The news has seemed particularly depressing lately. People shooting each other or choking each other or beheading each other. Nations acting like children while children are massacred by men professing to be holy. Everybody seems to be shouting at each other and no one seems to be listening. I've kind of withdrawn from it all the last few weeks (a self imposed project has helped) but there is only so much bliss I can take so I haven't detached myself completely. I haven't detached myself enough not to feel outrage, sorrow and confusion, not to mention a gnawing fear for the future of this world.

And that is why I am welcoming Christmas more than usual this year. I'm not particularly religious (I am an agnostic bordering on being an atheist) and I know all about the holiday's pagan origins. I am fully aware that I and my family and my friends go through these motions every year for no other reason than comfortable tradition. And I'm okay with that.

The time spent with family, the delight of the children and the awesome food all serve to remind that the world isn't all cold weather and cold hearts. It serves to remind that love is as much a part of the human psyche as hate and that where there is love there is hope.

I hope that the next year brings healing to all those who, in mind and/or body have been scared by life's 'slings and arrows.'

I hope that humanity will set aside the silliness of bigotry and the destructiveness of hatred some day.

I hope that each and everyone of you - whether you call the next couple of days Christmas or something else or just Wednesday and Thursday - know love and peace and health and the joy . . . and those are my hopes for today and tomorrow and beyond.

I second that. Like Marc, I'm an agnostic bordering on atheist, but I still enjoy the Christmas season. For me it's a time to remember and reflect. Some years there are more pleasant memories and reflections than others....Earlier this year I lost my mother so this will be the first Christmas for her children and grandchildren without her. Christmas is a time to remember and reflect the events of the year that is coming to a close....and also a time to be hopeful and think about what good things might be happening in the coming year. I have a few projects and plans in the works for the coming year that I hope will bring great changes to my life, and I am excited to get them going and see how they turn out.

Whether or not we get along, this is still a sort of extended family for many of us. It is good, every now and then, to reflect on that fact and to understand that we are all together on this little blue planet and we should make the best of it if we can. The last two weeks have been unexpectedly rough, but it is times like these that I can sit there and really gain a perspective on what it is to be alive, and what the people around me really mean to me. That sentiment is not exclusive to this time of year either.

Without getting too maudlin, I will simply say, whatever your viewpoint may or may not be about Christmas or the holiday you do or do not observe, it is my sincere wish for each of you to enjoy your time with friends, family or watching marathon TV... however you spend it.

May the New Year be better for you than this last year.
