Long story short, I've been asked through work to go out to Houston for a couple of years and sort out an American arm of our company.

To be frank, I don't fancy it. Financially it's very much worth it and had it been somewhere in Louisiana or Virginia or pretty much anywhere in the South of the United States I would have seriously considered it; but I have a pre-conceived idea that Texas/Houston just wouldn't be for me.

Getting to the point, am I cutting off my nose to spite my face here? Is Houston a decent place to live?

Any particular reason? I've had a look on it appears to be on the coast which is a huge attraction for me. Museums seem to be decent enough.

I used to live there. If the humidity does not bother you then it is a pretty kewel place in the sense that it is really west new orleans.

I'm fair skinned, Thompson, blue eyes etc, and so not a massive fan of hot weather. Could get on with it, though, depending upon what the place has to offer.

Well, first off, it's far too hot and humid for me.

I used to travel a lot for business. I've been to many states and as an East Coast, Jewish, outgoing redhead, I obviously stood out in certain places, mostly the Southern states.

However, it was all good until Texas. I have had multiple incidents of anti-semitism, sexism, and anti-East Coast sentiments flung my way for no reason.

Finally, I became very ill years ago on a trip and had to go to the emergency room. I was treated so obnoxiously and with such incompetence, I should have sued them. I asked for a specialist and was never taken care of correctly. I was much younger then, and did not address these issues as aggressively as I should have. If that happened now, they would have a huge problem.

It was so awful, that from that moment, I told every employer moving forward that I would take any sales territory with the sole exception of Texas.

Now, of course I am sure there are some smart, cool, open minded people in Texas, but even with business, I encountered shady people, unlike anywhere else.

Since you are not an East Coast woman, I'm sure your experience will differ.

P.S. As a cultural arts aficionado, I have not experienced what they have in that arena.

Austin is awesome,houston not so much....
El Paso was a blast when you could hop accross the border,but you couldn't pay me enough to go to juarez now

If you like drinking cold beer on a hot beach,you'll fit right in.
If you like drinking cold beer while wearing a cowboy hat,you'll akwardly fit in
If you like drinking room temperature beir while watching soccer on the telly,amazingly you'll still fit in,so long as yer a male with short hair and show no signs of being "light in the loafers".

It has a night life,nothing sofisticated(see above),but it is lively.Lots of rough necks who work hard play hard,think hard not so much.
Like any metropolice,culture can be found if you dive for it,and uf you do dive,you'll be rewarded with quiet an assortmeant.

one of the few plus things about Houston is they have a lesbian Mayor (& imo overall she did a pretty good job), unfortunately this is her last term, new Mayor will be elected in a couple of months so who the hell knows what that new Mayor will screw up..

Traffic is terrible here, even the toll roads are clogged.. and taking the bus any distance is even worse... Houston is the only city in the US that doesnt have zoning laws so the city is a mish-mash of res mixed with who knows.. and it SPRAWLS over 600 acres (I think, something crazy like that).. there are a ton of HOAs & master planned communities, many in the burbs.. and slums in parts of the city (which was made worse by the recession/depression).. There is a huge divide here, very rich in certain areas and very poor in other areas.. and the city is basically segregated that way.. the very poor mostly being black and hispanic.. about half the population here is black (which for me was culture shock)..

and its fcking HOT here.. not just for a day or two, or a week or two.. its fcking hot for months and months and months.. all I have to do is go outside for 5 minutes and I will be soaked from sweating.. er, I mean glowing...

and when its not fcking hot here its hurricane season.. This past memorial day there was a 500 year flood.. it was pretty massive in some areas and other areas barely touched.. in some areas it rained 10 inches in 6 hours..

they are so damn proud of their Memorial Park but the trees here are a joke, they are short and stunted.. real trees are lush and 200 feet high.. and how they can go jogging there in this heat just amazes me.. oh well, better them than me!

I fcking hate this place (but I hated Florida too).. why some people like it here is beyond me...

Can you take a week or two to come here to check it out for yourself before you decide? cuz that would give you a much better idea as each person has their own ideas of what a good place to live/work is.. At the very least, make a list of things that are important to you and google and see what your research turns up..

Texas can, in general, be a very 'love it or leave it' kind of place. I didn't realize how much so until years after I left it. I have met few people who lived there for any significant amount of time who didn't either have some sort of nostalgic yearning for it, or hated it with a passion and vowed never to go back.

I have the same complexion. I live in the desert of southern california 115f is not uncommon daytime temp for weeks at a time but with a relative humidity of about 10%. Houston by contrast will seldom get above 95 for a few days but 80-90% humidity is common. Since this may be a once in a lifetime trip concentrate on new orleans for your pleasure seeking both intellectual and physical. It is a target rich environment while houston is not.

I live in Austin which is about a three hour drive north west-ish (I'm dismal with map stuff) and my Owner lives in Houston. Overall I prefer Austin, I prefer a smaller city and love the vibe here.

Houston is a lot more cosmopolitan and 'hard' IMO although that could be my natural dislike for enormous downtown areas lol. There is a lot of good cultural stuff, a lot of good restaurants and within driving distance for weekends in interesting areas.

Texas overall is kind of weird, I'm speaking as one who grew up in metro Detroit and it was a bit of a culture shock to me but I'm in love with Austin and slowly coming to love the other parts as a whole. Summers have been an adjustment! I've been here since November 2008 and only this summer have I been able to step outside in jeans without becoming a sad puddle of melted Yankee.

I also get tired of the sun, way tired of the damned ever present always glaring at me SUN. Ahem yes. Houston is very humid as well. I joke that my Owner lives in a swamp.

Since it is only a couple of years, I say go for it. It could be a fantastic time for you and if it isn't, it isn't permanent.

To me, Houston is way too crowded...I loved living in Austin and would go to Houston only on rare occasions (don't anymore, the taxis are rip offs). It is like New Orleans...too humid 9 times out of 10.

I lived in San Antonio, TX and loved it. Went to Houston, to visit a friend, and the driving there scared the holy freckles off my assets.

ok, a much bigger frickin' place.. it keeps annexing other areas but there are many areas with little or no development..

and non-existant buses (or rarely on time, no show buses etc).. I liked living downtown tho, just thats where almost all the buses go and there are 3 train lines now... not much shopping there tho and nearly all the businesses shut down on the weekend.. of course a downer to downtown is seeing the long line-ups at the shelter and places that feed homeless people.. sometimes seeing them sleeping on the sidewalk.. yeah, Houston is a great place (if you stay in the rich white areas)..

I dont think the OP has kids tho so the unbalanced school system here would be of little interest to him.. the North Forest ISD was taken over by HISD cuz it was so bad.. they lost so many records that some of the grads couldnt prove they even attended school there.. they were sol.. and other schools here have had serious scandals as well...

Red is right.. a lot of slimy sleazy sidewinders here in TX, not all are businessmen either..
