With same-sex marriage declared constitutional in all 50 states, some Supreme Court justices worry that religious freedom will face unprecedented challenges in coming years.

In his dissent, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, “Today’s decision, for example, creates serious questions about religious liberty. Many good and decent people oppose same-sex marriage as a tenet of faith, and their freedom to exercise religion is — unlike the right imagined by the majority — actually spelled out in the Constitution.”

Now that is precious!

I find it disturbing that scotus is not more transparent with their language and simply tell people that everyone has a right to exercise their religion, not only gays, but christians as well as muslims jew hindus budists and 'anyone' else as long as it does not injure another.

Not too difficult of a prediction since they set themselves up for the added business.

What issue? Religious Freedom has already been established as well limited to Worship, not discrimination against others, or any of the host of unacceptable conducts current US law forbids or restricts, most in service to the several Rights guaranteed in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Polygamy has over a century of US law backing the prohibition against several religion's 'freedom' for old men in church power ('Elders') to have multiple child brides.(Which the cynical would call the triumph of one Religion's Freedom over another Religion's?) All the many punishments and practices in the Old Testament and Koran that are illegal will continue to be, such as slavery, child sacrifice, stoning heretics, adulterers, apostates, 'revisionists' and everything else horrific some nut job thinks 'God' entitles or mandates him to do to citizens, church members or family.
For 'Christians' to claim Religious Freedom to discriminate against others in the name of Jesus Christ, when His SUPREME COMMANDMENT was to treat others as we would wish to be treated, is not just disingenuous, but heresy.

Except when laws "force" us to violate our religious tenets. That's what's going on in this country, lately.

Yeah it's a crying shame that those pesky murder laws don't allow us to kill disrespectful children.

If you want to live in a theocraticy, change the constitution.

if there's a faith practice out there that wants to be able to "kill disrespectful children", I suspect you might be one of the very few who knows about it.

I know this though, believers kinda get tired of the oh no "theocracy" red herring---as if Christians are all just dying to vote in mike Huckabee/rick santorum on (old testament) biblical steroids to set up a new world order in which the state and the church are the same thing.

sorry---Christian love and "absolute tolerance" are not equivalencies, nor does the former essentially flow into the latter.

and "heresy" is not the correct word. no one in the Christian faith disbelieves or is at substantive variance with "love your neighbor as yourself" (which was not Christ's "supreme command" by the way), they rather are at odds, seemingly, with your interpretation of the admonition.

apart from that I totally distrust gawker's journalist's take on the matter, the material in the content of the link doesn't justify its title, or your premise.

crazyml -> RE: Supreme Court justices predict next battle: Religious Freedom (10/11/2015 5:44:07 AM)

Errrmm... it's in deuteronomy.

So, I would reckon that...ya know... given that all those people who have bought and read the bible over the years, quute a few people know about it.

Gosh... do you feel really fucking stupid now?

Besides. .. who else needs to hold the same belief as me for it to be valid? If I believe that in order to observe the laws of my god then I should have my son stoned to death outside the city walls, are you going to deny me that religious freedom?

Or do you only want to give religious freedom to those religious beliefs that match your own?

The 'obscure' religions that only crazyml knows about are Christianity and Judaeism.

Quite a few people allegedly follow those.[8|]

I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again:

Your religious "rights" begin - and end - between your ears.

It's really quite simple:

You want to be a religious asshole; expect there to be consequences. You do not have an unlimited religious freedom. Your religious freedom ends were others begins. Their freedom of religion ends where yours begins. That all people's freedoms are equal under the law. Therefore, the larger you make your religious freedom, the larger others are allowed to make theirs. Sooner or later (more likely sooner given the topic is religion) there will be conflict.

Its funny and sad how many of these pseudo-christians say they practice the knowledge from the Holy Bible but are completely ignorant of Luke, Chapter 6, verse 31. If its 'ok' for them to hate gay people; its 'ok' for gay people to hate them back. When the pseudo-christians complain, the gay people can just point out that they are the originators of the hate. That hate, started with their lame and immature understanding of the Bible.

Most actual Christians, do not have a problem with gay people. Subsequently, gay people do not have a problem with the actual Christians. In fact, many work together to try to help out 'at risk' groups of people: the homeless, victims of abuse, the poor, the ill, etc. Isn't that was Jesus told Christians to do? Since spewing hatred is the Devil's tool....

Except for the detail that Christianity neither enshrines nor follows the whole of Old Testament law.

If the retail bastards would stop putting out Christmas stuff before we even get to Halloween, things would be swell.
