Getting it.
I don't get arguing for the sake of arguing. Or arguing for the sake of debate, if the debate is nonsensical. I eat M&M's, I don't question why I am eating them when clearly there are cute human sized candy's performing in ads. Ad's are ads. Movies are movies. Fiction is fiction. Some pieces will cross, some not.
I saw people post their views on why ad-work, does not show the whole scope of the idea. (What a concept, there is more to life!)
But there will always be those who take everything they see on tv, movies or print so seriously.
Meh... disengage.

People being individuals with different backgrounds means OF COURSE not everyone will get it. Seems like that would be a given.

I would say instead that what they get out of it is different for the different individual.

But I am seeing an attitude from some people that bdsm is a private club and that it is somehow watered down if a married couple decide to try tying each others wrists to the bedpost with a scarf or tie.

And that's wrong. Because what others do does not affect you unless you for some self esteem issue need to feel that you're better by being kinky. And all that says is that you have unaddressed baggage which really needs to be dealt with.

Hell, if we don't want to be judged for what we do, why shouldn't we give Suzy Homemaker and her hubby the same courtesy?

Dunno, maybe it's 50-shades-of-gray after years of quiescence following The Stoy of O, or something, but, did Dominoes just do a kinky D/s advertisement mockup for spicy Sriracha's out of Israel?

I'm pretty sure D/s has been in ads since the 60's.

I am not really seeing anyone here insecurely comparing their relationship to ad-work.

Actually, that was not my point.

My point, and the questions that followed it, have to do with *why* there seems to be such a backlash against WIITWD "going mainstream"-- whether it be in advertisements, books or movies. It seems to me that some people are taking these things as some sort of affront to their own relationships. Why does it matter whether Jane or Tom reads a book or sees a movie, and decides "gee, I'd really like to do that"?

The OP has brought up the issue of people "not understanding fetish", which I think speaks to this.

I've seen a lot of these types of comments and it seems there are two underlying issues for the people who are bothered by this:

They feel like their party is being crashed. I know people who like the feeling that they are living an outlaw, taboo lifestyle, and it makes them feel less special to think the general public is getting into parts of the kink scene.

They think they're kink way is the "right" way ... and the general public does it wrong. So, like the OP, they are afraid that their idea of "fetish" or whatever will be whitewashed or corrupted by the general public.

Personally, I think both of these are silly. I do what I like, and don't care much what others do. But I see this complaints over and over
