ORIGINAL: LadyConstanze I studied in Oz for a while and get regular job offers from there, I found applying for my US VISA and green card was a lot more difficult. Though I can't say I ever had a desire to work in the Philippines, far less live there... I read some anedocts about the us highlghting that didn't know much about australia, well it reinforces my point. They do have a point system, one think I do approve of is that you do need to speak the language, then they look at what you can offer, though one thing that I find a bit weird is that a PhD almost immediately makes you eligible, I happen to have one but it has very little to do with what I do now. As for my US work VISA, despite being allowed to become a resident, I have no desire to do so, too much going for me at home and I don't want to sell property and all that jazz, it seemed to floor and offend them that I am quite happy to travel back and forth without the desire to become a citizen. I have dual nationality already, I just don't want to add US citizenship as it wouldn't do anything for me. And in all honesty, a country who thinks Donald might be a contender - rather not be tarred with that brush. Having US citizenship would be much more than doing nothing for you.. it would actually cost you!.. Many Americans dont know that the US is one of 2 countries in the world that tax based on both citizenship & residence.. so becoming a US citizen would mean you would be required to file a US tax return every year no matter where you lived/resided and pay tax to the US (if you earned more than about $85k), you would pay more for an accountant to file your various tax returns so every year that would cost you even if you didnt owe any taxes plus you would be turned away from some (non-US) banks that no longer accept US citizens as clients (even if you have other citizenships).. I'm aware of that, plus the problem of travelling with a passport most of the world doesn't like all that much... I simply don't want it, even if they keep reminding me that I can apply for it...
