I'm buggered if I know if I am real or even exist at the moment..

To me, you are a completely amazing Quantum Person... I've never had the pleasure of contact with your biobody suit, but I would say that, at least on a quantum and philosophical level, you certainly do exist...

For you, IB:

"Oh.. when I'm old and wise, bitter words mean little to me, autumn winds will blow right through me...and someday, in the mists of time, when they ask me if I knew you, I'll smile and say "He was a friend of mine." and the sadness will be lifted from my eyes.... when I'm old and wise." We always here Dominants and submissives asking for or stating that they are "real" and we all chortle a bit, making jokes, snickering because of course WE are all real

I have at once been called not real and then have someone amazed how real I am.

What does real mean to Y/you?

Truth is a very common claim, but a rarely shared trait in the end. That is my experience, at least.

As for what is real or not, it seems well enough a subject to write about when one considers the opposite terms—imaginary, false or fake. It has often struck me how the latter terms plague many things in human acts. Being true, being real is well enough—but it should not be boasted of or worn like a badge to spite others. So often it speaks of one who is more in love with himself than with being true. Much like concience, truth speaks gently; it doesn't seek the spotlight in a popularity contest. It doesn't need to.

Great song - one of my favorites by them.

In reply to the OP, the word that comes to mind is "genuine."  Such genuineness (is that a word?) is demonstrated by the way one conducts him/herself.  An "AA phrase" that I love:  "You're talking so loud I can't hear you."

Basically, for myself, real means that both myself and others are human; capable of the same mistakes that any and everyone can make, capable of recognizing  faults that everyone has, and capable of taking responsibility for them. That, to me, is what makes a person real.

"I'm Real"
I could never figure that out either.
If you're contacting another person about engaging in this type of lifestyle, I would think that that, in itself would mean that you're interested in the lifestyle.
It's just a redundant saying I guess.

A real person means what he says and backs up his talk with actions. In terms of relationships, a real person takes a relationship past the flirtation / courtship phase --- and converts the floating possibilities between two people into a sustainable, working reality.

Being fake or unreal comes about when promises, intents, and representations made in the flirtation / courtship phase turn out to be puffery, manipulation gambits, lies, or fantasy projections one is afraid to follow up upon.

Solid and real people also work through problems and don't run from them.

Real people can hear and accept constructive criticism graciously.

Real people admit and take ownership of their mistakes.

Real people go out of their way for others.

Real people take risks.

Real people with experience have good sense about the lines separating fantasy / reality, the workable v. the unworkable, and real people know and are comfortable with their own limits.

I guess "being real" to me depends on the context its used.

If your talking about within bdsm, its someone who is/has actively participated.

If your talking about a "real Master", its someone who has mastered themself.

If your talking about a "real bdsm Master" its someone who deems themself so and is capable of assuming that position with someone who will accept them as such.

If your talking about  "a real flower" its one that has been grown and not artifically made from plastic or whatever.

If your talking about a "real person" generally means to me someone who is grounded and down to earth.

If your talking about "what is real" in a philosophical or spiritual sense...I guess I would have to look at some aspect that is totally non-changeable, everything else apart from that is a figment of our own imaginations *grin*

Go read "Velveteen Rabbit".

Paraphrased:
When asked by Rabbit, "What is REAL?" the Skin Horse replied, "Real isn't how you are made, it's a thing that happens to you."
"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.
"Sometimes, but when you are Real, you don't mind being hurt."
"Does it happen all at once?"
"It takes a long time. That's why is doesn't often happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Once you are Real, you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

Master Fire,
with a grateful bow to Master Steve Sampson

Real is the honest acceptance and embrace of life itself, with all its ups and downs, curve balls and glorious, joy-filled moments.  It's the acceptance that wiitwd is a facet of our lives, as much as taking out the trash or cleaning up after a sick crumbsnatcher.  It's the acceptance that no one is perfect and that leather probably isn't the best attire for making dinner and that frying bacon while nude is not a smart idea.  It's the acceptance that while a kneeling woman is a pleasure to behold, she does have to stop at some point because it is hard on the knees.  It's knowing that your happiness depends on you, not someone else.  It's the understanding that most good things take work and effort on your part as well as on your partner's part.  It's the knowledge that one doesn't have a kink life and a vanilla life, you have a life.  It's embracing another, in spite of their foibles, simply because you love them.  It's the ability to recognize that there is no fantasy life, but there is life with magical moments.  Finally, it's accepting the magic and embracing the mundane.

Reality is the moment in time which we percieve as  the *now*. It is a moment that we will never escape-until death takes our breath from us.

To be real, is to accept that moment for what it is, rather than what you would wish it to be.

To be real is to let go of all pretenses. It is to be psychologically/emotionally naked, to face one's own vulnerabililities and allow them to be seen and shared with another. To be real is to be known.

IMHO I think real is a relative term. Real to the person who is viewing it. I've been called a fake submissive before and even though it annoyed me I had to look at the situation itself. This was coming from someone that way lying his way around the net to get the things he wanted and to make it seem like he was someone other than himself. He may have fooled a lot of people but I could see the truth. One of those collectors so to speak. I think that each and every individual has an "ideal" of that which is real and fake in their mind. Children could swear that an imaginery friend is living and breathing right there beside you and in their mind it is. Yet adults don't see or believe in the same thing.

"Real" To me, would be anyone that is true to themselves. Because if you can not be true to yourself, you surely can not be true to others. Experience levels, do not equate the "real"-ness of a person. Their inner person does.

I love real people, you can have the most fun with them in any situation. Because they are the ones without pretence, walls, judgements and prejudices.

They're hard to find, but when you do find them, hang on to them. They'll be your friends for life and they are the most fun to have at play party's and such.

"Real" just means "someone with the same conception of BDSM as what I'm comfortable with."  Anyone more casual is "fake" or "a player"; anyone more intense is "living in a fantasy world."

I kinda like how you think mnottertail. It has a raw vulgar beauty to it. No offence intended, just "real" kudo's.

To me it  means someone who is honest about their want and needs...

When using to to refer to someone "a real Mistress" "a real slave"....for the most past to me the term "Real" means someone who actaully engages in BDSM or S & M or whatever you want to call it.....in actual life... they don't just plan to play at it online to shoot their load...
