"GPs will be asked to identify patients who are putting on weight under a new national programme to help fight obesity."
Identify. And then follow up with their patients.
The government isn't going to do anything about it except ask doctors to do it, and presumably pass on the data (which need not contain names, just numbers).

If they government isn't going to do anything about it, why do they need the data?
How would a GP "identify" a patient that has gained weight without names and numbers? Does the government think that GP's don't know how to do their jobs in advising their patients to reduce weight and to screen for diabetes?!?

Pre-diabetes. Preventative care for likely folks before they contract diabetes.
Clearly, the government is willing to pay for this preventative care.
Seems like a good idea to me. I can't help the phobias of those who can't grasp this.

You can't grasp why people don't want government involved in it. Once again, it's not so much about the "what" (preventive care) as it is about the "how" (government).

Preventive care is, without a doubt, a great idea. Do Dr.'s not agree? If they do agree, don't you think they're already doing this stuff (besides the identifying)?

I know I do...

EXACTLY! Win/win. As for it coming from the government (if it does) I have no problems with that either. Here in Canada we have an awesome government-run breast cancer prevention program. Women over 50 yrs old, especially those at risk for breast cancer, are contacted and urged to get a mammo. There is also info on why and where to get one in their area. I have no problem with that either, in fact it's one of the few things this stupid government has gotten right.

Actually, there are a lot of things the Canadian govt has gotten right.. believe me (as I am Canadian and spending time here in the US I see just how difficult the US govt makes everything, not just healthcare).. I never had any problems with the health care system in Canada.. it really is pretty damn good..

As a Canadian who also works in healthcare believe me there are lots and lots of stuff our government has gotten wrong when it comes to healthcare. Yes it is pretty damn good and better than in the US but it's far from perfect and is sadly going downhill at a rapid speed.

Lucylastic -> RE: Doctors told to report patients who put on weight (12/26/2014 5:03:22 PM)

Its only good if insurance companies can make money on it/deny to cover it, oh pre existing conditions too...., dontcha know. well, the last part UNTIL the ACA came along

Of course its not perfect, I don't expect perfection, but seriously, compared to what they have done down here it looks almost perfect even with its problems..

You have to remember that the posters that are opposing what the NHS wants to do are Americans and they do have a govt that wants to control every fn' thing.. the allergy med I buy in Canada is on the shelf and I can buy as much as I want, I just go to the clerk and pay for it, easy peasy, no govt involvement at all. But down here, the same allergy med I have to get from the pharmacist behind the counter and the govt only allows me to have 9.2gms/month and I have to swipe my id which is checked online thru a govt database and then I have to sign some legal mumbo-jumbo and only then do I get my meds.. If I try to buy more than 9.2gms in the month (which is 3 packages) I am told by the govt to fuck off (ok, the govt doesn't actually use those words but that's what they mean)..

Good grief, really?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/11295265/Doctors-told-to-report-patients-who-put-on-weight.html

quote:

Under the scheme, family doctors will be asked to identify anyone who has gained weight and is at risk of diabetes – particularly those aged below 40.

They will then be offered tests for pre-diabetes, followed by healthy lifestyle advice and close monitoring to ensure they are eating better and exercising more.

Two plus two makes five, now?

I think I have read about this sort of close monitoring before:

quote:

'Smith!' screamed the shrewish voice from the telescreen. '6079 Smith W.! Yes, you! Bend lower, please! You can do better than that. You're not trying. Lower, please! That's better, comrade. Now stand at ease, the whole squad, and watch me.'

A sudden hot sweat had broken out all over Winston's body. His face remained completely inscrutable. Never show dismay! Never show resentment! A single flicker of the eyes could give you away. He stood watching while the instructress raised her arms above her head and — one could not say gracefully, but with remarkable neatness and efficiency — bent over and tucked the first joint of her fingers under her toes.

'There, comrades! That's how I want to see you doing it. Watch me again. I'm thirty-nine and I've had four children. Now look.' She bent over again. 'You see my knees aren't bent. You can all do it if you want to,' she added as she straightened herself up. 'Anyone under forty-five is perfectly capable of touching his toes. We don't all have the privilege of fighting in the front line, but at least we can all keep fit. Remember our boys on the Malabar front! And the sailors in the Floating Fortresses! Just think what they have to put up with. Now try again. That's better, comrade, that's much better,' she added encouragingly as Winston, with a violent lunge, succeeded in touching his toes with knees unbent, for the first time in several years...

I am glad that for now I do not live in Airstrip One.

Let the stupidity continue Aylee.

Obesity is a big health problem, no point trying to tackle it at source eh, just wait until people die or become diabetic.

That's why I'm posting. I know that they are from the US, I'm trying to show them what a good thing programs like this one and the one I mentioned are a GOOD thing. Still far as I can see the US system has come a long way and I see "Obamacare" as a good first step in the right direction.

You act as if the government being directly involved in your healthcare...even in an advisory capacity...is o.k.

You post some bollocks at times CD.

What the fuck is wrong with having the NHS and actually using it to advise people on different issues. It brings down costs AND saves lives. God forbid anyone should have the temerity to suggest such an idea.

Aylee how can you not see that identifying patients who are at risk of developing diabetes (for example) and helping to prevent it by encouraging a healthy lifestyle as bad. It's called preventative medicine and it's a good thing.
When it's between doctor and patient, I agree. Not when it is the government who is now doing the advising.

Oh FFS......... NHS agenda is set by the Government who are voted in by the people...... Dont you understand how democracy works ?

They think all govts are as controlling as the US govt is.. They wont see it as you and I do unless they move out of the US and actually experience the difference of living in a different country for themselves..

You may get the impression that the US system has come a long way but really, the lobbyists, Big Pharma, the greedy and HMOs, etc have just found a different way to milk patients, taxpayers and the system..

You don't have to teach me anything. Maybe you're willing to give the government the benefit of the doubt but the article does not indicate what you say it does.
The article says to identify and report overweight patients to the N.H.S.. The N.H.S. will then send advice to these identified patients. That is the government...through the insurance it provides...being involved in what should be between the doctor and the patient.

[sarcasm]This is the second time you've mentioned the phrase I emboldened. When are you evil rightists going to learn that government control of everything is good (as long as leftists control the government)? Coming soon to an Obummercare provider near you!

I think it's a great idea! In fact, I think it should be expanded to doctors having to report to the government those ladies that choose to have abortions ... just so that they can be "counseled", afterwards to ensure that they don't fuck up their birth control planning, again.

I like it![/sarcasm]

Michael

Hate to burst your fucking bubble Michael but the Goverment proposing this happens to be right wing.

Your democracy is different from the illusion of democracy that exists in the US.. here its not the people/voters that control govt...

Sorry if I wasn't clear I know you meant the US. I was thinking ahead to the possibility of implementing it in the US...which might not have been a good idea. Thanks for the welcome - but we've chatted before <puts on cloak off mystery>

Just to add...... The link in the OP even states this is a service that will be offered to those that want it. By the histrionics of some on the right one would think it was compulsory.
