K has some really cool tattoos. I've never had one, never really wanted one. That whole idea of having numerous needles repeatedly shoving foreign fluids into my flesh was always a turnoff. Seeing her pretty tattoos, I now covet one for myself :( but, when I look at available art - I can't find anything that I'd want to live with for the rest of my life

Also, apparently tattoo artist don't come equipped with laughing gas, or any anesthetics to knock one out. Bad call, that. Surely there would be more people getting them, if one could simply go to sleep and wake up with lovely artwork on their skin! I'd be in for that!

I'm pretty sure I'd go in for something like a dolphin, and come out with only a phin. And maybe an assault charge. That doesn't stop me from coveting K's pretties, or glancing through tattoo art online.

Everyone I've talked to who have tattoos, always have numerous ones - to the point I suspect they spike the ink with opium or heroine or something because tattoos seem to be an addiction. Maybe just touching them, can cause cravings: which would explain my sudden desire to have something I've never wanted. That addictive substance is oozing out of the tattoo and infecting me! I swear that has to be it!

So, I'm sitting here contemplating it all and wondering; yes? no? if yes, then what? I'm guessing something really small... Like a period (.) I could make up some profound reason for having just a period on my skin, post it on Facebook and start the next big "THING" even go viral. Yeah. Maybe I'll do that.

So, since there isn't' really a question, and this is more appropriately a journal entry than a topic, I guess I'll ask a question.

Tattoos - addicting?
Tattoos - spelled correctly? I keep thinking I'm spelling it wrong.
Anyone have advice about getting a tattoo?
Anyone know an artist who does house calls and carries their own laughing gas with them? I figure it can't hurt to ask.

I've been contemplating this one...much smaller, on my wrist...but I'm like you...I'm afraid we'd get the first word and I'd be done.

I think people to get addicted to tattoos. It produces endorphins and we all know how fun those can be.

You can buy tubes of anaesthetic cream off ebay etc these days and just numb the area beforehand. I was pretty close to getting Jim Carrey's tattoo from The Number 23 when I was around 24-27ish... I was like super, super! close. But I'm pretty glad I didn't now.

That is a great tattoo! I love it, and on a positive note: if you end up with only one word - Live or LIFE aren't really all that bad to have as a single word on your flesh :)

Me, I'd probably end up with "L"

As for the endorphin thing. I think that explains a great deal. It might not be so bad after all! I do miss my endorphin space.

No decent tattoo artist will work on you if you use such a creme.

I have one, but I don't have any desire for another. I enjoyed the experience, and I love my tattoo, but I'm totally satisfied with just that. My husband has several and admits that he craves the feeling.

I can't give much advice about choosing a design. I decided to get a tattoo, picked a design, and was under the needle all within an hour. My tattoo is an original drawing by the tattooist, and it instantly clicked with me when I saw it. Done and done. You can always make a consultation appointment with an artist to look at their personal work and brainstorm ideas. They will likely charge a fee for any sketching they do.

I've heard of several shops offering either a numbing lotion or some sort of patch that's applied beforehand to help with pain. Location is also a huge factor. Soft, muscly areas aren't nearly as painful as boney or fleshy areas.

Because it affects the texture of the skin and can cause inconsistencies with how well/if the ink takes. I've seen some horror show results from people who have used EMLA or some other topical before getting ink.

Hmmm, don't want to risk that. These creams weren't really around when I got mine, but I did use it to give myself some stiches lol. It stops the pain pretty well. Not worth risking a bad tat though.

self stitching? yikes! I woke the dead with my screams when I had to use super-glue to close a wound. It burned like a (insert expletive here).

Major kudos for having the fortitude to stitch yourself up :)

If you look very carefully at my avatar, you will see that I have a tattoo on my left breast. They are three little hearts. One pink, one purple, and one turquoise. I got it back around 2003 and it's the only one that I have.

I am a complete wuss about physical pain. I seriously thought I would come out of the place with a dot or a squiggly line because I couldn't hack it. Most of the places that I thought would be great to have body art weren't exactly great ideas on a pain level. It's just like topping. If you want the pain to be less, avoid areas that aren't fleshy. The closer to bone from the skin, the more it's going to hurt, so that includes places like the small of the back, the ankle, and the wrist. Thighs, buttocks, and breasts are the easy targets.

I happen to believe that all body mods can be addicting. That endorphin rush has the potential to do that and we kinky people know this. (Wait, I'm not exactly talking you out of it, am I?)

The only advice that I have is to get something that you know means something to you that you know you want with you all of your life. I know people who have opted for laser removal rather than a cover up and that is very expensive. Even then, your skin doesn't exactly go back to "original". Once you damage skin on a cellular level (which like it or not is what tattoos and scarifications are) it's still with you.

I'm totally not the tattoo type.

Just not my thing. And I can't think of a design I'd want to live with for life. (I did toy with a list of words I have trouble spelling.)

But in preparation for radiation, I had two or three dots inked onto my butt to help the team target the ray gun. Thereafter, I enjoyed startling people by referring to "my tattoos."

Alas, I doubt that bit of flesh survived the megasurgeries that followed.

But still, it was fun while it lasted.

I had cervical/uterine cancer due to DES exposure. So, when I had radiation therapy, they tattooed an X on my pubic mound. And of course, because of the radiation, lost all of my pubic hair, so the tattoo was very obvious when I was naked.

My ex-bf used to joke about treasure maps and X marks the spot!

Thanks, I had the cream though... but even so, it was a bit exhausting. I haven't tried super glue, but I've used some kind of vetenary quickclot before and that was a pretty stingy. =x What made you want to superglue it? I've heard it works ok in a pinch.

It was a moving day, I had too much to do to be bothered going to get it stitched up. It was just the fleshy part of the hand between the thumb and finger. A glass broke and sliced it open. Was deep but otherwise no big deal. All I had was packing tape and a junk drawer with super glue. Yeah I know. But I did mention it was moving day and it is damn hard to keep people motivated when you are moving out from the top of a hill down three flights of stairs.

ETA just an after thought, I've had stitches twice on my left hand that left scars. The superglued right hand doesn't really even have but a very faint line that doesn't even look like a scar.
