ORIGINAL: PeonForHer FR Is the 'Super Bowl' to do with baseball, or American football? Excellent question Peon: Hockey. Hockey was started by a man (1827 if I recall) by a guy, oddly enough, named James Hockey. The Super "Bowl" is called that because the puck that hockey players use, was actually based on a pot (a bowl) that Mrs. Hockey had (originally given to her from her grandmother, when she and James first married in 1788), it was made of wicker and tree pitch (much like tar), it was winter, all her children (3 boys, 2 girls...oddly enough, but for the goal keeper, that's how many players from each team there are at any given time on the ice) were out on a frozen lake playing with tree limbs ("why" is of course, now lost to history), it was extremely cold (a record for that period of time) and, Mrs Hockey accidentally dropped the pot, naturally, due to the temperatures, it shattered into about 8 or 9 pieces, interestingly, all in even shapes (semi round) and, kids being kids, they started knocking the pieces around on the frozen lake and, eventually, with the assistance of their Father (James Hockey) created (very crude, rudimentary) rules. Thus became the sport. As it turned out, Mrs Hockey's grandmother had actually made the pot herself. She had very limited eyesight (ocular lenses/glasses not even becoming commonly available until she was in her 70's) but she had a natural understanding of shapes and their structural abilities......so, she made this now famous pot ("bowl") out of nearly round shapes and then essentially "glued" them together with more tree pitch. Hence "bowl". (You're welcome).
