1)Uncontrolled and massive immigration

2)An entrenched criminal underclass to flourish largely unchallenged

3)Increase the national debt.

4)Start more foreign wars, antagonize other countries until WWIII finally happens.

5)Legalize hard drugs and gambling everywhere. Let people wallow in their addictions.

6)Automate more jobs and send more jobs to China or other developing nations so that more people are unemployed.

7)Put up as many barriers as possible for folks to improve their lot. Keep the rich rich and the poor poor.

8) Promote a culture that encourages short term gratification over delayed gratification and hard work.

9)Promote a culture that encourages people to despise all authority and do whatever they want whenever they want.

10)Don't invest in infrastructure. Let America crumble.

Which candidates are guilty of some of these things? Hehehe

10)Don't invest in infrastructure. Let America crumble.

Herre is some news from yesterday regarding infrastructure and highway tax fun...

It didn’t generate a lot of attention, but the House did something entirely unexpected last week: it actually passed an important bill without a lot of drama. The nation’s Highway Trust Fund is set to run out of money on Nov. 20, pushing Congress to do something before the infrastructure deadline, and in his first tangible victory, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) advanced a six-year package, carrying a $340 billion price tag.

The final vote was surprisingly lopsided: 363 to 64. Most of the opponents were far-right lawmakers, but they didn’t come close to derailing the bill. The Ryan honeymoon is apparently real.

It’s not yet a done deal – the House bill will have to be reconciled with a related Senate bill – but given the usual crisis atmosphere on Capitol Hill when a deadline nears, it’s refreshing to see a process go relatively smoothly, at least for now.

But in an interesting twist, some Republican presidential candidates are watching these developments with a wary eye, arguing that Congress shouldn’t be investing in infrastructure much at all.
Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is backing a plan to cut the 18.4 cents per gallon gas tax, which pays for most federal transportation projects, by about 15 cents.

“We need to get the federal government out of this infrastructure business, other than vital economic highways,” the former Pennsylvania senator said [in Tuesday’s undercard debate]. “It has been said that if we cut the gas tax to three to five cents and send the rest back to the states, and just take care of the federal infrastructure that’s vital for our economy,” he continued, “we don’t need the federal government in the road business that it is today.”
A little context is probably in order. The Highway Trust Fund, which plays a central role in financing infrastructure projects, is financed through a federal gas tax that hasn’t changed in two decades. The result has been a disaster for much of the country – the resources simply don’t exist anymore to keep up with the nation’s infrastructure needs. U.S. investments have dropped to levels unseen in generations, at least in part because congressional Republicans won’t increase the gas tax.

Santorum’s idea is to decrease the gas tax to almost nothing, and dramatically curtail the federal role in infrastructure investments across the board.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking. “Sure, Santorum is saying this, but so what? The guy is at roughly 0% in the polls.” That’s true. But he’s not the only one making this argument.

The idea of a presidential candidate advocating federal disinvestment in American infrastructure may sound ridiculous and regressive – because, well, it is – but Marco Rubio’s presidential campaign also unveiled a transportation plan this week, and it’s largely identical to Santorum’s.

A Rubio administration intends to slash the federal gas tax that finances infrastructure projects by 80%, and then turn over investments “to the states.”

Santorum may not be competitive, but Rubio – the one most pundits keep saying may very well be our next president – is a top-tier contender, who’s every bit as conservative on this issue.

In the not-too-distant past, highways and prioritizing American infrastructure was entirely bipartisan. There’s nothing Democratic or Republican about roads, bridges, runways, rail, and ports. But those days are ending – and the GOP line on infrastructure is headed for the right-wing cliff.

Greta;

What destroyed the Soviet Union ? I know what most people say, but that is not the core of what did the job.

You see they did not have real money, it was scrip, and the government issued al the checks. the rubles were always counted up. but the value of the rubles was variable, pricves change etc. just like in a "capitalist" system. It is just that the rules are actually worse. but we are catching up. When a big pharma can sue a guy and prevent him from selling his own invention and sell it themselves instead, I think it is obvious where we have gone.

