And in the context of your comment about the additional time required to release a safety, I can tell you that there isn't any with the manual safety on a 1911. It's just a thumb-flick as your hand wraps around the grip. Maybe it is like that in the movies but that is not how a 1911 works.[8\|]

He saw an old guy and thought that in any kind of hand to hand he would have no problem. A gun changed the equation making it dangerous for him. No guts, no glory.
