There are many places in the usa that even citizens may not go.
Like where?

Military bases...war toy manufacturers...police departments...power plants...just to name a few

Not as many as North Korea, which is practically 90% of their country.

Their country their business

That is exactly what I am speaking of. Singaporeans have no choice about having the 40% witheld. They may not access that money.

Yes, but it's fully refundable, even if they don't see a cent of that money, their children will as inheritance, so it ain't taxes. It's forced retirement funds.

Is that the texas two step of the cotton eye joe?

You belong to the older generation who have benefited from social security.

Social security started way before I was born. I have only been in the rocking chair for 6 years.

But the ruling party simply wanted to implemented it's plans undisrupted, so fast progress happens. We couldn't have achieve all the things the tiny country achieved in a mere 50 years, from a swamp land of poverty and no natural resources and racial tension and riots, to the harmony, low jobless rate, low crime and low poverty rate, IF we had two parties constantly bickering and blocking each other from getting anything done. Singapore is an example of what happens if the dictator wasn't all about himself and actually plans and visions that will genuinely benefit majority of his people.

This argument is not convincing. At the end of WWII, Japan and Singapore were in roughly comparable states. Since then both have made tremendous strides towards prosperity and are now among the world's most affluent societies.

Japan has managed to achieve everything that Singapore has achieved, and some would say, more than a little more on top too. Japan has achieved all this while having a stable two party democratic system. So the argument that Lee Kuan Yew's 'benevolent dictatorship' was necessary, or that it was necessary to by-pass democracy for Singapore to achieve progress doesn't seem to withstand scrutiny.

A more reasonable explanation for this myth circulating is that it rationalised (and seeks to justify/excuse) Lee Kuan Yew's authoritarian rule, his corruption of the democratic process and other excesses.

Fear.

That is what separates the average Trump supporter from the rest of us. Religious fanatics chopping off heads and mass raping women in the middle east, Muslim refugees pouring into Europe and possibly coming here to America, mass shootings in Paris and San Bernardino . . . They see these things on the news and they are afraid. In their fear they abandon rationality (presuming they had any in the first place) and seek out the strong daddy figure to protect them. Trump knows this. He focuses their fear. It is them, the different ones, he informs them, conveniently helping them forget the mass shooting epidemic in America is being mostly carried out by NON-Muslims.

I do not damn them for their fear. Fear is normal. Fear is natural. I have my own fears. We all do. I do damn (or at least, harshly criticize) them for giving into their fear.

Strangely, I do not fear being involved in a mass shooting, such a thing is largely unpredictable so I just go about my daily life. I do fear for the future of this country - and the world - should "President Trump" ever come to pass. I am still hopeful that the majority of Americans will keep their wits about them and turn away from the dark path Trump (and any of the Republicans) would lead us down.

If that unfortunate situation should emerge I will be tempted to drive north and shack up with Lucylastic . . . but . . . no . . . as delightful as that would no doubt be, that would be giving in to fear.

Roosevelt was right.

No. I'm saying that only a frightened man would want to bolt the country. A frightened man with good taste and a sense of adventure would want to shack up with Lucy.

Comparing Japan to Singapore is a joke, since Japanese has way more natural resources and land than we do. Do you realise, I can skate the circumference of my country in 14 hours? And that's about 140km. Top skating athletes in the US can finish 100km in 3 hours, so they can skate the circumference of Singapore in 4 hours. That's how little land we have. We don't even have space to grow our own food. We are completely at the mercies of importing water and food from other countries. Japan is self-sufficient. Japan has manufacturing space. We barely have space for manufacturing. They have farming. We can't even farm anything. When we had our independence from Malaysia, the whole world thought we were gonna die. No more support from Britain as well. To try to compare us with Japan is ridiculous.
We try to have the best airport, the best shipping port, the best education system so other asian countries will send their children here, and we try to have the best safety, cleanliness, for foreign businesses to set up in our country. But we constantly face competition from lower wages neighbouring developing countries rich in land and natural resource and trying to outdo us!

To trivialize and say we are just like Japan is absolutely just crazy.

I wasn't saying Japan and Singapore were the same. I was referring to the fact that at the end of WWII both were in a pretty poor state. Since then both countries have made a lot of 'progress'.

Singapore went the route of Lee Kuan Yew's 'benevolent dictatorship' while Japan went a more democratic route to achieve that progress. BTW, Japan has no natural resources either, and over 80% of its land mass is uninhabitable. So comparing the two in this particular way is not unreasonable. Obviously there are many many points of difference too.

But your suggestion that Lee Kuan Yew's 'benevolent dictatorship' was necessary, and that it was necessary to suppress democracy to achieve the progress Singapore has achieved is not supported by the facts.