And where are we headed ?

What people call America is already destroyed. I enjoyed the old days. I know there was racism but I never did it. Maybe I had feelings against or toward, but I was a kid. And my Parents NEVER EVER pushed any racism on me. Being attracted to people who look similar to you is a human and animal trait. That means skin color too. It is an innate trait.

The degree to which we deal with it is the true measure of our humanity, and our claim to be human. In fact even if some of the others are not human, we should not prejudge them... until the US government says so at least.

T^T

I wonder if the extremely bad posts here by deranged US far rightwingers would make the list. I have a feeling at least one space ought to be reserved for them.

From where I sit, there's little doubt that the jingoistic nationalist/'US might is US right' gibberish pumped out by O'Reilly, Hannity Beck and the rest of the far Right commentariat, with its dumbing down of the level of political awareness and analysis, asinine foreign policy dictates and simplistic black and white 'solutions' would make any list of the prime dangers to America from within.

In response to the OP, it is arguable that many of these conditions have already been met. It is (at the very least) arguable that factors #2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 10 describe the current US reality. If the hawks win 2016, add #4 to that list. I'm not sure that the remaining factors will change things that much should they also become realised ..... So if the point made in the OP has any merit, the US has already been largely destroyed from the inside. It remains to be seen if the US is irretrievably down the tubes.

Perhaps a more pertinent question might be: 'Which if any of the 2016 candidates has the potential and the political skills to turn it around?'.

how appropriate and timely is this thread given a quote by general douglas macarthur I just read in a section of a book I was referencing this very morning---and all the more in particular to left wing nut jobs who seem to be incredibly incapable of learning from history:

"in this day of gathering storms, as moral deterioration of political power spreads its growing infection, it is essential that every spiritual force be mobilized to defend and preserve the religious base upon which this nation is founded; for it has been that base which has been the motivating impulse to our moral and national growth. history fails to record a single precedent in which nations subject to moral decay have not passed into political and economic decline. there has been either a spiritual reawakening to overcome the moral lapse, or a progressive deterioration leading to ultimate national disaster."

and viking, I cant say this for sure, but I believe the "political bigots" was aimed directly at you given your post...if not, it certainly should have been.

this is a common "go to" place for insight as to the question. some, if not all, are still applicable. there are common elements between whats below and greta's list :

Some Clues as to Why Nations Fall: "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire"
by Edward Gibbons

quote:

Gibbons listed at least eight basic reasons for the destruction of the enormous Roman Empire. There are more reasons, but the following gives a proven overview from the pages of his writings.

quote:

1. Decline in Morals and Values: Those morals and values that kept together the Roman legions and thus the empire could not be maintained towards the end of the empire. The dramatic increase of divorce undermined the institution of the family...The drive for personal pleasure had become very intense, even to the point of obsession.

2. Public Health: There were many public health and environmental problems...Those who lived on the streets in continuous contact allowed for an uninterrupted strain of disease much like the homeless in the poorer run shelters of today. Alcohol use increased as well adding to the incompetency of the general public.

3. Political Corruption: Hidden conspirators were working within the government to secretly destroy it. They worked quietly, invisibly and deceitfully; during the entire time they were secretly dismantling the government of the Roman Empire, they publicly proclaimed their unswerving support of it. People lost their faith, both religiously and in their government. The efficient Roman Government gave way to chaos and disintegration.

4. Unemployment: This not only undermined the citizen farmer who passed his values to his family, but also filled the cities with unemployed people. At one time, the emperor was importing grain to feed more than 100,000 people in Rome alone. These people were not only a burden but also had little to do but cause trouble and contribute to an ever increasing crime rate.

5. Inflation: The imposition of higher taxes undermined the economic stability and vitality of the Empire. Taxes were raised to pay for deficit government spending, to pay for food for all in society and to pay for government-sponsored activities of diversion, such as circuses and sports.

6. Urban decay: Wealthy Romans lived in a domus, or house, with marble walls, floors with intricate colored tiles, and windows made of small panes of glass. Most Romans, however, were not rich, They lived in small smelly rooms in apartment houses with six or more stories called islands. Each island covered an entire block. At one time there were 44,000 apartment houses within the city walls of Rome.

