I had doctors appointments today,and other errands to run....so talk radio occupied a good portion of my day.

It's been a long tiring day so I don't have a shit load of links to supply,but basically what I'm to understand is that certain black leaders in the Baltimore community have accused Baltimore's Mayor and even President Obama of the black on black crime of using the "thug " word.

Supposedly thug is now little more than dog whistle code speak for the N word.

I have to tell you as I was driving along I was gobsmacked that anyone had the balls to put forth such a preposterous suggestion.

A thug is a thug is a thug.

Plain and simple(in my head anyway).

It was suggested,by a voice I usually listen to for comedic value alone, that this was nothing more than an attempt to control and re-direct the conversation by taking control of the language you are allowed to use.

I call bullshit on this type of language distortion,there were thugs when and where I grew up they were as white as I .
There are thugs in Baltimore,many of which could be seen on our tv screens setting fires and destroying property.....it is not racist to use language as it is intended to be used .

Calling something what it is is a virtue ,not a dog whistle,in my opinion anyway.....

Yes...I brought this up in the now-vanished Baltimore thread. Councilman Stokes...black...got very upset when Erin Burnett called the violent protesters...those burning and looting...thugs. He huffed and puffed and said (words similar to the following): These are our children...they're upset...you don't call children thugs...you might as well just call them ni$%#rs.". I have to say I admired Erin Burnett for once because instead of her doing the usual "bow to the 'victim' shuffle", she stood her ground and asked him: " well sir...what would you call these violent criminals?"

Why is it considered "reasonable" that I object to such a notion.

I don't see this as a left or right issue,it's a word that originates in India used to describe a professional class of robbers and murderers(thugge)

It has always signified a criminal in my lifetime,a criminal irrespective of color

Rappers sort of co-opted it to signify a certain type of urban lifestyle they labeled this the "thug life",but that didn't change the meaning of the word or grant any one race ownership of the word.....so how can it now be the new N word(which by the way has itself a dictionary definition,but due to it's historical connotation's one can not,understandably use it )

I guess the question is do we all sit back and say "okay you own this word you get to re-classify it and due to that I'm now afraid to use it".....the you being anyone who would claim it's the new N word.

In my opinion,no....you don't just get to decide what a word means and than based on that decision attack anyone who uses that word.

Don't get all paranoid on us when we're noticing nice things about you're behavior. It's not just this thread. In several threads, you've been choosing words that are less pejorative and more inclusive. We appreciate it.

This doesn't appear to be an issue that splits down the usual left/right divide....this is just about word usage and the right of a segment of the population to take a word and place it out of bounds to the remaining ,larger ,population.

I was walking out of a store, banging my pack of cigarettes that I'd just bought, preparing to open them. A young man walked up to me and said: "Yo, lemme git one o' those." I smiled (as best I could) and said: "I don't think so."

"You're white trash!"

"And you're ignorant.", I responded. My meaning was that I don't identify as white (others like to do that for me) as my family history includes some abhorrent behavior perpetrated on us by illegal European immigrants.

"Is that some kind of code word for 'N_____'?"

I meant ignorant but it's amazing how an attitude of racism was so readily assigned to me by someone who clearly was ignorant (of a lot of things).

Fist mike what is your personal definition of the N word... dumb to have to say N word anyway.

Then what would be your definition of thug?

Then lets see if they match... for me I never used the N word but i would say the general 1900's definition would be lazy and stupid.

I don't see where that fits thug... to me would be one performing a criminal activity.

N word is derogatory by race where thug is a description that could fit any race.

So we agree.... in a short time we will not be allowed to use thug here on CP or in general conversation without the accusation of racism.

Funny you should bring that up Butch.Not too long ago I actually used the n word here,I forget the context but please grant me that it wasn't used as a label or in any way as an application to someone.

Long story short my post was edited and i received a letter informing me that no matter how pure my intentions that word could not be used.

So two weeks from now will we all be told thug is out of bounds ?

I saw this last night and wanted to comment on it, but I was tired.

There IS something called "reclaiming language," and in many ways it can be positive. Although, to be honest it often goes. . . awry.

Queer is one term that this has been done with. Taking an adjective with a negative connotation and using it so that it ends up with a positive or neutral connotation.

Bitch is another term.

The N-word COULD be one, except it has been decided that only certain people can use it with a positive connotation.

Slut. . . well. . . they have been working on that one, but they are doing it all wrong.

Now the adjective Thug.

Ya see. . . it is a negative description. Glorifying thug behavior in culture does NOT reclaim the word in a positive light. Certain activities are outside of the social contract and no matter how many times you rap/sing about it, they are just not going to fall within it.

The other part to reclaiming language is that you cannot get all upset when someone else uses the term.

If you call me a bitch, I am not going to get all upset because I refuse to see the definition of bitch as a bad thing. Even if the person calling me that sees a female being that way to be negative.
