slvemike4u -> The continuing war on poor little gun owners... (2/19/2015 8:50:43 AM)

Today's Times had an interesting piece.Seems the pro gun lobby has found a new battlefield...our nations campus's and a new battle cry...arm the poor defenseless woman.
Under the cover of helping woman defend against campus rape some lawmakers see fertile ground to opening up new locations for concealed carry....our nations colleges and universities.
So much for the "their coming to take our guns "crowds bullshit claim of having their rights stripped,it would seem the pro gun lobby is doing a bang up job of ensuring their are more guns, not less...and that we put them in the hands of a group of people who commit suicide at an alarming rate....freshmen students away from home for the first time in their lives.
While reducing rape and unwanted attention is a noble idea...this does not seem to be the way to do it,not according to our educators anyway.
Here's the link to the article...

Idaho passed it's guns on campus law last summer in spite of the fact that ALL of Idaho's colleges and universities were opposed to the bill. Personally, I'm pro-gun over all, but I don't think I agree that guns on campus is the answer to the problems. I guess time will tell whether it works or not. And yes, I think the only reason the bill was passed is because Idaho is such a Republican slanted state, often known to go against public opinion or common sense in order to promote the Republican agenda. Just my opinion.

We shall see what happens when some disaffected depressed freshman eats her own gun that mom and dad thought would keep her safe from rape.
Talk about a law of unintended consequences ......That's a guilt that will haunt and haunt a family till it tears them apart.

So, it's your belief that all these depressed students won't commit suicide if they don't have a gun?

In the college population, however, the most frequent methods are hanging and jumping.
http://cms.bsu.edu/campuslife/counselingcenter/newsfooteritems/dealingwithstressdepressionanxietysuicideandtraumaticevents/suicide/commonquestionsandanswersaboutsuicide

Given that there are an estimated 1350 suicides among all college students, that's a lot of jumping and hanging. Do you really think that giving someone a gun will encourage them to kill themselves? Because it seems as if those who want to WILL find a way.

So jumping and hanging are the CURRENT methods of choice...now let's add guns to the mix and see how that changes.
Of course for the most part females choose any method other than guns to commit suicide(it's supposedly a vanity thing) but if you open up campus's to weapons it won't just be females that have them will it ?
The other thing is that there is no surer method of suicide than a firearm, jumps are sometime survive, folks change their mind when they contemplate that long final step.Suicide by pill can be survived if medical help arrives in time...though often with horrendous results going forward for the attemptee ....firearms on the other hand are usually definative in their finality.
But by all means CD give the young folks another tool at their disposal in order to commit this final last act.

By the way,the article does address the fact that most campus rapes begin with some consensual sexual activity, than turn bad when one party(usually the female) changes their mind....where has the gun been hidden that can come out in time to avert this heinous act ?
Also alcohol is usually present in these situations....sound like a good idea to you,a bunch of inebriated young kids, add sex to the mix sprinkle with firearms.
That's going to work out nice.....do any of you read a story before attacking the story?

Aylee -> RE: The continuing war on poor little gun owners... (2/19/2015 10:41:49 AM)

The highest demographic for suicides is older white males.

It would be nice if we stopped perpetuating the campus rape myth.

I, personally, do not consider the woman found raped and strangled with her own pantyhose to be morally superior to the woman standing over the body of her attacker with a smoking gun.

Considering Mike's behavior on the forums towards me, I am not surprised to read opinions from him that disregard any measure for women to be able to protect themselves. His lack of concern for females is only outdone by his hatred of guns, which he wants to ban no matter how many it would hurt. He also uses any excuse to ban them. logic be damned.

Did you have something to say dealing with the subject matter or was this just an opportunity to take a shot at me ?
On the one hand you suggest the campus rape myth is a fallacy...but than you seem to suggest we need to arm these young ladies.
Which is it ?
As for how I treat females, trust me you are no example of that at all.
For any number of reasons.....any other issues you have with me or the neighborhood swimming pools you can get in touch with me at my profile and we can discuss them in length.
Other than that ......have a nice day [:)]

I do. Here's an idea...how about we make the campus police enforce the alcohol laws? Make liquor store owners responsible for checking IDs of their customers? I mean, campuses do have to follow the alcohol laws, don't they? How about we make the sale of anything they could hang themselves with...belts, shoelaces, bedsheets, rope, clothing...illegal? How about we find a way to bar access to any place high enough to jump from?

Now then, which of the above seems most down to earth to you?

slvemike4u -> RE: The continuing war on poor little gun owners... (2/19/2015 12:52:02 PM)

They all seem like good ideas to me CD....as long as we maintain them as gun free zones I have no issues

CreativeDominant -> RE: The continuing war on poor little gun owners... (2/19/2015 12:57:26 PM)

O.k....so No alcohol, no rope-belt-clothing, etc. sales, bans against them being able to go anywhere to jump from...how do you stop the rapes?

You forgot chaperones.

Actually, with the delicateness of females today (think tigger-warnings and micro-aggressions) I am not so sure that wimmins should even be contemplating, let alone attending school, post K-12.

if guns on campus are allowed then men will be able to carry as well.. I don't see how it helps a woman's odds.. and since drinking is so prevalent with the college crowd, well.. guns and booze don't mix well.. just sayin'

Aylee -> RE: The continuing war on poor little gun owners... (2/19/2015 11:29:25 PM)

Alcohal is already banned on a majority of campuses. I fail to see what would change.