7. Inferior Technology: since the Romans relied so much on human and animal labor, they failed to invent many new machines or find new technology to produce goods more efficiently. They could not provide enough goods for their growing population. They were no longer conquering other civilizations and adapting their technology, they were actually losing territory they could not longer maintain with their legions.

8. Military Spending: Maintaining an army to defend the border of the Empire from barbarian attacks was a constant drain on the government. Military spending left few resources for other vital activities, such as providing public housing and maintaining quality roads and aqueducts...The emperors were forced to raise taxes frequently which in turn led again to increased inflation.

THE FINAL BLOWS
For years, the well-disciplined Roman army held the barbarians of Germany back. Then in the third century A. D. the Roman soldiers were pulled back from the Rhine-Danube frontier to fight civil war in Italy. This left the Roman border open to attack. Gradually Germanic hunters and herders from the north began to overtake Roman lands in Greece and Gaul (later France). Then in 476 A. D. the Germanic general Odacer or Odovacar overthrew the last of the Roman Emperors, Augustulus Romulus. From then on the western part of the Empire was ruled by Germanic chieftain. Roads and bridges were left in disrepair and fields left untilled. Pirates and bandits made travel unsafe. Cities could not be maintained without goods from the farms, trade and business began to disappear. And Rome was no more in the West.

http://www.freemaninstitute.com/RTGdecline.htm

but yeah, its fox news, religious people and heaven forbid...capitalism!

As long as every issue is polarized and along party lines nothing is going to be accomplished apart from politicians having their sound bites in their respective echo chambers.

1)Uncontrolled and massive immigration
The immigration argument is primarily about access to scarce resource, welfare, health care, etc. No America cannot be the dumping ground of all the world downtrodden. To combat the problem change the incentives. Build a more robust infrastructure and a clear global strategy for a path to come to the united states that is not arbitrary.

2)An entrenched criminal underclass to flourish largely unchallenged
Hmmm the word criminal underclass, is a misnomer, the underclass criminals do crimes relegated to their community, compared to corporate thievery that damages the infrastructure and thus the country. Conservatives use the poor and minorities like the red baiting of McCarthyism era. That Demagoguery red baiting that masked the erosion of personal liberties and freedoms, all to supposedly fight a communistic enemy. This did not address who the real enemy was, that enemy was Sen. McCarthy. He ruined so many lives, convicted people without evidence, spouting the big lies, while waving the bogeyman of communism. Likewise do the conservatives today wave a target in front of us, the poor and the have nots are coming to take your stuff, they say to the affluent. They ask and we give up our freedoms to the elites to defend us against the poor, fight the poor rising up, to fight poverty is liked to terrorism while conservatism is called patriotism, all the while corporations are raiding our treasury to fund infrastructure necessary to them while the put 10's of billions! yes billions of dollars in low tax offshore corporate tax-shelters. These corporation while claiming bereaved over taxed moral high ground is raping the country and steal more in a year than the mafia and drug lords can do in a lifetime. Take the 10 largest corp and add up their off shore liquid(cash) assets and see what you have.

3)Increase the national debt.
House hold cannot live on credit cards and the government cannot do it either. When you live on credit cards eventually you will have to start paying back the bill. You will have to budget, because you don't not have the money, which is why you used the credit card in the first place. American cannot keep running a deficit and not expect the interconnecting world economies to have an adjustment. Just to the dynamism of the systems involved. I f we could just get rid of super PAC and dark money, so we cut off the blood supply(money) to the cancer of corruption in our government

4)Start more foreign wars, antagonize other countries until WWIII finally happens.
All countries take actions to secure their interest. They fight wars or they fight proxy wars, in trade, in sports. Wars are expensive and it never a good idea to start one unnecessarily. But when your enemy is already at war, doing harm to you and your economy then fighting a war that devastate them, removing the profitability to wage economic and cultural warfare because we will respond is true peace through strength. Acquiescence or accommodation only brings escalation

