thishereboi -> 15 Year Old Arrested After Police Mistake Comb for Gun (3/11/2015 1:03:39 PM)

The teen said the ordeal left her scared and confused.

“I didn’t know what was happening. They took my clothes and my stuff – it was really uncomfortable.”

The girl’s mother, Simone, says police thought Rochae was a boy because she was wearing her hoodie.

We might need some classes in weapons identification for cops, as well as gender identification. Just the basics, since they don't have that.

To be fair, it *does* look like The Wolverine's claw. Even a little-girl-wolverine could be dangerous. In theory.

mnottertail -> RE: 15 Year Old Arrested After Police Mistake Comb for Gun (3/11/2015 1:27:16 PM)

But look at them both, a serious paranoia on the cop side.

Here is another story about it.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2982717/Armed-officers-arrest-schoolgirl-15-hold-cell-nine-hours-claims-police-mistook-afro-comb-GUN.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

I suppose the handle could look rather suspicious in one of those grainy black and white CCTVs. To add to that when the police visited she could not produce the comb.

Great! Now we won't be able to walk around with hair picks anymore!! What will I do?!? [:D]

Those officers fucked up. I hope appropriate justice is served.

FR

Gawd, there are going to be some embarrassed coppers now. Not up there with the escaped 'tiger' on a farm - which the cops only realised was a big toy when the police helicopter, packed with sharpshooters, blew it over when landing nearby. But still bad. Heh.

I note that it is a black power brand pick. Not good quality.

Did you guys even bother to..READ...the article? From the OP's link:

Rochae Davis of Croydon had been carrying an afro comb in her waist band while walking with friends. The girl was later accosted and arrested after police said video footage showed her walking with a gun.

I think that video footage should be examined a second time.....

Yes. Anyway, here in Britain the story is all over the papers - you couldn't *not* read it. The police ballsed up. What's your point, Joe?

Yea, I wouldn't want to be the guy who made that call. Perhaps next time he will think to use the zoom feature.

It also makes me wonder about the system over there. I can understand going and questioning her if they thought she had a gun but to arrest her and lock her up for that many hours when they hadn't found anything? Seems a bit excessive to me.

It *was* excessive. All sorts of extra procedures would be involved anyway because the girl was a minor. But I suspect that much work was involved in trying to work out how best to manage the mess that had been made. Any 'system' involving a (putative) firearm would be crude, even if it existed at all. The local police would likely have 'sat on' the situation awaiting advice from the specialists (insofar as there were any specialists). And, sure, there'd be awkward questions about the fact that the girl was black.

So they did everything wrong?

That people get a bit hysterical over an issue that could have been solved with some 'rather average' detective work. You know, the kind that most police officers get in school? I see a video of a person possibly carrying a firearm and its illegal. I approach them and place them under guard while I conduct a search of their person. Finding no firearm, to inquire further on the video what brought the original argument forward for the investigation. May take some guess work and study, but I'm sure I'd put the pieces together. Once found that the girl never had a gun, release them and apologize. Explaining what had happen.

Sounds like poor training is the problem, rather than anything else.

Could have been worst indeed. She could have had a dark hoodie, armed with a bottle of ice tea and bag of skittles.....

And tried to beat someones head into the ground. Of course in England she could have killed him because he would not have been able to stop her.
