there was no choke hold, a headlock yes but not a choke hold.

Marini -> RE: Saddened by Eric Gardner verdict (12/3/2014 5:22:54 PM)

I am in a state of disbelief, no trial?

Do I live in America?

NYTimes- No charges for NYD officer in chokehold death

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Saddened by Eric Gardner verdict (12/3/2014 5:27:31 PM)

My son and I were talking about it earlier. I have never been anything but a white chick from Georgia, so that is how I see the world I guess. Anyhow, we were talking about the chance of more riots and all I could say is rioting is not the answer, but fuck if I know what the answer is. Anyone have the answer to that?

Don't ask me, I didn't see murder but at a minimum negligent homicide.
Did the DA lose it and overcharge to the point the grand jury wouldn't go for it?
Couldn't they have indicted on a different charge than he asked for?
Is there some piece of evidence that totally changes what we saw?
Was the jury drunk?

shiftyw -> RE: Saddened by Eric Gardner verdict (12/3/2014 5:36:42 PM)

I am sad. VERY sad.

I wish I lived in an area with protests for this, but I'm instead supporting funds for these families.
I'm truly sorry that you fear for yours.
I wish I could personally do more than I am to fix it.

To me it is clear that camera's on cops won't make a lick of difference.

All my hugs and love to you and yours <3

An unarmed man that says he can't breathe?
Do you ever think about the "situations" that are not video taped and front and center in the news?

I live near D.C., I think I am headed out this weekend to join in.
I have been involved in marches/protests, mainly years ago against the war in Iraq, I only
become involved in peaceful protests.
shifty, it's not that I am scared, I am just very sad.

shiftyw -> RE: Saddened by Eric Gardner verdict (12/3/2014 5:49:11 PM)

I am scared. I'm in such disbelief that there isn't even a trial I can barely form words.
Cops don't apparently have to go to trials. It is an unfair system that needs major reform.

Then why is Gardner dead?

Back in the real world the NYPD has banned all forms of restraint to the head and neck since the 90's for the very good reason that it is very easy to kill someone while holding onto their head and or neck. This cop violated that rule and should face trial.

http://online.wsj.com/articles/hundreds-of-police-killings-are-uncounted-in-federal-statistics-1417577504

WASHINGTON—When 24-year-old Albert Jermaine Payton wielded a knife in front of the police in this city’s southeast corner, officers opened fire and killed him.

Yet according to national statistics intended to track police killings, Mr. Payton’s death in August 2012 never happened. It is one of hundreds of homicides by law-enforcement agencies between 2007 and 2012 that aren’t included in records kept by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

A Wall Street Journal analysis of the latest data from 105 of the country’s largest police agencies found more than 550 police killings during those years were missing from the national tally or, in a few dozen cases, not attributed to the agency involved. The result: It is nearly impossible to determine how many people are killed by the police each year.

Hastened to add

Im not sad, Im sickened. By the excuses, the racism and the ignorance shown...and the deaths by cop.
Of course now with people like ben carson blames feminism for police shootings

I said the cop was wrong. Unless there is something really big that we don't know the verdict is beyond comprehension.

If you had actually paid attention you would know that I don't see how they failed to indict.

Heart attack I would think, if you look at the video the cops hand is down on his chest thus it wasn't a crushed windpipe. I just like to be accurate as to what they did wrong. My guess is heart attack brought on by an unnecessary use of force.

A medical examiner later said that he died of a chokehold, a move that is banned by the NYPD,

Sure looks like a choke hold to me Bama... But I don't understand.. why resist and force the officers to go that far? But come on... five men and one still has to choke him... I don't understand that any more than why Wilson could not shoot the legs out from under Brown.

FR
The NY post says that the coroners report shows that neither the windpipe or neck bones were damaged by the attack.
The rule on "choke holds" is loosely worded enough that it would include headlocks.
Remember I said that even if it was a heart attack that killed Gardner it was brought on by excessive use of force.

This part looks more like one, I had previously seen the hold when they were standing, that was much different. Don't lose track of the fact that I do not understand non-indictment.