5)Legalize hard drugs and gambling everywhere. Let people wallow in their addictions.
We only have to look at prohibition in the USA for our lesson. The current organized crime, went from a localized shakedown into a national organized parasitic snake, based on the ill-conceived notion that morality can be legislated in a free society. The prohibition against alcohol created a lucrative market and supplier were more than willing to provide product, in fact more alcohol was consumed during the prohibition than after the law was repealed, it was forbidden fruit anymore, so it lost its appeal. The war on drugs is a failed policy, casual marijuana users are getting sentences harsher that felony violent crimes. But number are needed so tax dollars can be channeled into their failed programs, this war on drugs, was cynically started by Nixon purely for political reasons, it has now acquired a life of its own.. People with addictive personalities are going to be addicted, we have alcoholics, but not everyone is an alcoholic. Make psychotropic drugs legal and so cheap, that drug cartels cannot compete, people are not being murdered, because there are no huge profits to me made.

6)Automate more jobs and send more jobs to China or other developing nations so that more people are unemployed.
Again look to a corrupt political system the support and create oligarchy. The conservatives in pursuing money to fund their campaigns, sell America out from underneath the Americans. They wave some yellow journalism at the masses with implied racial overtones, placate the religious segment of their constituency with promises they know will never be kept. And pass laws that allow like in russia, 1% of America to own 60% of the country. These are oligarchs who consider themselves a citizen of the world not of America, so taking jobs overseas and leaving us only service jobs is ok. Taking all the profit and not reinvesting anything back in the company, that’s ok too. Creating illegal barriers to entry and forming illegal monopolies and price fixing well that’s ok. They are the ruling class and they know what is best. We are back to a society of inherited privileges. Citibank paid off congressman to slip into a funding bill a law to allow banks to risky derivatives betting again, they take the winnings, the losses are covered by our taxes. Keep the rich richer and the poor poorer
The ruling class in Rome did this they raided the treasury to pay of debts of noble families and the emperor building country palaces and pay for the army 400K men. In the end rome saw the problem of indebtedness was so common that it was seriously hindering economic enterprise. In 118 A.D. Hadrian agreed to wipe off a bad debt to the treasury which amounted to the equivalent of £7 million and also reduced many other sums….a bailout by any other name is still a bailout. It did not save rome, because the nobility did not change, greed is an incurable disease.

There are three things you must do when you have ruling class oppress a population.
Distract them from their chains, so they don't realized they are oppressed. entertainments/TV
Show them the benefits letting themselves be oppressed someone occasionally wins the lottery, poor kid makes good in the corporate world.
condition to accept that they are powerless to change their circumstances and can never escape. poor ad the rich when judged for the same crime..who gets punished harsher

8) Promote a culture that encourages short term gratification over delayed gratification and hard work.
look at corporate culture that drive short term quarterly profit rather than long term corporate gowth benefit

9)Promote a culture that encourages people to despise all authority and do whatever they want whenever they want. yes Music

10)Don't invest in infrastructure. Let America crumble. current corporate America. The GOP leading presidential candidates are proposing defunding American infra structure and turning it over to the state. Why would some advocate crippling America, like that, because it would be a profit driver for some little local oligarc, and the politican would get to stay in power. Look at the real numbers of that policy under walker in Wisconsin. Under walker home prices went down, real wages went down, but unions got busted and corporation made windfall profit and he tried passing a law that he did not have to keep record of anything no emails nothing, he leaves wisconsin with a $2.2 billion budget deficit

History will show, we ask not to be educated,
We wanted our political process to be theater.
TV rating are more important than a substantive agenda
We are doing this to ourselves.
This is not the rantings of a liberal, I rather detest incompetency that they allowed themselves to be so dominated they cannot even defend themselves against spurious charges.
I think the less government the less opportunity for corruption.
If corruption harms me, then that corrupt person should pay the price,
no more lies
We allowed a party of elites who's main agenda to preclude
anyone joining their hallowed ranks and prevents the redistribution of wealth.
