Or, how sometimes a good idea has large financial consequences.

Ok, military grad hummers and Abrams tanks run on diesel. Most aircraft the U.S. military uses are running JP8 fuel that qualifies as ultra pure diesel than any diesel engine can love. Doesn't it make sense to have diesel motorcycles to replace the fleet of scout motorcycles? Well, they called for examples and boiled it down to this one:

This is based on a Kawasaki KLR 650 dual sport.

The going price for a used one is about five grand.

But, if you want one with the Mil-Spec diesel; you have to cough up $133,000.00 US

Some general information on diesel motorcycles

With what the USMC is paying per unit; no wonder Hayes gave up their plans to market a civilian diesel motorcycle engine.

I actually started thinking of diesel motorcycles and doing some research after talking with an author buddy about post apocalyptic recovery scenarios. Cetane based fuels (bio diesel) are rather easy to make. Octane, not so much.

The combat logistics of having a single fuel for all internal combustion engines was where I was seeing diesel motorcycles making sense. Diesel does have a lower power to weight ratio over gasoline engines. But diesel is still a better power to weight ratio than alcohol fueled. But, not going tech head on this today.

Hmm, no personal experience but I'll wager a M/C diesel wouldn't vibrate any more than a Milwaukee designed V-twin.

Where are you getting a price tag of $133,000? I keep coming up with $18,500 per unit. That maybe pretty high for cycle; but its purpose is extraordinary to a regular cross country cycle.

If you've been to the Harley store recently $18,500 for a motorcycle isn't much. Id be interested to see where the $133,000 price is coming from as well. Oh, and from my discussions with a few Marines, their motorcycles have to be delivered in place from the back end of an airborne cargo plane and/or off the ramp of an amphibious vehicle. I'd expect it to be a little different than a used Kawasaki and for the price tag to reflect that.

I think....but I'm not sure....it was a reference to the bad military spending $133,000 for something he could get used on ebay for $5,000. Correct me if you have a different guess.
