In regards to your post about garnering personal truths from your BDSM test results. My criticism of that "test" stems from the fact that it's poorly designed, with no scientific method that I can see. It's not really a test. More like a survey.

Lately I've been hearing a couple of terms used a lot regarding identity, "Categorised Identity" and "Narrativsed Identity" (in case you haven't heard of these) Without boring you too much, the idea behind the two, is that a categorised identity is how an entity like a government sees you, in statistics and categories. A narrativised identity is being put forth as how you see yourself. I believe the thinking is that we tell ourselves stories, we narrate our own histories, and that's how our understanding of ourselves lives and evolves. I haven't really considered whether I think this is accurate, or if I've quoted the terms properly lol so if any of this seems interesting to you please do some Googling and let me know if I'm remembering it wrong.

I'm sure you can already see the shortcomings of the BDSM survey without any persuasion from me. But hopefully I've made it a bit clearer how I see the thing as a poor tool for describing ones identity. How it doesn't seem to test anything but rather just lists the info you put into it.

Where personal truths are concerned, I'm glad you took something away from it genuinely useful. The value of insight can't be understated, neither can the ability to learn something where others wont. I wonder how many other people will be able to do the same.

I took the test. I found it to be nearly worthless as far as telling if you are submissive or dominant. There were several questions that were actually 2 part questions. Although I would agree with the first part, I disagreed with the second part so had to mark the Disagree box. Also, the questions were based on a BDSM relationship that was mostly in the bedroom. It did not take into consideration a service submissive at all. It did not take into consideration those who have a D/s relationship that is based on a power exchange rather than just kinky sex. As can be seen from the results, I am not submissive at all, as 4% is quite low. I have been accused of being a SAM at times, but the test says I am only 25% masochist because I don't like to get bitten during sex. I'm 0% bondage receiver because I don't like to get tied up with rope for sex. My preference for bondage is to get cuffs on and get restrained to a cross for a nice bit of flogging or violet wand or paddles.

An example of a two part question I remember is asking if I liked pretty rope work and would I want to do it. Yes, I like to look at it. No, I haven't the patience to actually make all those ropes and knots look pretty. So what good was the question?

The test, which was really a thinly veiled approach at aquiring contact information from people that reveal they might be interested in paying for porno or investing time and/or resources into a BDSM project, reminded me more of the BDSM checklist that were so popular 15-20 years ago. It was just a happy coincidence I took anything away from it. I remember reading a thesis a while back on someone attempting to dispute the Narrative Identity theory. It was rather interesting, although I didn't find that he succeeded in selling me on his POV.

About the boy/girl thing, I actually think quite highly of littles. I find a childlike state to be beautiful, and I think the B/l (Big /little? Not sure of the shorthand for that one) dynamic is analogous in many ways to that M/s cliché about finding a sense of freedom in chains. After all. Isn’t a child what can be found when you unpeel the barnacled layers of experience and responsibility which encase an adult. Like the rings of a tree with each new fear or doubt one weathers leaving its mark, to be buried in time within memory. It could be seen as an act of restoration in a way… Being a Big to a little.

I realised as I was writing and thinking about that, that I missed discussions about this kind of stuff. Its a shame, I've been so busy with work. I'll have to try and read/post more often.

Not at all, if anything I was wee bit defensive of my late in life epiphany from an online BDSM checklist LOL. That is a rather humbling self-truth if there ever was one.

I do hope you find time to participate more often, as I enjoy following your posts. You're intelligent and polite and I've yet to see you resort to awful behavior simply because someone disagrees with you (if you have I missed it.) I find that pretty damn impressive on these boards.

Thanks, that’s nice of you to say WD. Although, it’s not hard to look good, while everyone else rolls around in the mud… Actually, what I think is impressive is you. It doesn’t take reading too many posts about your parenting/camping or taking families in off the street, to see you’re a pretty impressive gal. I’m sure a lot of other people would agree.

For anybody who had taken this test on or after 4/25/15, please note site notice: "As of April 25, some outcomes are temporarily removed to improve their prediction formula. They should be back in a few weeks."

This means that you are missing the following 6 categories:

I'm thinking of retaking it then based on questions being revised.
