I don't get the fascination with Goldwater,he wasn't anti-war(Vietnam) and he was a segregationist ?

He was the last politician of either party (50+ years ago) who advocated a small, lean government that would stay the hell out of your business.
He is also the one who issued dire warnings about what would happen if the Republican party let "Those Preachers" start dictating party policy.

Where does Ron Paul fall on your analysis of advocating a "small, lean government that would stay the hell out of your business?"

He was also a strict segregationist....who thought the Federal gov.had no business in the Civil Rights field.
Hence my confusion [8|]

Another one who in his heart of hearts thinks the Civil Rights act should never have been passed.

Ron Paul falls on the profoundly insane analysis.

I think that was Rand Paul who said something about the Civil Rights Act. I could be wrong, but I don't think that was Ron. Either way, it doesn't answer the question posed.

...analysis of advocating...

Batshit crazy is indeed an analysis of his advocation. And answers your question in a succint manner.

His advocacy includes going back to the gold standard which would crash the whole economic system.

The government would be small and lean because it just might cease to exist.[&:]

Musicmystery -> RE: President Obama's State of the Union Speech (1/31/2015 6:32:11 AM)

Well, it wouldn't crash it. But it would likely devalue the dollar in a few severe arbitrage attacks.

Gold give the appearance of stability. But as it's an arbitrary in a fluctuating market, it actually introduces additional instability and complexity that indeed can come crashing down. It happened to the Bank of England twice. It was about to happen here when Nixon nixed the gold standard.

mnottertail -> RE: President Obama's State of the Union Speech (1/31/2015 6:38:30 AM)

We have been on the gold standard many times, notably during the great depression. nothing magical about a gold standard, it doesn't do shit for you unless the entire planet is on it and remains on it, and it ain't gonna happen, it is more magical thinking by innumerates.

And MM, I am not so sure it wouldn't crash it, there would be a hell of a devaluation as you say, but also hellacious deflation internally, all that money having to be pulled back, even if we are running at a high multiple percentage of reserve.

Unless it is some ungodly 1 million percent of reserve or some such foolishness.

But the london fix will devalue gold, and we will be left with our dicks in our hands.

Look at Putin, he was stacking gold, and he is mired in shit with that. Gotta peddle it all back to keep afloat.

Right. The government wouldn't exist. Talk about batshit crazy. That idea is batshit crazy.

Ron Paul was all about government being lean and small, and staying out of your business.

FR,

I had an investment strategy talk show on the radio today on my way in to work. They mentioned that the President has dropped the idea of taxing 529 plans. It was said that he did it after the backlash from the idea (the show wasn't the only place I heard that being the cause).

Well he said he wanted to see the two sides agree on something and it seems they agree his idea was really stupid. Mission accomplished.
