A few years ago a guy set fire to seven churches in one night, 4 white , 3 black.
All the churches were of the same denomination but they said it wasn't a hate crime, apparently since he only hated Christians but it was regardless of race it was ok.

I would change that to any fire at a church.

Yes, I agree, an arsonist attacking a church may hate blacks. they may hate whites, they may hate Christians , and they may think it would make a really pretty fire. Don't FDs always investigate for possible arson? And any time it is something like a church hate crimes must always be suspected.

They were all Baptist churches in Alabama.

Not all of the churches were black, that is why they decided at first any way, that it was not a hate crime. You could still be right, the kind of people who do that sort of thing don't include a lot of Rhodes scholars.

I wouldn't immediately consider any church fire as suspicious. Unless there is a pattern evolving and a fire fits the pattern.
