What do you think the response would be if Rich Lowry made this statent on FOX News?
Nothing says "let's go kill some Christians like hip-hop/rap......

Yet again, MSNBC had to issue an on-air apology, after one of its left-wing guests on Wednesday made an outrageous statement. On Now With Alex Wagner, Ebony.com's senior editor Jamilah Lemieux responded to Senator Ted Cruz's statement about listening to country music after 9/11 by snarking, "Nothing says, let's go kill some Muslims like country music"

Oh, people on Faux Nuze make far more stupid statements than that.

In the spirit of the "Just stop and think for a moment" topic title...

Just stop and think for a moment about this one.

Thanks for the observation. Have an answer?

That is the answer.

PeonForHer -> RE: Just stop and think for a moment... (3/27/2015 5:53:15 PM)

These two statements both seem pretty shitty to me.

.... Am I missing something?

bounty44 -> RE: Just stop and think for a moment... (3/27/2015 6:07:54 PM)

as a small aside, this is interesting:

researchers categorized music according to pairs of descriptors: Reflective and Complex, Intense and Rebellious, Upbeat and Conventional, and Energetic and Rhythmic.

the upbeat and conventional category which included soundtracks, country, religious and pop, positively correlated with political conservatism, and negatively correlated to political liberalism.

the short of it, speaking very broadly---liberals don't like country music and conservatives do.

and yes---liberals would go bananas if rich lowry said the conservative version of what Jamilah Lemieux said and i suspect some would likely be calling for his head (which is to say, his job).

No music glorifies violence like rap.

Didn't they once say that about heavy metal, re bikers ... and, further back, any kind of 50s rock music (I'm recalling the dangerous influence on teens Elvis Presley was feared to have had, for instance).

slvemike4u -> RE: Just stop and think for a moment... (3/27/2015 6:55:00 PM)

I'm not sure the phrase "thug life" was in use...but I take your meaning.
Music is often the language of the disaffected...and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Having a voice is a hell of an outlet.
Every generation needs their own voice and every generation speaks with multiple voices, hence differing genres.
No real harm ,least not none I object to.

In short, people who listen to jazz are smart, liberal, adventurous, and poor; people who listen to heavy metal are smart, liberal, adventurous, athletic, and prone to social dominance; people who listen to Madonna or the “Dancing With Wolves” soundtrack are agreeable, conscientious, conservative, rich, happy, dumb, emotionally unstable, and hot; and people who listen to hip hop are extraverted, agreeable, liberal, athletic, and hot. Well, those are the tendencies at least (I’ve known some smart Madonna fans, though I have to say that they were pretty emotionally unstable).

If they mean "liberal" in the classic sense, then, yes. If it's meant as "opposite of conservative," then, no.

MercTech -> RE: Just stop and think for a moment... (3/27/2015 7:09:46 PM)

Every generation of teenagers seems to want to shock their parents with their music choice. And, as a bit of teen angst rebellion, it is understandable.

What is insidious is when the music is taken seriously and violence is taken to be something commendable.

Remember the cry "Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll"? Is the new teen cry really "Pimps, Hoes, and drive-by shooting"? Yep, I'm a crochety old fart that shakes his head at romanticizing destructive violence. "Gangsta Rap" and "Narco Corrido" are so NOT on my play list.

If you haven't run across Narco Corrido; it is the same deification of drugs and violence done in Spanish (I will admit it is more lyrical than rap.)

A favorite T-Shirt: "You can't spell CRAP without RAP"

Lucylastic -> RE: Just stop and think for a moment... (3/27/2015 7:14:49 PM)

Look what punk did in the 70s. The if you play ....helter skelter, backwards. Blah blah
fifties and sixtties had certain places banning dances, sixties mods n rockers , eighties with its gender fluidity n "glamour.
music speaks to people in different ways.
Jazz and the blues was devil music
Who is rich lowry?

i dont listen to country , i dont listen to rap,
i stopped to think for a moment, the comment was out of order.
anythong else?

I always say that rap is misspelled. It's always spelled without the "silent C" at the beginning. lol

I thought that was the case till more recently ... now, the vast bulk of it seems just bland to me. On the other hand, admittedly, most of what I know comes as a result of the appalling talentless garbage they play at my gym - and I've come to suspect that all music at all gyms has to pass a very stringent crapness test before they'll play it.

They were not worried about Elvis's music, it was his hips that scared them. He just couldn't seem to keep them still and for some reason that really shook people up.

Elvis hip rolls as twerking in the 60s.... Yep, Elvis was only shown from the waist up on the Ed Sullivan show as his hip movements were "vulgar and sexually suggestive". Compare that with Marilynn Manson giving a BJ on stage during a concert.... way over the top.

Elvis was quite the rocker prior to his induction, once his service was up and he went Hollywood,it didn't seem to matter what his hips were doing anymore.
The music was so sanitized no amount of movement could engender fear in anyone [:D]
