There are those who are not overly subtle. Then there are characters like machiavelli. Who, when his boss told him that he thought there might be a spy in his inner circle, informed his boss that he tells the spy everything he wants the spy's boss to know and nothing else and that his boss should act stupid.
Then you get some loose cannon like "tailgunner joe" who comes in and, like a bull in a china shop, causes a shitload of damage and never notices and feels put upon when he is chased out of the shop.
If you had read the verona papers you may have noticed that even with the captured code books the cryptographers were only able to decipher a fraction of the messages and they had 40 years.
If we broke the japanese code and the brits broke the german code why the trouble with the russians? Obviously it is a pretty good mechanism...but the pipeline for feeding information was a casuality of that little punk from minnisota.

The University of Michigan’s Center for Campus Involvement canceled a showing of American Sniper after 300 students protested, saying the film

“not only tolerates but promotes anti-Muslim…rhetoric and sympathizes with a mass killer. Chris Kyle was a racist who took a disturbing stance on murdering Iraqi civilians…watching this movie is provocative and unsafe to…Muslim students who are too often reminded of how little the media and world values their lives.”

This is (or was, anyway) a college, right, where learning and uncomfortable ideas are occassionally encountered?

The only kind of diversity one can’t celebrate on most American college campuses is diversity of thought. The mindless little prog mobs are easily motivated to protest anything that doesn’t fit the pre-approved Hive Mind agenda.

The point cannot be made often enough that this dumbing down of young American minds in the very places they are supposed to be expanding them is precisely the reason that leftists can get away with cheap emotional ploys almost devoid of facts to win elections.

Yes, they planned it this way.

Well, you think that St. Wrinklemeat was a lefty? Nixon? Bush? Bush? They were nothing but illegitimate appeals to emotion throughout.

I think what you have there is a handful of specious, mendacious asswipe, devoid of fact.

American Sniper screening reinstated

From the statement issued by E. Royster Harper, Vice President for Student Life:

It was a mistake to cancel the showing of the movie “American Sniper” on campus as part of a social event for students. The initial decision to cancel the movie was not consistent with the high value the University of Michigan places on freedom of expression and our respect for the right of students to make their own choices in such matters. The movie will be shown at the originally scheduled time and location.

I'm glad to hear that. The cancellation was a really bad call, especially for a university.

Awesome! Because the appropriate response to not wanting to see the movie is to. . . NOT go see the movie. Really so much easier.

Clorox has apologized for a seemingly harmless tweet about emojis that sparked outrage on Twitter.

The tweet, which Clorox (CLX) since deleted, showed a Clorox bottle made up of the new emojis released by Apple (AAPL, Tech30) as part of this week's iOS 8.3 update. Clorox tweeted, "New emojis are alright but where's the bleach."

Apple's new iOS 8.3 release consists of 300 new emojis, including kissing lips, googly eyes and a smiling poop (we wish we were making that up). But they also include racially diverse emojis, including cartoon faces with brown and black skin.

Wow. I wish I had time to go looking for things to be outraged about.

True. Not worth watching; even less worth banning.

I've been boycotting Hollywood on the lofty grounds that I can't sit for two hours. So I haven't seen a flick in ages and can't weigh in on the merits of American Sniper.

But I was sorry nobody at the university had the wit to create a teaching opportunity: a (voluntary!) discussion session after the film, maybe, or a table in the lobby at which folks could pick up info on historical context and perceived inaccuracies. Or maybe a few words from a historian about how the flick stacks up against real life.

Some interesting stuff here...

I truly believe that we are the most whiney, sensitive, thin-skinned, easily offended society in the history of the world.

Nobody has ever been as prolific at getting offended as we are.

Nobody cries over insignificant nonsense as loudly and consistently as us.

Our creativity and meticulousness are also quite notable here. We can look at any situation and extract hundreds of offensive factors that an untrained eye probably would have overlooked. We conjure up more fabricated outrages and controversies in a month than past civilizations could have mustered in a thousand years.

