have said this before too and it bears repeating---the incredible irony that exists when liberals defend islam

You would need to put some meat on the bones of what you mean when you say: "liberals defend islam".

Should murderers be put in jail for life or hanged? Yes.

Does it follow that the same applies for terrorists? Yes.

Does this mean Islam is a Terrorism promoting religion. No.

Why? Because a very small minority of muslims engage in such acts, which is demonstrably true.

As such, how do we respond to the situation, Islam and muslims? As we would with anyone else: people are afforded due process under the law and the principle 'innocent until proven guilty' applies, and trial by association based on sharing some religious principles is clearly a nonsense under the law.

Does this mean I'm defending Islam? No. I'm defending the traditions of England and couldn't care less whether they're muslims, christians, jewish or anything else.

What does all of this mean for countries such as England and the United States? People are sleep walking into Authoritarianism. How sad that some of the most memorable and important points in history concerning advancing civil liberties, have happened in the two countries that seem to no longer care about liberty.

You know we had at you blokes in the late 1700s because Our king was not giving us the rights guarenteed us as English citizens by the Magna Carta, OI? Bit of a cock up there.

The right outcome, undoubtedly Ron.

I think it is true that they saw themselves as Englishman demanding certain rights based on certain traditions, such as Magna Carta, but I think it's also fair to say you took it a stage farther. Some commentators here stated that the United States was the next step in the progression of liberty. So, it wasn't lost on people here that while we played a role in providing for certain freedoms, the United States offered something else that we hadn't.

As far I can gather, there are certain murals on the doors of the Supreme Court: Magna Carta, Sir Edward Coke etc, which tells a story about which principles were important to Americans, and I'm sure still are to many, and certain people on this thread could do with revisiting what they had to say.

Bill of rights? As if Islamists are citizens?

Some might be citizens. Even if they're not citizens, if they're legal residents, they still have rights. Even illegal residents have rights. According to international conventions and UN declarations, all human beings have rights, no matter what their citizenship might be. If you and others wish to change that and make exceptions for those whom you identify as "Islamist," then at least you should be willing to do so by the numbers, which means withdrawing from these various international treaties and changing the Constitution.

quote:

Islamists dont fit so neatly into Western criminal justice systems

If that's the case, then it would seem the thing to do would be to change Western criminal justice systems so that they can deal with these issues. But of course, that would mean making changes honestly and publicly, without trying to slip through a few specious loopholes.

That's the real problem here, not with the Islamists, per se. If there are so many war-mongering Rightists clamoring to "fight the good fight" against Islamism, then why are they so afraid to put it down on paper and make it official? It's not that Leftists are "defending Islam"; all they really seem to be addressing is the fact that the Right is too cowardly to just come out and say what they want without equivocating or inventing their own language.

I think that those who support Western ideals should be able to understand why there are those who don't want them turned into some inconsistent, incoherent, ad hoc mish-mash. We should define our principles and stick to them, not make it up as we go along.

quote:

Their criminal code, Islamic law, criminalizes the West. And if Islamists do not at least support the murder of infidels they are criminal by their law

So our courts, our law is contemptible to them

How do you know all this? What makes you believe that you have some kind of special insight into the hearts and minds of Islamists?

quote:

You call them lunatics but that is a mental error on your part, they are sane but of a different mindset than you

It depends on how one defines "lunatic." If a few blotches of paint on a canvas can send someone into a murderous rage, one might have reason to doubt their sanity. It should be pretty easy to ferret them out, now that we know how to push their buttons and make them really, really mad.

quote:

Focused like a laser on Jihad, and using terror as a tool to further their cause

Its not a traffic ticket or patty cake, its war

If it really is war, then there should be no problem with making it official. That's what is still missing in your overall analysis. And in all candor, it really takes a lot of damn gall for Rightists to blame Leftists for anything about this whole mess. Right-wingers are the last people who should be presuming to lecture anyone on subjects like this.

Strictly speaking, this problem with "Islamism" could have and should have been nipped in the bud 30-40 years ago, but back then, the right-wingers were so irrationally obsessed with communism that they failed to properly assess the situation in the Middle East and with Islamic countries. Hell, they even traded arms for hostages with Iran, a sordid backroom deal which was also tied in with their incessant obsession over communists in Nicaragua. And we even went to war with a secular regime (twice) in order to protect theocratic Islamic monarchies, with the right-wing peanut gallery cheering every step of the way.

So, now, after decades of fuck-up after fuck-up fostered, advocated, and encouraged by the right-wing of America, you still think you can lecture people with your "expertise" on foreign policy and the Middle East?

As if the West can fix what is wrong with Islam

That can only come from within Islam itself, and those voices who would guide said ideology to a better place face the same sort of violent hostility as the artist described in the OP:

‘Blasphemous’ artwork removed from Paris exhibition

[image]http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03179/artist_3179876b.jpg[/image]

An artwork depicting high-heeled shoes on Islamic prayer mats has been removed from an exhibition after a Muslim group warned of possible violence in the wake of the Paris attacks. The French-Algerian artist, Zoulikha Bouabdellah, withdrew the work from an exhibition in a northern Paris suburb with a large Muslim population after an Islamic group told local authorities it could provoke “uncontrollable, irresponsible incidents”.

A bit of a Freudian slip on your part?
