Celeste and Bladewing summed it up nicely; real (to me…(in this context)) is someone who actually participates in wiiwd…not merely playing an online game.

By my way of thinking feastie took and tied a wonderful red bow around it all.

Great.. this shit gets older than the sub/slave debate.... it doesn't matter what words mean to the many... only what it means to the one or two it needs to.

Real means that someone loves me and has rubbed the fur off me in patches and my seams are starting to unravel and maybe an eye has fallen out, and they tell me all their problems and take me wif 'em everywhere they go, and play wif me...

Ok, is it narcissistic to reply to myself? LOL

I got to thinking about what I said and I realized I didn't explain what my definition. Being real means you are on an active, AWARE journey in discovering who you are. Then, you live your life with honesty and integrity, not hiding who you are and being faithful to your own life tenants and beliefs. It doesn't mean you have to shout it from the mountain top, of course; that's not always appropriate. But, it does mean that you have a sense of well-being and acceptance about yourself and the way you live your life.

We awaken into being being true to ourselves, into being real. We find that being loved by another can begin our journey into being real; we are real to them, they can see us in our true form, like the velveteen rabbit was real to his Boy. This can lead us to tranform fear of ourselves into it's oppostie, love for ourselves. When we are real to ourselves, we change and are real to everyone, in much the same way the fairy changed the velveteen rabbit into being real for everyone (namely the other rabbits).

Maybe that helps...maybe not. Makes perfect sense to ME.

To be real is to be authentic. It is not a matter of online or offline, but presenting the self as who one really is. That in turn means one must be self-aware to know and comfortable with oneself to share authentically.

Ok, cuddleheart, I'm not attacking you, but I really would like to know if you mean this the way it reads.

If the only people that are real to you are the people that want the same things as you do, then the only real people are those that are just like you?

yes and that equates that the rest of us are umm  fakes??  or maybe just illusions.  Seems to me the statement is not well thought out or missing a phrase or two for clairification.

It seems like everyone is going to play musical chairs and at the first sign of dischord, head for the rhubarb.....

Ron, have I ever told you I love you? Anyone who can get their point across so consistently without using standard cliches, is worthy of admiration in my eyes.

"head for the rhubarb"...love it, gonna use it...

As for real...Hmmm, I like Celeste's definition. When it comes down to anything, if you don't do it, don't say you are it. A person who has never written a paragraph outside of a high school exam can't call themselves a real writer. A person who has never sung anything except Happy Birthday, can't call themselves a real singer.

As for Caretakr's comment, that's what I consider a more general definition of real when people say they are real. Masks are fun, for playtime. But I have no interest in being around people who rely on them to get through the day.

Real is one who is honest, makes mistakes, can admit them and learn from them.  Real is one who can still be Dom/me, sub/slave and see their partner in bad light and still know they are the one they are with and want to be with.  They can see the other when they are sick, in their worst clothes, needing a shower, frustrated, angry, silly, goofy, wrong,  (you get the idea) and yet still know the D/s and BDSM is still in their life.  Know they will not run at the first sign of trouble, know trouble will occur and it can be overcome together.

Just a few rambling thoughts

Oh Dear! what has happened to us????

We as humans must identify with a sense of community--for those that are not--we feel fear, mistrust, hostility--but fakes? No, I am sure not, but perhaps.

Now as for real, we have seen people say--"real is what I think real is"meaning if it works for Me, then its ok--much like religion---if I feel the spirituality--who can say I am wrong--in one week, I went from pretentious and fake to unpretentious and real---is it a case that one "mans" trash is another mans treasure? I think so---what is at issue here at CM is the hasty generalization that if your style isn't My style, "you
are a fake"---so if I am Republican and your are Democrat--you are a fake--I think not---

let Me not judge My brother until I have walked one mile im his moccasins, does that make Me real or not?

Evidently, MH, from this post, REAL, is what the person seeing You perceives in You and not about who You are. i can't even tell You how many times Doms  told me "you're not a 'real' sub" because i wasn't down on my knees to them in 5 minutes.  Yet, anyone who knows me and sees my herstory can plainly see that being submissive is part of me as much as the color of my eyes.

So, i think "real" is more about a person's perceptions than about the person they're perceiving - if that makes sense. LOL.
