In many ways, I have to echo the experiences listed here. It does seem that society as a whole is losing its way when it comes to courtesy, kindness, politeness. In some manner, it almost reflects the progression towards more and more "casual" society, as if the effort of being polite has become greater than what many people are willing to undertake. Politeness, also, I believe has become regarded as a mask -- a form of deceit as it by being polite a person is somehow being dishonest. Add into that (again, this is my own opinion) a confusion that politeness is indicative of weakness, and a disdain for the courtesies that were commonplace becomes understandable. I do say "understandable" with thought as I do NOT think it is pardonable. I believe it was Robert A Heinlein that wrote that the first sign of a decadent nation is a loss of manners. Perhaps he spoke truly and we are experiencing it.
