SF is being sued to change it's bail system. What do you think of our current bail system?

I don't have a real opinion one way or the other. I can't think of a better system, but at the same time I can see some issues being brought up as being unfair.

If you are poor (& not white), it sucks big time.. people can be thrown in jail for quite minor offenses, and if they dont have the money to get bailed out they can lose EVERYTHING.. their job.. their home.. their kids and family.. is it any wonder that some become so depressed that they commit suicide in jail?

You can think of a better system? really??? how about not having to come up with bail? it costs taxpayers lotsa money to keep them there too, ya know..

Just let everyone go and trust them to show up for trial????????

Do you understand what bail is for?

so to you it makes sense to pay to put people (with minor offenses) in jail cuz they are poor and cant come up with the bail? You do realize that a homeless person costs taxpayers about $40,000/year and a big part of that cost is for throwing them in jail and keeping them there.. and after keeping someone who did have a job and home in jail long enough for them to lose their job, their home & kids they will then be homeless and in an even deeper hole.. but hey, since they are now homeless just throw them in jail again, huh???

"with the average cost of a prison bed at about $20,000 per year."

Do you realize that the bail system provides for those cases. People can,and often are released without bail when minor offenses are concerned.
However, if they are considered a flight risk, or a danger to the community bail comes into play.
Homeless people are not a flight risk. Minor offenses do not constitute a threat to the community.
Cops used to pick up homeless people on cold nights so they would have a warm place to sleep and at least one decent meal, then drop charges.
But bleeding hearts put an end tothat calling it harrassment.

Nothing more than histrionics. There's quite a difference between not keeping someone in jail for a minor offense because they can't post bail, and getting rid of the bail system altogether.

Since you didn't answer the question, I'll ask again: do you understand what bail is for?

Who said getting rid of the bail system completely?

Btw do you understand why bail doesn't work for minor offences and is actually pretty counter productive? Apparently not.

Btw what's it with the pissed off looking avatar? Why and where did you download the pic? I mean it's quite funny in a sad way but it makes it kinda hard to take you seriously, especially giving the content of your postings, one might actually think you are the sad dude in the avatar

it seems like bail should be based upon the income of the offender.
and there should be sime limits for holding someone without trial

"hearsay" is things heard in rumors or gossip, not when one friend tells another of his actual experiences. otherwise, your entire life is reduced, in your words to "moronic acceptance" of what your friends and co-workers tell you, or alternatively, rejection of it since you didn't see it yourself.

your inability to be rational is astounding and only trumped by, not to mention the strong possibility of it being affected by too, your perverted malevolence.

So in your opinion if your best friend told you something it would be acceptable in a court of law?

Sticks and stones again with no contribution to the discussion at hand. which is "bail" the why and wherefore. Some moron tells you that his employer arrests people so they can have a free meal and a warm place to sleep at taxpayers expense and you want to believe it uncritically.

Not to disrupt the discussion, but merely for purposes of clarification:

hear·say
ˈhirˌsā/
noun
1. information received from other people that one cannot adequately substantiate; rumor.
2. (LAW)
the report of another person's words by a witness, usually disallowed as evidence in a court of law.