...a microaggression is something that college students learn about because science and history are too boring. It is, according to Wikipedia, a theory that ‘describes social exchanges in which a member of a dominant culture [or gender] (read "white" and "male". Parenthesis mine)says or does something that belittles and alienates a member of a marginalized group.’

Wait a minute, you might think. Isn’t that just a regular aggression? Don’t we already know that you shouldn’t insult and alienate people? Why do we need a new word for it?

Well, we need a new word because the old words describe things that are objectively and explicitly offensive. Microaggressions, on the other hand, are things that are only offensive because some member of an approved victim group declared it so.

It would be, by any definition, aggressive and belittling for White Guy A to walk up to a Chinese individual and say, “Hey, I hate Chinese people! Go back to China, Chinese person!”

But, as taught by the deranged social theory promoted by nearly every public university in America, a microaggression happens when White Guy B approaches a Chinese person and says, “Hi, where are you from?” or “Hello, I’m interested in your culture. What language do they speak in your country of origin?”

Non-liberals would find those comments to be utterly innocuous, even friendly, but liberals have decided that White Guy B and White Guy A are identical, and their words and actions can be interpreted the same.

A microaggression, in other words, is what happens when someone says something inoffensive but the listener chooses to be offended by it anyway. Microaggressions are closely related to micro-inequities, which is when minorities, gays, and women are ‘overlooked’ or ‘singled out’ by a ‘gesture’ or a ‘tone of voice’ that manifests a ‘deeply rooted and unconscious’ bias.

The great thing about the ‘unconscious bias’ shtick is that it allows someone to infer offensive meanings in what you say, while preventing you from defending yourself by assuming that you don’t actually know what you mean or how you feel. In the bizarre world of contemporary progressivism, only the Offended Person can tell you how you really feel, even if it isn’t how you feel. Essentially, you feel however the Offended Person feels you feel. Got it?

......I’m a sophomore at a college that shall go nameless. I saw your Twitter tirade tonight about micro-aggressions and I thought I’d let you know that my university has launched a “campaign” to make us all aware of our unconscious biases and microaggressions that serve to otherize minority groups…

Today a girl in one of my classes suggested that pulling out a chair or opening a car door for a woman could be a microaggression because it insinuates that she is incapable of doing it herself. Lots of people INCLUDING THE PROFESSOR agreed!

The full answer escapes me, but I know it requires everyone to come to terms with these five Absolute Truths:

1) If it wasn’t intended to offend you, then you shouldn’t be offended.

2) You do not get to decide someone else’s intentions. They do.

3) Being offended is a choice you make. Nobody is responsible for that choice but you.

4) Even if the slight was intended and deliberate, functioning adults understand that they must move on and not dwell over every sideways glance or rude comment.

5) You have to stop doing the trendy internet thing where you write something on a piece of paper and take a picture of yourself holding it up while frowning. It’s just annoying at this point.;

A grateful heart is a healthier heart

Recognizing and giving thanks for the positive aspects of life can result in improved mental, and ultimately physical, health in patients with asymptomatic heart failure, according to research published by the American Psychological Association... To further test their findings, the researchers asked some of the patients to write down three things for which they were thankful most days of the week for eight weeks. Both groups continued to receive regular clinical care during that time.

"We found that those patients who kept gratitude journals for those eight weeks showed reductions in circulating levels of several important inflammatory biomarkers, as well as an increase in heart rate variability while they wrote. Improved heart rate variability is considered a measure of reduced cardiac risk," said Mills. "It seems that a more grateful heart is indeed a more healthy heart, and that gratitude journaling is an easy way to support cardiac health."

This doesn't surprise me, says the guy who started the Find Joy in Each Day thread.

In my own medical misadventures, gratitude often does correlate with feeling better, both physically and emotionally. I'm not entirely sure which was the causality runs, though. Is gratitude indeed making me feel better? Or does feeling better give me the energy and focus needed to pierce the miasma and find reasons for gratitude?

Seriously, CD - do you see these 'maxims' as free of holes in all circumstances? You don't have any criticisms of them at all?
