I also disagree that it is a right in the Constitution because the Constitution is mainly about the Federal Government. Marriage contracts fall under the 10th and are reserved for the states. This is why you find the marriage stuff in state constitutions.

I am very much coming to admire Justice Kennedy... he is my kind of moderate. Below is his answer to the above and I agree wholeheartedly.

"The generations that wrote and ratified the Bill of Rights and the Fourteenth Amendment did not presume to know the extent of freedom in all of its dimensions, and so they entrusted to future generations a charter protecting the right of all persons to enjoy liberty as we learn its meaning."

This overrides all in my opinion... after all the Constitution is a living document meant to be interpreted by the Supreme Court and its meaning relevant to today.

Butch

That still assumes that marriage is a right. Like I said, I disagree with the ruling. I do not disagree with the effect of the ruling. I disagree with the means, not the end.

kdsub -> RE: SCOTUS rules gay marriage legal in all states! (6/26/2015 9:17:45 AM)

I understand your opinion however, Justice Kennedy is saying it is a basic right and therefore guaranteed under the Constitution. I find it hard to understand how some Republicans and fewer Democrats that believe in basic human rights don't agree. It seems against their tenets when it comes to governing.

I'm rather looking forward to the right wing melt down.

Oh to hell with the haters!

This victory calls for some Dancing in the Street!

keptinchains -> RE: SCOTUS rules gay marriage legal in all states! (6/26/2015 10:29:30 AM)

Way to go SCOTUS, two great decisions in two days.

And then some a-hole on Fox News questions the validity of the gay marriage decision as it is only a 5 to 4 majority. Why are the right wing such haters? Why are they so against gay marriage? How can gay marriage hurt anyone?

When will they learn to be good or at least gracious losers?

Marc2b -> RE: SCOTUS rules gay marriage legal in all states! (6/26/2015 10:39:35 AM)

Oh, I can't resist.

Ah yes... that circular hypocritical "you're a bigot too" claim.

Here's Merriam-webster on the word:
quote:

bigot
noun

: a person who strongly and unfairly dislikes other people, ideas, etc. : a bigoted person; especially : a person who hates or refuses to accept the members of a particular group (such as a racial or religious group)

Also see - http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/american-english/bigot

Notwithstanding the, way too fucking subtle for you, distinction between these two definitions and the one you selected. There is quite a difference between being intolerant of people who wish to live their lives and exercise a right and being intolerant of those people.

Let me try to explain:

I think you'll find relatively few people that are pro gay marriage who actually oppose heterosexual marriage. People that are pro gay marriage are not, generally, opposed to heterosexual marriage - These people want people to have the freedom to marry the person that they want to. Something that I would have assumed would be right up there as a "good thing" for those people who believe in freedom and liberty.

On the other hand, there is a group of people that want to deny a group access to marriage. They want to impose their narrow and discriminatory view on other people.

So you have one group that wants to prevent another from exercising a freedom, while on the other hand you've another group that simply wants every group to have that same freedom.

I know that you may need some help, and some crayons, to see the distinction.

But I always live in hope that someday you will learn to breath through your nose!

Dude you'll have an easier time convincing a wall it's made of cotton candy than you will trying to hammer some truth into this guy's head. It's just best to point out when people like him lost and enjoy the aftermath [:D]

The projection would be on the part of those who for whatever reason feel they have to label those who have gentlemanly disagreements things like "haters"

I have never shown any hate toward anyone just because they are gay or have differing views from me, thats all in your head

When you write things like

quote:

ORIGINAL: Marc2b

I'm rather looking forward to the right wing melt down.

What you are telling the world is that you thrive on division and hate

To me, that isnt an intelligent or a loving point of view, thats intolerance. Its bigotry

And that sort of attitude is what I have criticized on this thread. The only thing that I have criticized

I think that any "meltdown" as you put it, would occur on the part of the left here if anyone were to actually try to argue a dissenting view from the way you feel about it, of the actual merits of the case

Marc2b -> RE: SCOTUS rules gay marriage legal in all states! (6/26/2015 11:03:49 AM)

Denying people their civil rights is not a gentlemanly agreement. It is oppression.

Yes, I enjoy watching bullies pissed off when they don't get their way. It is they, not I who thrive on division and hate for it is they, not I who arrogantly proclaim 'you may not have what I have because you are different than me.'

Fuck those people.

There are no merits to the "case" against Gay marriage. It is nothing more than pure fucking discrimination against others for an immutable characteristic. Being a bigot however is not an immutable characteristic. But that is probably another distinction that they just don't want to see.

I'm surprised that I beat Owner59 to it.

Well'p, Ise gots taz gets back to works now. (little Western New York accent there for ya)

I hope this thread doesn't end up blocked by the time I get back.

Either way, major victory for the good guys today. Ise happy and Ise don' care who knows it.

How is it a basic right?

I agree with Aylee that it would come under the authority of the States, and not the Federal Government. To be clear, I have no problem with homosexuals having all the same options as heterosexuals. I support allowing gay marriage.

If it is a "basic human right" for a gay couple to marry, is it going to be illegal for a church to refuse to perform a gay marriage?
