ORIGINAL: thompsonx The average monthly salary in that third world shithole is s$3000...how does one buy a $100,000 car, the coe and afford fuel? By spending 50% to 60% of our salary on car, and taking up a 10 year car loan. Many people do it by choice. 1 Million cars is alot of cars. 1/5 people own cars, and you don't think that's alot? May I remind you again, we are only 45km x 28km. I skate the circumference of my country in 14 hours, and that's with all my meal breaks included. That's how tiny it is. 1 million cars is crazy Especially when on foot, I can walk the 28km in less than 5 hours. And that's it, walking from north to south of my country on foot only takes me 5 hours. I think your stats for LA is misleading, first of all, I'd like to know how many cars do each home actually own? And they probably only drive out one each day. Cars in US is so cheap, households can easily own multiple cars but not drive them all everyday. I can buy 5 cars in US, with 1 car in Singapore. Also, I need to know how the car registration that it's located in LA works? I mean in Singapore, it's just Singapore. But LA borders other states. Are those cars actually inside LA? Are simply purchased from LA? How do we know it's used inside LA and not outside of LA? Are those cars exclusively not allowed to leave LA? Comparing a state where people probably work outside of their state daily, to a Country where people are only confine to inside Singapore is not a fair comparison. The reason why you can handle so many cars is I suspect, most of these cars travel outside of LA zone and multiple car ownership plays a part too. Vehicle Licensing Statistics 2013 [PDF]: At the end of 2013 there were 35.0 million vehicles licensed for use on the roads in Great Britain, of which 29.1 million were cars. Our population is around 65 million. And like Singapore, it's an island nation. Almost 45% of us own cars (53.8% if you count all vehicles) compared to only 20% in Singapore. Comparison to a US state doesn't apply, so our demographics are similar - just a bit bigger. Average monthly earnings in Singapore is SG$3770 ($2660). UK average monthly earnings are £2208 ($3293). So... we earn approx 24% more than those in Singapore yet we own more than twice the number of cars. The average car loan is only over 3-5 years in the UK, not 10 years as in Singapore. According to this site (Global Petrol Prices), as of 15th December 2015, you pay 20cents a litre less than we do in the UK. Is that a fair comparison for you Greta??
