While the blizzard is raging in Washington, DC, the soldiers who guard the tomb of the unknown soldier are still on duty.

We lost power for a few hours today, but it's back on. I've been drawing. Not a bad way to spend a weekend. Outside, everything is iced over. Very pretty, from the other side of the glass.

I was reading an article yesterday about how dangerous it can be to shovel snow. Seriously: it causes heart attacks in large numbers.

Here's one: http://health.clevelandclinic.org/2015/02/snow-shoveling-a-real-risk-for-heart-attack/

Excerpt:

"Doctors advise against shoveling if you are older, have heart disease or think you might. “Shoveling snow is hard work,” says Cleveland Clinic cardiovascular surgeon A. Marc Gillinov, MD, co-author of the hit book Heart 411. “People who have coronary artery disease should not perform strenuous shoveling of snow. It can trigger a heart attack.”

The cold temperatures also increase the risk for heart attack because the arteries constrict and this increases blood pressure."

... Shovelling snow is unusually hard work, especially on the upper body, for people who are generally sedentary. To be done only with a lot of caution.

From the Washington Post:

"D.C. Mayor Muriel E Bowser said 'There are too many people on the streets, both driving and walking. We need you to stay home.'"

From me:

Well, if you insist.

Peon: I decided years ago the only way to shovel snow is to do it every four inches. Then the shovel isn't overloaded and it's not nearly so strenuous. Wait until you have two feet and you'll try to lift more than a safe amount.

The step daughter is west of Philly and she has two feet already and could get as much more before it's all done. Although she's got a preteen athletic son, she's not letting the kids out till the wind dies down and the temps moderate. I still think she ought to hand him the shovel and say it's all his. And pay him a decent wage when it's done.

If he has any sense he could hit the neighbors up also. I'm sure Monday will be a snow day, and maybe even Tuesday.

A wonderful perspective on the snow.

In the winter of 1985 my hometown, Buffalo, was engulfed in a blizzard — not
an uncommon occurrence for the region, which is justly famed for epic snows.
But this was a big one, and the city’s blustery Irish-American mayor, Jimmy
Griffin, was at pains to persuade people to stop trying to go about their
business as conditions deteriorated. He urged Buffalonians to “relax, stay
inside and grab a six-pack,” which must be the best advice any elected official
ever gave the public in an emergency situation.

* * *

Unless you’re a plow driver or a parka-clad elected official trying to look essential,
one doesn’t pretend to do battle against
a blizzard. You submit. Surrender.
Hunker down. A snowstorm rewards
indolence and punishes the go-getters, which is only one of the many reasons
it’s the best natural disaster there is.

* * *

And, gloriously if briefly, it hides everything else — the plastic grocery
bags and mini-marts and dog poop and salt-grimed Toyotas and sundry
disorder of modernity. Watching the quotidian American crudscape transform
into a fairytale kingdom is a legitimate wonder. Name another disaster that
leaves the afflicted region
more attractive in its wake.

We really didn't get any of it, just a dusting that's already gone, but this is Alabama and if you so much as as whisper 'winter storm' they go apeshit. I think they got a little more in N AL but here in central AL Thursday afternoon places were already announcing closures for Friday. All the schools closed early on Friday.

Official numbers are 30 inches, so it could be just drifting... still a record snow storm.

Yeah I think we got about 30" of snow here in Baltimore. Our Maryland governor just announced he's asking for federal disaster aid from the blizzard. Thankfully we haven't had any issues at our house. Master has been keeping up with the shoveling and we'll probably go for a walk later to see how the neighborhood is faring as we all try to dig out.

30" isn't bad enough that you need to shovel the roof off. That's my definition of a bad storm because you have to shovel three times. First your normal clean up, then shovel the roof snow onto the newly cleaned surfaces and then you need to shovel all around the house. Shoveling out the basement windows before the weight of the snow make them implode is always my least favorite thing. Because I would need to shovel a path to the damned windows.

If it's getting hard to open and close the exterior doors, that's when you need to shovel the roof.

Just outside of BWI area, about 30 inches here as well, spent the last day and a half feeding a baby deer, it's been all alone, usually there are 4-5 running together out back, we feed them deer corn from the farmers co-op, but this little guys all alone now, sleeping in the bushes right off the driveway. Not sure how to add a picture here, I tried searching how to but didn't get anything useful, I did get some cute pics and videos though. Suns shining bright and the cardinals are feasting on the corn, it is beautiful out for all the trouble it's going to be digging out.

I'm in the city and the snow is hip deep.
Just shoveled the car out. Maybe time to have some four wheel drive fun!
