Fair dues. She's a beautiful lady with a helluva figure. I just have some kind of mental block, when it comes to that type of tattoo display.

Really?

Of course, having different standards and different ways of treating one sex vs the other is unsurprisingly sexism.

Ah. So being straight, and courting only one sex or flirting with only one sex is sexism?

Got it.

So, only 100% bisexual people have any chance at all of being non-sexist.

Of course. Male and female differences can't be acknowledged (even though real) if our goal is to create a truly egalitarian (and completely insane) society.

I totally agree with what kirata just wrote...its particular insane when standards have to be changed or ignored that highlight differences, or when despite the best laid hopes and plans of feminists, women refuse to think/act like men.

and can say too, im not a fan of tattoos but, I never had any problem at all with the "art" on jadzia dax, who was my favorite star trek girl.

The irony of the topic of benevolent sexism, and the discussion and showing or display of "hitable"dream women, is giving me the giggles.
Thanks chaps

Interesting to bring up Jadzia in the context of this thread, since I remember a scene where she's sparring with Worf and says "I hope you're not holding back because I'm a woman. If it makes it any easier, think of me as a man. I've been one several times."

I don't think Worf was actually a sexist (at least no more than what was acceptable under Klingon traditions), although he did say that Earth women were "too fragile," and (as shown in a later episode) he felt he had to restrain himself around humans because he feared he could injure or kill someone.

That may be part of where "benevolent sexism" comes from, since men are often raised and conditioned to be aware of their own strength and to hold back and restrain themselves. Men have to walk a fine line, since society looks down on men who are bullies and thugs, but society also looks down on men who are wimps and weaklings as well. It's not really the same with women, who can choose to be either tough or weak without the same kinds of judgments from society.

Of course, the problem for men is that it's not always readily apparent whether a woman identifies as "tough" or "weak" (that is, by the standards by which men are judged as "tough" or "weak"), making it more difficult to know automatically where "benevolent sexism" is acceptable and where it's not.

Zonie, I actually did the test mentioned about a month ago, Im not sure if it was in relation to a topic here or another site, I dont remember.
The methodology used, and the explanations of the results was a long long read,
Im not sure wether its accurate but it was worth looking at....of course the furor(sorta) surrounding it, is totally coming from the media expressions.

No giggles!

You are SUPPOSED to be feeling oppressed right now since they are using their male privilege to discuss women they would be willing to have sex with IN PUBLIC! And it is considered NORMAL!

Because. . . ya know. . . nice ladies do not do that sort of thing. Only sluts.

After typing that and then re-reading it, it is lucky for my computer that my coffee cup is currently empty.

Wait...so you're telling me the phrase "I'd tap that" is sexist? I need to curl in a ball and reexamine my life choices now.

No no, I think that we are all safe. Looking at Bounty's answer:

"I'd tap that," just means that they want to tap into their intellectual abilities. Yep, yep yep.

Which is a good thing as my fainting couch has laundry on it.

Hell, I meant "I'd hit that" in terms of BDSM impact play. I thought that was the foundation for this site?

zonie--I appreciate your insightfulness there, and I agree also with what you said...

to follow up on the scene you described, and so many others like it in contemporary movies:

I appreciate what might be called the "girl power" movement, for instance I love katniss in hunger games, and tris in insurgent.

but I struggle with representations (seen too often in movies) that seek to act is if gender differences are non-existent when it comes to physical skills and combat.

higher skill levels can make up for some comparative differences in strength, but on the whole and all else being equal, the bigger/stronger/faster person in the confrontation wins.

so when brad pitt and Angelina jolie go at it in mr. and mrs. smith, or Collin Farrell and kate beckinsale in the remake of total recall, or worf and jadzia, and the women not only hold their own but actually score major points so to speak, I find it irksome. not because I don't want "girl power" but rather because, as I mentioned above, it seeks to eliminate differences between men and women.

people are still running around believing serena Williams could play successfully on the men's circuit.

I see it as an over the top response to the old and unfortunate criticism of you "throw like a girl."

the problem is, and I think this has been mentioned here, we all too often (maybe the perpetually aggrieved crowd) want to equate differences between genders with good/bad moral value judgments.

what you also described is manifest in competitive wrestling when boys have to wrestle girls. there was an interesting story a few years ago about a high school boy in iowa I think it was who was favorite to win the state tournament, but drew a girl in the first round, and based on certain principles he held dear as to how to treat females, he refused to wrestle and he defaulted to her.

I think the test was mentioned in one of the articles, and it asked a question about whether women should be saved first on a sinking ship. I think the idea of "women and children first" might have been more of a biological necessity back when humans were more sparsely populated and a scarcer commodity.

It didn't really work out quite that way on the Titanic, and I suppose if men are panicked and scared for their lives, there's a chance that "chivalry" could be tossed to the four winds.

In most ordinary situations, though, I don't see anything wrong with being nice or polite. Holding a door open for someone is a simple favor that one might do for anybody, male or female. If I'm going into a store and see someone walking behind me, I'll hold the door open for them out of common courtesy. It really depends on the situation.

If I'm on the bus and notice that the seats are filling up to the point where people are standing, I might be inclined to stand without explicitly "offering" the seat to anyone in particular. Since I'm able-bodied and healthy, I realize that there are those who might need the seat more than I do, although I wouldn't feel right about making that choice or judgment for someone else.

I saw this somewhere else (Facebook, maybe) and actually related to it as a result of an entirely different route: through Stephen Potter's 'Oneupmanship' (Potter coined that term). Potter described techniques one could use in order to get one up on one's 'opponent' without him or her being able to say or do anything about it because, in so doing, he or she would look bad - particularly ill-mannered - in some way. (Thus, for instance, if you're fed up of a pal who's always bragging about his physical prowess, make sure you offer him physical help at every point ... offer to slow down when walking with him so that he can keep up; take him by the arm when you both get on the train; offer to carry one of his bags, etc, etc. When he gets irritable with all this, put a reassuring hand on his shoulder and look deeply sympathetic - which will, of course, irritate him even more. Etc, etc.)
