so why do we hear so much about social security being broke (out of funds) and not the welfare or healthcare packages?

Now, if they paid back the funds ripped out to take care of a "temporary shortfall" in the general budget; would it be solvent again?

The Social Security Old Age & Survivor Insurance fund is separate and distinct from the Social Security Disability Insurance fund.
(Medicare is also a separate fund.)

The link says the supplemental report cannot be found.

From the link I provided:

"Most analyses of Social Security focus on the combined OASI and DI trust funds, since both programs are integral parts of Social Security, but the two trust funds are, in fact, separate. The DI trust fund faces exhaustion in 2016, and the much larger OASI fund is projected to last until 2034. Congress must therefore take action before late 2016 to replenish the DI trust fund. Increasing the share of the payroll tax that is allocated to DI (and reducing the OASI share) would assure that both the OASI and DI programs remained solvent through 2033. Congress has reallocated payroll tax revenues many times in the past, and doing so has not been controversial."

I believe the exhaustion dates of 2034 for Social Security and 2016 for Disability Insurance were reaffirmed in another report released to the media last month.

I dont remember the precise terminology but SS is a revolving pool, its not like a big bank account per se. Basically money rotates through it. Part of the reason they are so forgiving to illegals, to help pay for the baby boomers.

What has been paid into SS since the 1983 (Greenspan/Reagan) reform through a tripling of the payroll tax among other adjustments, is some $2 trillion ++ in over payment that congress has squandered. (some have estimated $3 trillion...gone !!)

If those whores weren't such pandering, easy spenders, SS would now in fact be...in surplus. Instead it carries Treasury IUO's that could never be sold or traded and thus sit there waiting for the general fund to buy them out.

Next question. Who is going to pay for buying them out ?

the whole idea of a gubmint iou on the scale of ss is fraud on its face, since they would need to get it from somewhere and somewhere is always the tax payer.

the sad part is that many immigrants migrated here to escape countries that do the same, well suprise and welcome to a bigger banana republic!

cant help but think of all these folks screaming 'by the people of the people for the people' when the truth of the matter is its by da gubmint for da gubmint of da gubmint.

'checks and balances' between the branches are one of the best illusions I have ever seen since so many fall for it hook line and sinker.

The 4th branch of gubmint 'we the people' have no say in these matters. well we get to choose our next king and his courtiers LMAO

Like I've said, no president has anymore effect on the direction of the country than a hood ornament does on the direction of the car.

Congress just fends for 'themselves.'

ANSWER: WE are...the American taxpayer and mostly, the labor force and what will be paying a second time...for the same benefit.

Oh, I am sorry...'entitlement.' [sic]

Come to think of it, we never hear about the Department of Defense being broke either. Somehow, they always seem to have money coming in from...somewhere.

DOD is boke. Yes it has operational money but that is from a different fund. They are cutting back on everything. Benefits, pay, repair of equipment (you let it break bad enough and you have to replace it), training (cost is lives), etc.

this was indeed one of the topics brought up in the "debate" the other night. its too bad everyone didn't get a chance to weigh-in. chris Christie believes in raising the retirement age, and doing means-testing.

mike Huckabee believes that social security can be wholly funded by a consumption tax.

if i am remembering rightly, rand paul, though he didn't mention it on stage---has said before he believes his tax system could eliminate the payroll taxes and still fully fund social security.

personally, i think id like to see social security phased out completely and have people be able to keep the money they earn and invest it for retirement as they see fit.

there'd have to be an awful lot of emphasis on investing and retirement education in the early high school years...and encouragement too.

and then someone would have to come up with the answer to the question, what do you do with the folks who perhaps didn't plan for their golden years.

Its simple, old people vote normally republican, Medicaid and food stamp beneficiaries vote democrat.

That is why one is always going broke and the others arent.

Dont hold your breath Lucy. It is similar to the tired claim trotted out by some Tories. It is also as untrue here as in the US.

Looking at the demographics and the parties' platforms, the claim isn't so farfetched.
