I'm sort of a vegetarian in that I only eat anything that lives in or near water, and as you never more than 72 miles from water no matter where you live in England, then that's pretty much anything and no animal is safe.

Although it does raise an interesting philosophical question centred around empathy, not that I consider this when tucking into a lamb. I tend to eat first and ask questions later.

In terms of the OP, usually in England these environmental types are middle class lads and lasses living in holes and spending Mam and Dad's money on living in a hole in the ground or half way up a tree and doing pretty much anything to avoid work (including living in a hole in the ground). Few people take them seriously, and it seems it's no different in the United States.

I remember when Margaret Thatcher stopped school children from having milk courtesy of the State, and became universally known as ' Maggie
Thatcher the milk bottle snatcher'. Seems the students are following suit although for an altogether different motive. Who would have thought environmentalists and Maggie in cahoots.

I, personally, find it is easier to eat the meat AFTER it is dead. Hence I do not tear up too much over animal death and "suffering."

I think the argument goes that as human beings we have an inherent ability to emphasise and this transcends species, so how and when it arrives on your plate is deemed to be redundant in terms of persuasion. We don't eat dogs because they're a valued part of the family and couldn't bring ourselves to do it. Suppose it's just hard luck for cows that they don't make good pets.

Yep. However, there's a Brit regular here who has a beard and is always posting about how he hates Muslims. That's proof enough in itself that he's Al Q or ISIS, in my book.

I'll probably regret saying this, but I have a certain respect for the protesters. Yes, there's an SNL-skit quality to protesting a pizza parlor about its cartons, but two other things occur to me:

(a) Unlike yours truly, they've had the courage to look at the realities of where modern American food comes from and the character to adapt their diet accordingly. In pitiful contrast, I look the other way rather than face the cruelty that goes into my menu.

(b) At a time when "the younger generation" is often slammed for self-absorption, they bestirred themselves to raise awareness about an issue that moves them--without, so far as I can see, much personal gain thereby. Can't recall the last time I did that.
