Oy! I saw this on "The Five". What a bunch of crap!

One of the commentators said that when someone needs to publish a paper (publish or perish, indeed!), some have a tendency to make up a term/issue and then use some very mis-construed logic to advance their opinion.

I probably shouldn't but I will share this, here and now:

I hold doors open for ladies and walk on the correct side of the sidewalk and help them get their coat off and hold a chair for them and ... because I had to grandmothers to whom my, being a gentleman was paramount. I do it to honor the memory of my grandmothers who (I feel) deserve to be revered by everyone.
When someone comes up with this kind of fakakta reasoning, it's actually fairly insulting to me.

I will relate this story, also:

I was in Arizona. I don't know why I was on the bus but I can only guess that my car was in the shop. It was 103° that day. The air conditioning on the bus was not working and the bus was packed.

This lady, who was obviously very pregnant (she must have been close to delivery) got on the bus. I stood up and gestured toward my empty seat. She looked at me like I'd just spat on her shoes and said: "I'm pregnant; not crippled."

"Fuck ya, then. Stand for all I fuckin' care."

I sat back down but I was miffed at her ignorance and arrogance.

I guess guys simply can't win.

I'll keep being polite and doing things for women, but not because of any thought that they are incapable.

bounty44 -> RE: Benevolent Sexism (3/14/2015 5:16:23 AM)

slightly off topic---but you mentioned the five---ive got a major crush on dana perino!

bounty44 -> RE: Benevolent Sexism (3/14/2015 5:23:18 AM)

in seriousness though...

what the researcher is saying however is "true" if you come from the perspective that deference shown towards women, is a tacit understanding by women that the deference is rooted in their being in need of that deference, that is, that they are somehow weaker/less than men, that they need men, and that this is a way for men to show (and perpetuate) their dominance. it's a really small version of "the patriarchy!"

its a hard core feminist position and its a rejection of the traditional roles most of us have grown up with.

I'm going to quote this, another time and accentuate the parts I feel are important:

So ... starting with "IF ..." one must already buy into the "all women are victims, whether they know it or not" mentality.

Then, you aptly state that it is a hard-core feminazi position.

I am not up-braiding you. I am saying that even in your "defense" of the veracity of the belief, you had to position it in a specific way or it falls apart.

There are a couple of ladies that I can think of that no longer enjoy my largess, when they have shown that they are completely freaked-out by my desire to treat them like a lady.

There are even a couple on this very site who have found themselves on my hide/block list rather than my telling them what true twat waffles I think they are (and thereby, no longer behaving like a gentleman).

Romney's her married name---I don't know though if her husband is related to mitt.

I wrote mitt Romney once a bunch of years ago, he didn't write me back but I still like him a far sight better than anything/anyone on the democrat side. I am glad he decided to not run for president again too.

I've heard and read those sort of thoughts before, and on the whole, find them insightful and I am in agreement with some of them.

if anything, what it at least points out is how difficult it is to be female these days...

Aylee -> RE: Benevolent Sexism (3/14/2015 3:21:38 PM)

Being nasty is a sign of oppression. Being nice is a sign of oppression. Warmer, dry winters are signs of AGW. Colder, snowier winters are signs of AGW. We have always been at war with Eastasia.

dcnovice -> RE: Benevolent Sexism (3/14/2015 3:39:43 PM)

I thought we were at war with Eurasia. [;)]

dcnovice -> RE: Benevolent Sexism (3/14/2015 3:46:51 PM)

FR

I have a hunch that we could halve the friction of modern life if we all agreed to assume that folks' intentions are decent until proven otherwise.

Really?

Of course, having different standards and different ways of treating one sex vs the other is unsurprisingly sexism.

Well, then, we've finally found a difference. That many tattoos, that big , in so many places is a definite deal breaker for me. I want to be next to a lady not a canvas.

But wait, my brother...in my thoughts, I always picture her WITHOUT the tattoos. They are, after all, MY thoughts. ~grins~
