Though McCarthy cooked up an awful lot of names and, with the HUAC, managed to feed terror to the nation. To me, two of the effects were indeed, and as you pointed out earlier, a kind of self-infantalizing and an attempt (actually, quite marked success) at controlling and stifling of speech (as well as a lot of thought behind such speech).