Japanese people were more educated and advance than us, even during world war 2. While Japan was busy attacking the rest of Asia, they still believed in education, people within Japan were not backwards uneducated folks at all. I mean they invaded Singapore and instilled Japanese education to Singaporeans. They always cared about education.
To say we started at the same level is totally not the same.

Singapore had serious uneducated issues. I don't think the British people when they were here put alot of focus on educating the locals at all. Lots of language barriers too. Before English was made compulsory first language, everybody just spoke their own languages and communication was a problem with no common language to bond them together. Infact, I felt like the British occupancy had like no plan for progress in our country at all and wanted to keep the locals uneducated and backwards to their benefit. English being the bridging language was one of LKY great ideas by the way!

There were alot of racial riots and tensions, probably also due to language barriers.

Japan really didn't have half of the problems we have. They were one united country. We were one big mess, racially, internally, we were fighting against each other constantly.

And whole land devastated but as far as I know, Japanese has alot of agriculture as they rebuilt! And we pay stupid amounts of money for even their melons. One Japanese melon cost like $100. Kobe Beef, highly sort after. And Japanese rice! Always fantastic! And we can't sustain our agriculture because we have no land.

Land is a HUGE natural resource by itself. They definitely had it better than us in many areas.

Our dictatorship was necessary because you are dealing with uneducated people who are not educated enough to make educated decisions. It was as simple as that. Countries like Philippines and Indonesia and even Malaysia lack progress as fast as us, despite being around longer than us, because they have democracy and not enough educated voting.

My Filipino friend tells me in an Filipino election, it's not uncommon for politicians to visit villages and just throw money in the air, to win their votes, and that's legal. Guess who uneducated people are gonna vote for?

And LKY did win an election after all by merit. He started out as a minor opposition. It was after his win, he went all Nazi on all oppositions to ensure he stays. But I am glad he did, as Singapore when he first took office, to now, more good than bad has happened. That's all I can say. And the man is so bloody humble that, Singaporeans are protesting about his home being torn down for other development, we want it preserve for historical value, but he insist no special treatment to be given to his home, just tear it down, if needed to rebuilt a taller building in that area. And anybody who visited the home of this man is shock at how spartan he lives and how old and crumbly everything in his home was. He has all the riches but, lives like a pauper. All he cared about was devoting his life to our country and improving it.

The germans at the time likely said the exact same thing about Hitler. I find it fairly important to note that there is likely something very wrong about Trump if a facist thinks he'll make a great leader. Remember, the USA champions democracy, which is the direct opposite of facism, and yet someone who quite obviously believes in facism thinks that Trump will be a good leader. Yeah, lets just let that sink in for a moment...

I'm not sure I agree. The fact is, democracy is a slow process, and can become extremely corrupt, broken even, accomplishing nothing of relevance for years. Totalitarian governments move more quickly to act, either for the greater good of their people or for the good of the state itself, or just whatever clusterfuck idea they want to pursue.

Democracy and our system of checks and balances may keep us safe from a truly evil government, but it doesn't get things done in a timely manner.

I believe in whatever works in the best interest of the country.

The dangers of dictatorship is IF you get a bad dictator. We were lucky and we had a good one. The beauty about LKY is that, after he felt the country was educated enough, he let loose alot of things and I would say there is a huge possibility of his party losing majority vote through democracy IF they don't keep up his good work. He gifted us with democracy at the end of it, for us to make our choice. His always said governing has to evolve with the people, as they evolve. He was never rigid, his always fluid and flexible with the main goal of what is best for the country. His always been very pragmatic and systematic in how he executes things with an end goal of a prosperous and functioning country with people being able to rise base on individual merit, and not race, religion or colour.

I mean, our election was so responsive. In the previous election, before this recent one, our majority party lost a few more seats, people said they were not happy, and threatens to make them lose more seats if changes aren't made. They listened and made all the changes we wanted. They reacted to what we wanted as a whole nation. Things got done. Things got implemented. This year's election, they had a really good resounding win, as our approval that they have delivered their promises. But as with moving forward, we will use our vote to make our government work for us. This doesn't seem to be happening in the US. All I see is the inability for either party to execute anything even if that's what they said they would, because of all the red tape that makes it so impossible for them to even do good and improve the country. I actually see Trump possibly being the only person who can get things done. I think with everybody else, it's just typical empty promises.

The dangers of democracy is politicians pandering to the masses, rather than actually making difficult and far sighted good decisions. And you get things like celebrities getting elected because they are popular in the media. Democracy ain't that great either.

Hey you believe what you want, I honestly don't care. Justify whatever horrors you want, it's really no different from the Nazis. I just think people in the US, who are the supposed "leaders" of the FREE world, should pay attention to the kind of politicians that appeals to facists such as yourself and consider if they want a facist appealing president in charge of their country
