http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/13/world/europe/climate-change-accord-paris.html

LE BOURGET, France — Representatives of 195 countries reached a landmark climate accord on Saturday that will, for the first time, commit nearly every country to lowering planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions to help stave off the most drastic effects of climate change.

Delegates who have been negotiating intensely in this Paris suburb for two weeks gathered for the final plenary session, where suddenly, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius of France asked for opposition to the deal and, hearing none, gaveled the session closed.

With that, the delegates achieved what had been unreachable for two decades: a consensus on the need to move away from carbon-based fuels and a plan for the 195 nations to do so.

Though the final deal did not achieve all that environmentalists, scientists and some countries had hoped for, it set the table for further efforts to slow down the slide toward an unlivable planet.

It's been on the news constantly for days and days.
All the reports from those commentating at the site are saying anything tough has been watered down a great deal to make it palatable.
Anything of any real consequence has been buried and is virtually insignificant.

To be honest, I really don't see anything much coming from this except rhetoric from every quarter.
Another Kyoto but with more countries.

A very expensive waste of time IMHO.

It's all well and good that they came to an accord. It means nothing in the US, until it's ratified by Congress. I'm going to go ahead and guess that it's not going very far in Congress.

I'll reserve comment on the actual accord to a later time, once the details are made known (and I have time to go over them).

I just have to wonder how much carbon was released into the atmosphere because of this meeting. The irony of all the green conferences is how "un-green" they are because of all the travel-related carbon.

It has to turn into more of a videoconference type thing. Significantly less carbon output due to the significantly reduced transportation.

and that's really all that should have to be said...unfortunate that it wont be.

yeahyou jumped in...
btw, all those deniers have ever come up with is doubt, not proof.

“We were active in discussions about whether the Kyoto Protocol was an appropriate policy response,” Cohen said. “Our position, [which] continues to this day, [was] that an approach that would exclude the majority of the world’s emitters was not going to be an effective policy response to a global risk.”
Exxon began informing investors about climate risks in 2007 in regulatory filings and corporate citizenship reports. The company also began including a price on carbon in its internal business planning in 2007, which has ranged from $60 to $80 per ton, according to Yale Environment 360.
Exxon told Congress the same year that it had stopped funding climate change deniers, such as Wei-Hock “Willie” Soon, an astrophysicist with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. But records obtained by the Climate Investigations Center show that Soon received funding from the company until 2010 (ClimateWire, March 23).
Cohen drew a distinction between the company’s policy stance and its research into climate science. The company’s scientists have published numerous studies since the 1970s and have collaborated with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since its inception, he said.
Schneiderman has reportedly been investigating Exxon for a year. His office is also investigating Peabody Energy, a large coal company, according to news reports. Beginning in September,InsideClimate News and the Los Angeles Times have published a series of articles finding that Exxon has a long history of climate research, which contradicts its stance on climate policy (ClimateWire, Oct. 28).
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/exxonmobil-denies-lying-about-global-warming/

then theres this...
It’s a Through-The-Looking-Glass world. The Washington Post reports Sunday that ExxonMobil has a far saner view of global warming than the national Republican party.
Fred Hiatt, the paper’s centrist editorial page editor, drops this bombshell:
With no government action, Exxon experts told us during a visit to The Post last week, average temperatures are likely to rise by a catastrophic (my word, not theirs) 5 degrees Celsius, with rises of 6, 7 or even more quite possible.
This is indeed basic climate science.
Of course, thanks to excellent reporting by InsideClimate News, we now know ExxonMobil had been told by its own scientists in the 1970s and 1980s that climate change was human-caused and would reach catastrophic levels without reductions in carbon emissions. Yes, this is same ExxonMobil that then became the largest funder of disinformation on climate science and attacks on climate scientists until they were surpassed by the Koch Brothers in recent years — but that is a different (tragic) story.
Hiatt’s point is to show “how dangerously extreme the Republican Party has become on climate change,” and that that “Republicans’ ideologically based denial is dangerous and cowardly.” After all, the oil giant ain’t Greenpeace.

FR~

Just like Kyoto, whatever agreement they come up with in principal, if the necessary governments don't approve of whatever measures they need to make to live up to what they signed up for, nothing is going to happen in practical terms.

If China and India want to make an impact with their clamberings for investment and infrastructure, they aren't going to want to ditch fossil fuels.
The same with the US; if congress don't approve what it takes to cut fossil fuel usage, nothing is going to happen in the US either.
And until renewables are economically viable and affordable, no country is going to have those as their main source of providing power to the people.

All these arguments over who is going to pay for what to achieve these idealistic goals is somewhat moot.
It's a simple case of pie-in-the-sky ideas with no practical or affordable way to achieve them.
Until this mudball comes to the very brink of being unlivable, there will only ever be token gestures.
Some people think we've reached that point already; but many think otherwise.
When every major town and city is like Beijing on a bad day and when the worlds crops are failing and the seas are completely unsustainable as a food source, that's when things might start to get done in ernest.
Until we reach that point, everyone will do as the US does for most things - kick the can down the road to consider at a much later point in time.
By then of course, it'll be too late to salvage this planet and everyone who lives on it.
One way trip to Mars, anyone???

Let me know when China and India start to reduce their emissions. This whole thing is a farce. The Republicans in charge will give no money as they should not.

The only farce is the dumbest of dumbasses regurgitating the myths of the cold war.

Not so much ignorance and fear, Lucy; more like apathy to actually do anything really constructive.

sorry dood, ignorance and fear.
apathy is one thing, blaming it on india and china not doing anything when its not true, is ignorance.
America has been kicking this plan and others like it for decades and decades.
How long ago was Kyoto?
And with a congress full of dipshits who deny anything is wrong, they will bust this up, not out of apathy, but because..... OBAMA fear and ignorance.
I wonder what other country or countries will NOT sign onto this.

This agreement is worthless. There are no sanctions for countries that fail to abide by this.

There are no sanctions for any country. I guess the other 190 countries didn't want them either or they would have been included.
